4.0 out of 5 stars Too Bad Hart Couldn't Resist...., January 13, 2006
letting his own political bias show through at the end. This is a well written, concise, very readable biography of the first "national security" president. Monroe is one of the most underrated and under appreciated presidents in our nation's history. Hart's book should help assuage that injustice. I have only two criticisms. Hart seemed to take the easy way out by utilizing previous research rather than conducting his own in the use of innumerable quotes from other biographers/historians. This in no way detracted from the book. It just seems to say, "Why do my own research when I can use what others have done before me?" My second criticism is that Hart injected a totally superfluous and politically biased conclusion to his discussion of the Monroe Doctrine by slamming the Bush administration and attempting to advance his own political agenda. Viewing Hart as a politician, I respect his right to do that. Viewing Hart as a biographer/historian, I lament the fact that he felt compelled to prostitute his otherwise commendable book for the sake of partisan politics.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is worthwhile., November 16, 2005
This review is from: Thomas Jefferson (Hardcover)
As a part of my review I can't help but be amused at one who would claim this book "never should have been published" and "bad writing, I think, always reveals the shallowness of perception." Talk about the shallowness of perception... it sounds as though the reviewer is a frustrated and unpublished writer. To the point, just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so too is the value of this book to the reader. If you are a Jeffersonian scholar, well versed in his life and times, this book will have little to offer you. If, on the other hand, your knowledge of Thomas Jefferson stems from American History class and fanciful movies, then it has something to offer. I don't know the author, but I doubt that he intended it to be the definitive biography of Thomas Jefferson. Rather, it is a concise, well written and easily read synopsis of Jefferson's life and worth the time it takes to read it. For those who want more in depth analysis there are other excellent books to fill that need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pardon My French, April 23, 2004
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ce Sera Nous (DVD)
Patricia Kaas is arguably one of the best singers on the planet today. For some reason her U.S. audience has not embraced her to the same extent as her European audience. Perhaps it is because most of her songs are in French. You don't have to understand a word of French to be captivated by this DVD. In addition to a great voice, she is one of the most beautiful, sensual and provocative performers to grace the stage today. Add some truly talented, first rate musicians to accompany her; throw in some great camera work; include the fantastic audio and video technical production; and you have all the ingredients for a great DVD viewing experience. It's a buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of Rod and a good one at that....., March 12, 2003
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a different Rod Stewart and I bought the dvd with some trepidation. I am a big fan of Rod Stewart and also a big fan of the old standards. I just wasn't sure these two worlds would mesh. Not to fear. Rod is no threat to Tony Bennett in this genre, but he does a great job on the excellent selection of old standards. And as a bonus, you get some old Rod like Maggie May, Young Turks, Hot Legs and Downtown Train. This is definitely a buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The hottest female jazz performer on the scene today., March 12, 2003

This review is from: Diana Krall - Live in Paris (DVD)
If you are a jazz fan, you will love this. If you are not a jazz fan, you will love this. Diana Krall is the premier female jazz performer on the scene today. Not only is she a great jazz pianist, this girl can flat sing. No, she is no Ella, but who is. The audio and video qualities of this dvd are superb as are her supporting cast, in particular: John Clayton, bass; Jeff Hamilton, drums and Anthony Wilson, guitar. This is a dvd you can put on for relaxing background music or you can turn it up a couple notches and make it the focus of attention. This is one of the top favorites in my dvd collection. You go girl.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best is yet to come, March 6, 2003
This young lady is blessed with raw talent and I can't wait to see her evolve (mature) into a refined and polished performer. The sound, video and production of the dvd is first rate and Norah performs in a laid back, confident style. She is very comfortable with her audience and they connect. The only thing missing in her performance is the depth and soul that comes only with some life experiences that she is far too young to have yet acquired. I'm perfectly willing to let her enjoy her youth, but the best is yet to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would give it six stars if I could, March 3, 2003
Try as I may to be original I find myself wanting to repeat all the same things that have already been said in other five star reviews. I won't waste your time doing that except to say they got it right. This is my absolute favorite and most watched dvd of a rather extensive collection. In the last week alone, four different guests have bought this dvd the day after watching it in my home the previous evening. Roy Orbison is timeless and so is this dvd. This is a must own dvd if ever there was one. It even made me appreciate Bruce Springsteen as a musician (no small accomplishment).

This review is from: Barry Manilow: Manilow Live! (DVD)
Barry is one of the most gifted song writers and consumate performers to ever take the stage. This is a wonderfully produced dvd and has most of his greatest hits. Watch him work the audience with "Can't Smile Without You" and tell me you didn't smile throughout with his guest from the audience. For Manilow fans this is a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars ELO lives..............., March 3, 2003
I was an ELO fan from day one... always have been, always will be. OK... so Jeff and Richard Tandy (piano, keyboards) are the only original members of ELO to be found. I would defy anyone to distinguish this incarnate from the original ELO sound. Jeff Lynne is a genius and his genius shows through in ZOOM. To one who thinks Jeff has no stage presence, I say some performers are visual, i.e. Cher, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart. Some need only to be heard to be appreciated, i.e. Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne. When did you ever see Jeff animated and bouncing around on the stage? And to one who thinks the dts production to be poor, both the audio and video on my dvd are very near the quality of the Eagles, "Hell Freezes Over"...which we can all agree is THE standard. If you were never an ELO fan take a pass on this one. The ELO sound just doesn't capture today's audience, which is why the ZOOM tour failed (along with the worst marketing in the history of the world). If you are an ELO fan, this is as good as it will ever get...BUY IT
