5.0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFIQUE! Anne Barone has done it again!, October 3, 2000
For those of you who loved CHIC & SLIM, take notice of the wonderful follow-up volume! Filled with advice concerning health, relationships, fashion, and self-esteem, ENCORE is a must-have for any woman's library.
Having lived in France and experienced the beauty of the French lifestyle, Ms. Barone is a proponent of moderation -- something sadly lacking in our American society. We are a culture of "overconsumers," as is apparent not only in the way we eat, but also in the way we often misuse our finances and conduct our relationships. We also go overboard trying to be "perfect" -- but generally use the media standard as our own, which has inherent problems. Ms. Barone recognizes this, and offers a refreshing solution: a sense of healthy self. It is not a matter of becoming a vegetarian or a protein powerhouse; it is not a matter of buying size four jeans in the hopes of starving your way into them; it is not a matter of applying a mask of cosmetics to make others think you were born with a certain "look"; nor is it a matter of building a draining career only to procure wealth. Instead, it is about appreciating the beauty with which one is born, as well as savoring the beauty of one's surroundings. It is about establishing one's femininity and being so confident as to not need to become involved in a relationship to avoid being alone. It is about using money wisely, and controlling finances rather than having debt control you. In essence, it is about finding and expressing true joy - enjoying solitude, savoring art, making one's home a haven, taking pride in goals achieved, understanding the elegance of simplicity, and cherishing each age (one needn't be young to be a spectacular woman!).
Filled with sensible and savvy advice, delectable recipes, and an abundance of encouragement, CHIC & SLIM ENCORE is a wonderful gift to give to a mother, daughter, sister, friend -- or yourself! Its lessons will be treasured by any woman. Sit back, sip your coffee drink of choice, and indulge yourself in one of the best ways possible -- enjoy ENCORE and take it to heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Biblical fasting and its results, July 13, 2000
I've studied fasting for several years, but have never seen an informative and clear work dealing with Biblical methods. The author not only presents fasting as a historical action, but also relates a number of modern fasts that resulted in miracles. This text is highly recommended for those who wish to be inspired and motivated, whether they be religious or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another extraordinary work from Dr. Weil, May 8, 2000
Dr. Weil, arguably today's leading figure in integrative health, continues to educate the public on nutrition with his latest book. I ordered it almost immediately after hearing about it, and it has secured a permanent place on my shelf. Filled with essential information on fats, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins, the text provides a lucid explanation of what we need, how much we need, and how it will affect us.
As always, the good doctor is both learned and on target. For instance, he debunks the myths surrounding the "fad diets" of today, such as Atkins, Sugarbusters, the Zone and so on, and shows how such ways of eating do more harm than good. Other big pluses: excellent treatments of omega-3 fatty acids, shopping for organic foods, and alternative choices to the poor quality food most readily available today. Be prepared for eighty-five mouthwatering recipes ranging from Roasted Vegetable Soup to Raspberry Chocolate Pie -- delicious! The appendices are also vital, containing dietary advice for those who suffer from a number of ailments such as arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, ulcer, etc.
For those who feel Dr. Weil's plan is too "inconvenient" for one reason or another, consider this: how inconvenient is it to stuff your body full of toxins and then suffer the consequences? Indeed, if you want to start heading down the road to health, follow Dr. Weil's guidelines -- your body, mind, and spirit will thank you for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, but need to be more clearly organized, February 17, 2000
During my first reading of HOLD IT!, I was a bit confused and annoyed -- there was very little dealing with the actual different body shapes (cone, spoon, ruler, hourglass). Furthermore, the paragraphs following his tips rarely had anything to do with the tips themselves. However, Jackowski's aerobics, lunges, and so on have never done anything beneficial for my silhouette! The workout included in the back of the book does seem to be a one-size-fits-all, but at second glimpse it's apparent that it WOULD be beneficial for each of the four shapes/types. Essentially, just get out your jumprope and begin to get in shape -- this is a program you can believe in!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must" for any home!, November 1, 1999
I found this book for a friend who was having kidney problems and, intrigued, decided to look into it for myself. I am absolutely thrilled with what I've read, and am changing my entire eating program as a result. Jean Carper provides the reader with scientific facts in layman's terms, and uses a "thumbs up/thumbs down" system to debunk myths and provide further foundation for the true "miracle power" of food. She offers cardiovascular food cures, remedies for digestive troubles, cancer-fighting diets, foods to stave off depression, foods to prevent asthma. . .the list goes on and on. It leaves the reader with the realization that health is something we can *choose*. . .especially when armed with the knowledge Carper has given us.

5.0 out of 5 stars In my mind, this is the *only* "JCS" soundtrack to have!, October 21, 1999
Having seen the musical a number of times on stage and having seen the movie more times than I can remember, I remain a huge fan of "Jesus Christ Superstar," as presented by Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, and Yvonne Elliman. This is truly an outstanding presentation of incredible material, and I highly recommend it over any other version. I'm quite shocked by the reviews calling these tremendous actors' voices "weak" or "passive" -- I see no basis for this whatsoever. Truly, Ted Neeley is absolutely stellar in the role of Christ -- he is decidedly *not* passive, but incredibly emotional (which one would think is a requirement for the role!). Carl Anderson's performance actually elicits pity for the cursed Judas. . .and might even make one hope he was pardoned. Yvonne Elliman's voice is sweet and poignant -- her "I Don't Know How to Love Him" is beautiful. The entire soundtrack is haunting, and the instruments are far better on this version than on any of the others. What more does an audience need?!
