3.0 out of 5 stars A general book on monolithics, May 7, 2000
This is a general reference on refractories. Not being an expert in this area, this book covers a wide range of material. The book covers monolithic refractories (powder which is then generally combined with water before application by spraying, casting or gunning - not bricks).
Sections cover the raw materials and each individual sub-class within monolithics. There are sections on wear mechanisms and manufacturing techniques.
The book has a lot of information which is quite useful, but working in a research setting, I am not too sure how useful this would be to the professional working in the area. There is little information on the practical installation of refractories, rather more about the raw materials and the different properties about each class within monolithics.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ironmaking Volume, April 28, 2000
This is the second volume of The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel which covers ironmaking. Like the first volume on steelmaking, this volume gives an historical overview of ironmaking.
Sections include: the fundamentals (Thermodynamics, reactions, physical properties) of iron and steelmaking; Refractories; Coal & Coke; Iron Ores; The Blast Furnace design & operation; and Direct Smelting processes.
I found the sections on the physical properties and thermodynamics are quite good. A good reference for people working in the industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable SQL reference, April 26, 2000
This is a great book to begin to understand how to write queries for databases in SQL. It starts off with the simple queries, and moves onto the more advanced commands that are used for maintaining databases.
It is a simple and clear text, and has been an invaluable source whilst creating databases and writing code to interact with these databases.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beginners guide to FORTRAN, April 26, 2000
I used a copy of a previous edition of this book when completing my undergraduate degree. When I had to do a fair bit of programming recently, and needed to brush up on FORTRAN, I purchased this book.
It is a simple book that outlines the fundamentals of FORTRAN. It is more of a beginners guide than anything else. The shortcoming of this book is that there is no reference or summary section of all the commands - it really isn't a desktop reference. The advantage of this type of book is the number of good examples that it contains.

5.0 out of 5 stars No wonder they call this a desktop refernce!, April 26, 2000
Not being a unix user, I purchased this as a reference to pick up and find the tool/command that I needed to use. It lays out the commands in a simple and easy to follow way (with examples!) explaining the options for the commands.
There are chapters on shell scripts that are also quite useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good general reference text, April 26, 2000
Coming from and Iron-making research and devlopment background, I found this volume a useful tool in coming to terms with the various processes that are used for steelmaking.
Additionally information is provided for the physical properties and thermodynamics for the iron & steel making processes. Other operational issues as such as refractory design are also covered.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fundamental book on CFD, April 26, 2000
This is one of the ground breaking texts. I purchased a copy on the recommendation of a collegue (who has worked in the field for a while) when I started in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
I found the book a little bit difficult to get into. Having spent more time working through CFD problems, it all now makes sense - although I would recommend beginners to find something else more recent (such as An introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The finite volume method by Versteeg & Malalasekera) that has some of the more recent developments in the field.
It is still an invaluable reference to have on your bookshelf as it covers the fundamentals of CFD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every Chemical Engineer, April 26, 2000
This is a great place to start to look for information within the field of process/chemical engineering. The size of the book can be a little daunting, although the handbook is broken into logical sections that once the reader has come to grips with the way the book is organised, makes finding information easy.
It is not a definitive authority on everything in the field - but it is a really great place to start to look for information on that problem that you need to look at, and have no idea where to start.
Two very useful sections are the conversion and physical properties.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive list of properties for many compounds., April 19, 2000
This book covers a widee range of physical properties. The major criticism that I have for this reference book is that the data is presented in a way that is not always readily useful in creating spreadsheets and programs to use the data efficiently.
Other more historical references also have a more comprehensive representation of the data that in this book (although it would be difficult to fit all the detailed information of every compound out there into one book). Not a bad place to start to look for information - but no means a bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to CFD, April 12, 2000
Having first started to read Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow by Patankar and finding it a little complex, this book set out the fundamentals in a logical way. The use of examples throughout the book were a good learning tool.
A good introductory book to using CFD.
