5.0 out of 5 stars Easily a 5 Star Movie, April 27, 2014
What more can I say than that this satire on "The Man" was absolutely hilarious. Love the cameo appearance from the great late James Brown. Dave Chappelle almost stole the whole movie with his weed-smoking Conspiracy Brother role. My favorite scene is at the very beginning when Undercover Brother whirls around in his car without a drop of his orange juice escaping his cup. Sets the scene for what turns out to be a laugh out loud fun ride.

P.S. Sistah Girl hasn't aged a day and is now on SNL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely one of Bette Davis' Best Films, April 20, 2014
I thought it was a comedy given the description, but this movie was so much more. Very emotional story about a long married couple who toy with the idea of having a grand wedding for their daughter. A perfectly romantic movie which will have you sniffling before it's done.

Easily a five star movie.

Watched this movie again yesterday after having watched it when it first came out. This movie is a masterpiece. It's really too bad that more of these type of movies haven't been made.

Although I couldn't understand everything that was said due to the dialect, what stood out to me was the story of Ibo's landing and everyone kissing the Bible and talisman as Nana Peazant held it in her hands. The young girls in their white flowing dresses, playing on the beach, also stands out as a beautiful scene.

The pride in their African heritage and the hope of a better life in the American mainland permeates the movie. And what I love most of all is that although it touches on racism (rape, slavery, anti-lynching), it focuses totally on African Americans and a unique culture which developed and was nurtured among the Gullah people. Nana Peazant's warning to her departing family left me in tears. It's a reminder to all of us that we are to remember our ancestors and their sacrifices and not be ashamed of who we are.

We need more geniuses like Julia Dash and more movies like Daughters of the Dust.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the (Negative) Hype, January 8, 2014

Loved it! Very edge-of-your-seat sci-fi/adventure movie. Also a great story about a father-son relationship. Jaden did a pretty good job as a traumatized teenager trying to impress his military, hard core father. If you love movies with scary monsters and narrow escapes, give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Way Up, November 19, 2013
This review is from: Pandorum (DVD)
Excellent sci-fi/action/horror movie. Kept me on the edge of my scene for its entirety. One of the best sci-fi movies I've watched in a while. Don't let the fact that it did poorly at the box office fool you into skipping this gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never watched the TV show at all, August 28, 2013
This review is from: The Addams Family (DVD)
Have to say this movie was hilarious. Between Joan Cusack's con artist character and the feisty daughter played by Christina Ricci, I was in stitches. Didn't think I would enjoy it given that I've never watched the tv series and always thought that the concept was too dark and spooky.

The way Wednesday Addams alters the camp play is absolutely priceless and for me the best part of the movie. Funny but political at the same time.

Love Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, so wasn't disappointed at all with this sci-fi film. Very entertaining, great story, and quick paced. I have to admit that the villain played by Sharlto Copley was spot on -- hated him thoroughly. LOL.

Yes, the story is very utopian, but so what? It's a fantasy. Not sure if I would call this a feel good movie, but I'll say that it had a good ending.

Don't want to give anything away but the ending wasn't satisfactory. I'll give it major points for keeping me on the edge of my seat though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous read, July 11, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
What would happen if Mr. Wolf sued the three little pigs? This witty and well-paced novel brings that story to life. This book is a great read for teenagers and adults alike.

It will grab you from the very beginning and you'll want to see who prevails in the epic legal battle of the animal kingdom. There are so many interesting characters that are brought to life and leap off the page, including the hard nosed Attorney Priggly, and the dapper and seasoned Counsel Boar, who battle each other in court for their respective clients.

It's wolves versus pigs. Pick your side and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great adventure, July 7, 2013
This review is from: Moby Dick (DVD)
Have never read the novel (started but didn't finish), but really enjoyed this film. Perhaps a tad too long, but given the story that needed to be told, I can understand the need for 3 hours. I thought the cast was great and that the story moved along at a nice pace to a very satisfying conclusion.
