I like it because i can now watch movies on android phones and tablets. Apple charges too much for memory on their devices. I admit that's all I use it for, so I can't comment on other features, or lack of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using it for backing up computer, streaming video, September 10, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Length:: 4:47 Mins

I've included a hands on video. It's not a walkthrough or a tutorial, just a short video you a feel for what the user interface looks like on android, Mac, and Windows machines. I'm not using it for business purposes, only for storing and streaming video and music, as well as doing backups. Others have written about the lack of documentation. I did not really get into the more advanced features, and if you are looking to use stronger security than what the machine has set up by default, you may need someone with experience or an IT professional to do that. I was only using it for fairly simple tasks, and the learning curve wasn't too bad. Once you get it up and running, and install the updates, the NAS showed up on all my computers, Mac, Windows 7, and Windows 8. The software they have you download has a menu item for accessing the advanced settings and features, which appear in a web browser window. This is where you set up additional accounts and file shares (basically a folder that can be accessed by any user that has been given permission by the admin, or made public).

I found all this fairly easy. Once I moved beyond this, the lack of documentation became more noticeable. I could not find any directions for setting up the NAS to work with Time Machine on my Mac. This turned out to be really easy once I found it, but it did take a little bit of trial and error. All I had to do was go into services in advanced settings and enable it by clicking a button. Very easy, once you know how. Once this was done, the NAS was able to do everything I needed, however I did look around in the directions on the website and couldn't find much there beyond the getting started sort of items. The website does not take beginners by the hand and explain everything it can do.

The hardware has worked great for what I've been using it for. I really can't tell much of a difference between the NAS drive and the drives on my computer as far as streaming media goes. I can play back full HD, uncompressed movies and they start playing very quickly, and can skip around with little or no noticeable pausing. Once the NAS was enabled for Time Machine, setting it up was about as easy as using a physically attached HD. The android app for streaming video has worked fine for me, as well. It has a low rating on google play, but you can see me using it at the end of the video part of my review.

So for the simple things I do with it, it has been working great. I will try to answer any questions if there's something you'd like more detailed info about, but keep in mind I am a home user, not a professional.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for light cleaning, August 17, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I live in a one bedroom apartment, and this little vacuum is pretty ideal for my situation. It's thin and light, so it doesn't take up much room when it's stored away, and the 2 in 1 design is also a real space saver. It's got a low profile and turns by rotating the handle a little bit, which makes it easy to maneuver. With 4 small LED's in front, cleaning underneath and around furniture is easy. It's battery powered, but I haven't had to recharge it after vacuuming a couple of times. The handheld detaches with a push of a button and separates smoothly from the rest of the vacuum, when you need to do a little spot cleaning or get at some shelves or anything else that's difficult to reach with the full sized vacuum. The design makes for convenient use.

It's not tremendously powerful, though its more than strong enough to clean up spilled crumbs or a little dirt. If you've got, say, kids or a big house where you throw a lot of parties and are doing some more serious cleaning where you have to deal with messes that have been ignored for a while and mashed into the floor, I'm not sure this vacuum would be up to that kind of thing. There are more powerful options out there for that kind of heavy duty cleaning. For light cleaning though, this is up to the task.

4.0 out of 5 stars A true diamond in the rough., July 26, 2014

I've seen a lot of micro budget horror movies, many of them involving zombies (a trendy subject right now). Netflix has got countless of them on their streaming service, old and new. The vast majority of them are awful, nearly unwatchable to even a diehard horror lover like myself, but when you finally find one of these made on a shoestring, shot in their backyard indie movies that is good, it makes it all worthwhile. If you're looking for a lot of zombie mayhem, you won't find it here. This is a character driven movie, focusing on the relationship of a couple of guys who were just friendly acquaintances before the outbreak but now have to deal with being stuck with each other every day of their lives as well as with the flesh hungry living dead.

It's something most of those other indie horror movie makers probably don't have the writing chops to pull off, so they give us Romero imitations with weak special affects. When there is violence, it tends to happen off camera. I'm guessing Gardner and his crew would have liked to include a little more action, but just didn't have the special affects budget to show you zombies getting their skulls crushed in convincingly. Personally I didn't miss it too much. There are plenty of horror films in which you can get your fill of that kind of thing. It's much rarer to find one that is this smart and well made. It's not just the writing that's a cut above what I've come to expect from these kinds of movies, but the cinematography, the acting, the make up (keep in mind this thing obviously had a very low budget). A lot of it was shot with a handheld, but they wisely resist the temptation to try to impress us with a lot of those Saving Private Ryan-esque shaky cam shots.

3.0 out of 5 stars The extras are better than the movie., June 30, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'll give this a generous two stars for the movie and four for the presentation. The plot is pretty threadbare and there are some absurd plot twists. It's closer to soft porn than a horror/thriller really, as the characters have a frequent tendency to get physical with each other. At one point Linda Hayden's character starts kissing Fiona Richmond despite the total lack of any kind of attraction or flirtation between them up to that point, while her boyfriend is in the house, and she enthusiastically goes along with it. It's that kind of movie.

Fiona Richmond was a "glamour model" and seems right at home here, but Hayden and Kier really seem to be slumming it. In the interview with Hayden included in the extras, she spends quite a bit of time bashing the movie, even saying it's the only movie she's ashamed of making. And she worked mostly in B movies that were often lacking in quality.

This is one of those discs where the extras actually were more interesting than the movie, especially if you can get a copy with the documentary about the Video Nasties scare. I'd heard of the nasties scare but had no idea how far the censors went, even raiding the homes of some movie collectors to make examples of them.

It really made me appreciate being an American. Yes, there's censorship here too, but it's never come close to going that far in my lifetime. The MPAA can be bad, but they don't have the ability to ban a movie outright and when it comes to the home video market, there isn't much government censorship. That's mostly limited to stuff that involves crimes being committed, like child pornography. Usually what happens here is studios will force filmmakers to make cuts in order to get a certain rating in order to play in more theaters or have a larger audience. The MPAA is actually not a government agency - the government's not directly involved. It's more a case of self censorship by the theaters and studios. And when movies are released on home videos there's no government board that reviews the movies to decide what they think is or isn't acceptable. You'll frequently see uncensored, unrated versions of movies, and no one has to worry about running them by the government before putting them out.

Got a great deal for these at 160 dollars. Using them with a Sony Stereo receiver and Subwoofer for my PC. They really outdo any PC speakers you might get at a similar price, IMO. They also take up a lot more room, along with the receiver.

3.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for the tablet, 1 for customer service, Asus's business practices, June 23, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I'm putting this review up quickly because I have been having some issues with the Asus website and free "content and services" that I think people may want to consider before buying this product. Hopefully Asus will make a point of fixing these problems quickly, and then I will adjust the review.

So far the hardware has been fine. The tablet and keyboard have been running smoothly for the few hours that I've been trying it out. It's powerful enough to run HD mkv files without any slowdowns. The screen's bright but the colors don't pop, and the keyboard doesn't have the features that the more expensive Transformer keyboards do. There's no extra battery or memory card slots there. The keys and the layout of the keyboard look and feel about the same as other Transformer keyboards I've tried. There's bound to be some compromises on a tablet at this price.

The Asus website has been a huge disappointment, though. For a major manufacturer, it's almost shocking. The first thing I noticed is that images sometimes didn't load. Instead, I saw that little symbol that tells you there's supposed to be an image but the image file won't show up. It took many attempts to register the tablet. I kept getting an error message for the wrong serial number, despite double and triple checking, until I was able to submit the form. The free "content and services" then did not come through. Even the one that's through Asus, for a free 2 year upgrade to 500 GB of web storage. The E music offer did go through when I updated and ran their app, however you don't really get 75 free songs, you get 37.50 worth of store credit for signing up with them. It would only add up to 75 if every one that you bought were songs that sold at their minimum price of 50 cents.

I did get a customer service representative fairly through their online instant messaging link, but all he did was give me a link to email them about the problem. He seemed to have no idea about the offers on the Amazon listing. And the page he sent me to also failed to work. I got an error message that told me "cannot be empty", even though I filled out every field on the form, even the optional ones. Error message after error message, and it wouldn't tell me what was missing so that I could fix it.

Even if you are not interested in any of the offers in the amazon listing, I think buying this tablet might be a little bit of a gamble. Even something as simple as redeeming some offers that come with the tablet has been frustrating. I would hate to have to deal with them if there was some kind of hardware failure and I needed to use the warranty.

Edit: I've had more time to spend with the tablet and am just as happy with that as I was when I received it. A few other points: The keyboard does have a usb input, so while the keyboard is attached you can use external hard drives and other peripherals. Very handy. Typing on it isn't too bad. It's cramped, even though I have small hands for a man, but that cannot be helped with one of these small keyboards. The trackpad is the one part of the transformer that actually felt cheap. It just feels flimsy and it has this annoying tendency to move the pointer when you press down on it. You have to push down pretty deeply for a click to register, which probably causes this. The Atom processor is pretty zippy too. I tested it with an MKV file at 1080p and it ran well.

Problems with Asus's website and customer service continue, though. I did get a code for the Zinio subscriptions through e-mail a couple of days after sending in a complaint on the website, which took many tries, just like registering the tablet did. Asus did nothing to explain how to redeem the offers mentioned on the Amazon listing, so I have no idea if I got the code because I complained or because it takes a couple of days to process it after you register with Asus. Again, ASUS gives you no instructions and doesn't tell you what to expect. With the e-music offer, it appeared after I updated the e-music app. You have to register to receive it that way, though, so I'm not sure it would work if you're already an e-music customer.

And I STILL haven't received the free 500 GB from ASUS, days after sending in a complaint, or a reply from them. This is easily the best of the offers that ASUS says they are giving away. I'm going to try Tien, who responded to my complaints in the reply section of my review. I shouldn't have to through so much hassle and confusion to get these things. Either they are purposely making it difficult for people to take advantage of these offers, or they are just disorganized, but they need to do a better job communicating with customers. What happens if you get a lemon and need your tablet replaced or repaired? Is it going to be this difficult to deal with the company?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire!, June 19, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Length:: 1:20 Mins

Assembly was fast and easy. All I needed to do was screw the legs onto the circular stand and attach the handle to the cover. It has a fairly solid, durable feel to it, but it was light enough that I was able to move it on my own. The copper bowl lends it a classy look, even after its been used and the inside of the bowl is scorched and stained with ashes. The metal grill at the bottom gives a fire enough room to breath. The pit stands far enough off the ground that the concrete patio we had it sitting on didn't get too hot. The only thing that was really lacking was the canvas cover, which has a thin inner layer that began to peel away after a couple of weeks (see end of video). The metal cover is mostly wire mesh, which will let a fire or cinders breath, but the drawback to that is that water will get inside if it rains. If you're handy you can probably come up with a solution to that problem yourself. So far we've had good experiences with this fire pit. It's the right size to have a comfortable little fire and looks good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belkin case review, May 27, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)

This is a well designed case. The plastic frame that holds the tablet in place makes it easy to remove it and put it back. It's very thin, so it won't add too much bulk or weight to what already is a large tablet, though it also won't add much protection in case of a fall. That's the price you pay for keeping the case thin. Build quality is great. The felt interior and fake leather exterior look and feel great, and the notches in the case for the camera and the stylus line up perfectly. The notches for putting the case in stand position are small, but the felt like material inside the case has kind of a grippy quality so it sticks. At 69.99, it's pretty costly for a basic cover/stand, but it'd be worth buying once the price comes down. I've included a short hands on video so you can get a closer look. Music by Kevin MacLeod from his Incompetech royalty free music site.

5.0 out of 5 stars expensive, but impressive, May 19, 2014
I've been using this for a few days, and am very impressed so far. It practically sets itself up. All I had to do was enter a password for the base station and the wifi network. The base station is making file sharing really easy as well. My external hard drive showed up immediately on my iMac, and once I downloaded the airport utility on my Windows 8 laptop and Windows 7 HTPC, no other setup was needed to access the files on those machines. Streaming works great from the shared drives, as I can watch HD video without interruptions. I had high expectations for the base station because of its price, but it's lived up to them. It's been fast, reliable, and easy to use, even with Windows products.
