5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable & Great Value, August 14, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm a beginner tap student and bought these based on the other good reviews and Bloch's reputation for quality tap shoes. They arrived super-fast and are sturdy, have a very comfortable footpad, and are true to size. If they were made in the US, they'd be perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Classical Highlights, February 15, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sunday With the Times (Audio CD)
This 4-CD set contains highlights--generally the best-known sections--of popular works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Copland, Debussy, Dvorak, Grieg, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Pachelbel, Puccini, Saint-Saens, Schubert, Strauss Jr., Tchaikovsky, Verdi, and a few others. All selections are instrumental; there are no choral works included. Performers include the London Philharmonic, the London Festival Orchestra, the Vienna Folk Opera Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony, Collegium Aureum, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Melos Quartet, and many others. The performances are, without exception, outstanding, as is the sound quality. Some selections, such as Massenet's exquisite Meditation from "Thais," performed by the John Arpin Palm Court Trio, are among the best recorded versions I've heard.

This set would be an excellent introduction to classical music, or suitable for anyone looking for a high-quality "best of" collection.

1.0 out of 5 stars An insult to all veterans, September 27, 2004
The first thing I thought of, in reading through this book, was: Is this what our current soldiers have to look forward to? People later second-guessing the decisions behind their medals for political reasons? The careful reader will note that the "witnesses" in this book did not work directly with John Kerry. Why not learn about Kerry's war record from an actual historian, someone trained to interview people, examine sources, and discern the truth? Check out "Tour of Duty," by Douglas Brinkley, the historian who succeeded Stephen Ambrose as head of the Eisenhower Center in New Orleans. Another tip: "Unfit" is a quickie, thrown-together book, so slim that it can be read at Costco in the time it takes your family to shop. If you want to have a look at it, do so at the store; don't give these veteran-bashers your financial support!

Old Curiosity Shop (Dickens Collection)
Old Curiosity Shop (Dickens Collection)

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST EDITION OF THIS BOOK, September 5, 2000
This edition of the Old Curiosity Shop is outstanding. It contains all the original illustrations drawn for the book, very helpful footnotes, a chronology of Dickens's life, etc. The book takes the reader on a wild journey through the English countryside with Little Nell, an angelic girl, and her troublesome grandfather, and features a host of amusing characters as only Dickens can draw them. While it was being written in serial form, it was so popular that sailors returning to port in England were known to shout to people on shore to ask what was going on with Little Nell. Today, however, you can miss some of Dickens's nuance and humor if you don't have good footnotes to turn to. The notes in this book explain obscure terms, references to contemporary popular culture, places where the action occurs, etc. If you are going to read this book, this is the edition to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Help for the Private Collector, January 23, 2000
This book was assigned reading in the Museum Studies program I completed several years ago. I found it to be very readable and useful. It is geared to the person who is serious about preserving the treasures he or she has collected or inherited. Among its lessons is the fact that virtually everything we do to maintain our everyday household objects is not appropriate for objects that we would like to see survive for the long term. This book provides valuable guidance on what can be done to preserve the objects we value most. Today, I am a curator of a diverse museum collection, and still find this book helpful and a good refresher.
