4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read, January 15, 2015

It was like reading Twilght Zone episodes or watching old movies on Creature Feature. Lots of golden age fun. I recommend reading some of these stories and then putting on a DVD of This Island Earth or Forbidden Planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough examination, October 31, 2013
American-Built Packets and Freighters of the 1850's, is a fantastic and very thorough examination of the subject.

The author blends narrative, very detailed schematics, and historical reference together to completely tell the tale of these vessels and their impostance to the economy of America and the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Context is the key, November 8, 2012
They say that context is everything and this book provides needed context to turbulent year 1862, and to the man, Abraham Lincoln.

I read a lot of Civil War history, the problem is that by focusing on a particular battle or topic of that war it is easy to lose sight of the broader picture.

David Von Drehle has provided that needed context with this book. While the book appears to be another Lincoln biography/history, the author does an excellent job of weaving many additional players into the story.

The reader will gain perspective not only on Lincoln, but on McClellan, Grant, Mary Todd, Seward, Lord Palmerston, Emperor Louie Napoleon, and the other people that had great impact on the President and the nation during this crucial period.

This is not just a simple retelling of the history of the times. To understand the man Abraham Lincoln, we need to understand the events, the people, the issues, and the pressures that made him the greatest President in American history. This book succeeds in it's task.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping story of war, September 12, 2012
This is a fantastic and at times disturbing look at a side of war rarely talked about.

The author does a superb job of relating the stress and day to day routine (if it can be called that) of a trauma surgeon in one of the most dangerous places on earth.

At times the narrative slows it's pace much like the experience of soldiers in a combat zone, days of boredom followed by seconds of shear terror, yet it is always compelling.

Hurting with God: Learning to Lament with the Psalms
Hurting with God: Learning to Lament with the Psalms

5.0 out of 5 stars It's okay to ask god "Why?"., June 19, 2012
I have heard it said that the Psalms are the most human book in scripture. They chronicle all the highs and lows of what it means to be us. They also show plain truth to how we relate to a God that is sometimes hard to grasp.

This book does a wonderful job to show that God is fine with questions about our doubts, struggles, and pain. He understands what it means to have lost and grieves with us as we move through this fallen world.

Prof. Pemberton has written a wonderful book that shows that it is okay to ask God "Why?'.

Praise comes in many forms, and honest lament is on of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, tight story, June 4, 2012
This review is from: Galveston (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this story very much. The Civil War action was written in a manner that draws the reader in.

The author weaves a tight story with characters that are well fleshed out and not two dimensional. The storyline is a good, gripping tale set against the backdrop of the War in the West.

The Western theater of the Civil War usually takes a back seat to the East among Historians and novelists alike. There are volume upon volume of books about Gettysburg, Bull Run, and Antietam. The heros of the East as well usually take center stage. So it was refreshing to get a different flavor with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy history., November 28, 2010
A fantastic book. Arlington National Cemetery, the most hallowed ground in the United States, deserves to have a book written of this caliber. Mr. Poole does an excellent job of blending the history with the personal stories of the brave men and women who gave the last full measure of devotion to their country, as well as those tasked with keeping their memory alive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good "Soviet side" history, March 18, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Very good history of a small corner of a much larger history. Missing in this account is details from the German point of view. It would have been a nice balance to see the operations as both sides saw them occuring and their reactions to them.

The maps were useful but not handy enough as they were compiled in the back of the book.
