4.0 out of 5 stars Great characterization, June 15, 2014

This review is from: Eden in Winter (Kindle Edition)
As with all of RNP's books, the characters are very well-developed and you really feel like you know them. I stumbled across this by accident (I thought I had read most of his books), and was surprised to discover that it is the third in a series - I will have to go back and complete the rest of the trilogy soon!

Ada's Algorithm: How Lord Byron's Daughter Ada Lovelace Launched the Digital Age through the Poetry of Numbers

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating account..., April 11, 2014
I've seen a documentary on Ada Lovelace's life, which covered a lot of the same ground, but in much less detail, so it was great to read this well-researched account of her life. I've always agreed with the author's "what if" view on Ada and Babbage's breakthroughs in the mid-1800s - the computer age might have started much earlier than it did.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, April 18, 2013

This is one of the best written books of this genre that I have read for a long time. Susan Cain uses a powerful combination of personal anecdotes, historical figures and modern research findings to illuminate the experience of introverts in a world that values extrovert qualities for the most part. She provided valuable insights into my own (introvert) personality, and some very useful practical tips for coping with extrovert demands. I cannot recommend this highly enough to anyone who is quiet (or introverted), or to extroverts who want to understand the people around them better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sweep of history, April 18, 2013

While I don't think this trilogy is as good as Follett's earlier work (Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, in particular, which were brilliant), it is a very good read. I thoroughly enjoy the insight into the historical period being covered, with the added drama of the stories of the fictitious characters that he uses to illustrate the times. While the coincidences of the encounters between his characters that weave their stories together sometimes call for a rather large suspension of disbelief, the overall story is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, December 31, 2012

I've long been a big fan of Pratchett's Discworld series, so approached this with some caution. However, it turned out to be an excellent read (and based on a very thought-provoking premise). I hope to see more from this duo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Took a while to get into, December 31, 2012

It took me a while to start to get the large cast of characters straight, but this then turned into a very gripping (if sad) tale. Good to see that she can write good books for adults as well as the hugely successful HP series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, March 6, 2010

While I'm not a great fan of Kutless' other albums, I loved their first "worship" album (Strong Tower), so I was pleased to see that they had released another. If anything, this is even better than the first, with an excellent selection of great classics and new songs. The CD was put together during a month-long retreat and the spiritual depth shines through the music strongly. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this book when I was sixteen!, March 6, 2010

This review is from: The Best Question Ever (Hardcover)
This book contains excellent advice for anyone at any life-stage (I read it in my mid-40's), but is probably most applicable for young people who starting to have to make important life-decisions. Stanley provides an excellent, Biblical "filter" for guiding one through a decision, and backs this up with some practical applications. Very highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great content, February 17, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book after hearing a presentation Groppel made at a conference a few years ago, and being impressed with what he had to say there.

The content of this book is great: simple, practical, accessible suggestions for improving your "health and happiness" through better exercise, diet, emotional balance, etc. I particularly like Groppel's pragmatic views on diet and exercise, which are not at all prescriptive, and thus attainable for anyone, no matter what their age and current activity level. I'm slowly trying to adopt his approaches and am finding them helpful. My one criticism is that the book is not very well-written: he tends to ramble a little at times and say similar things in multiple sections of a chapter in a rather unstructured way. If you can put up with that minor problem, you should get a lot of benefit from the book.

This review is from: Bananagrams (Toy)
I played this for the first time with some friends on New Year's Eve, and enjoyed it so much that I bought it for myself (and as a gift for other friends). It's a simple, fun game that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. There are several, simple variations that allow you to adjust play for the length of time available, which is also great (Banana Cafe is my favourite). Highly recommended.
