5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly debunks the "saturated fat" is-good-for-you myth with hard data ..., April 14, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Thoroughly debunks the "saturated fat" is-good-for-you myth with hard data and clear explanations. He also bashes sugar, refined carbs, statins, blood pressure medications and invasive heart surgery, all with solid data to back him up. Read this book, change your diet, and save your life.

Script Selling in Goodluckland: How to sell your script in Hollywood
Script Selling in Goodluckland: How to sell your script in Hollywood

4.0 out of 5 stars A MUCH-NEEDED SLAP IN THE FACE, January 31, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Tells it exactly as it is: Hollywood rarely buys original scripts anymore, and almost never from unknowns. Even if you get great coverage or win contests, odds are, overwhelmingly, you still won't sell anything. Forget posting your script online, pitching, writing to agents, schmoozing at seminars, and all the other things writers do to get noticed. You still won't sell. That stings. But a wake-up call is in order. Yes, there are exceptions to the author's pessimistic reportage of the field, as a few lucky scribes are struck by lightning every year. (Same odds literally or metaphorically). But as Andrea stresses, and I agree, if you love the craft enough, you'll continue to write no matter how much Hollywood blows you off.

I took one star off my review for poor grammar and spelling. Andrea's obviously not writing in her native tongue here. Also, the book is significantly shorter than the page count would suggest, as the bottom and top page margins are huge.

1.0 out of 5 stars CHEAP JACKET, ZIPPER BROKE 3RD DAY, October 14, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The flimsiest zipper I've ever seen on a piece of clothing. It gave me trouble from the first day, getting caught, tearing apart, snagging (not to mention, it's for left-handed people, although maybe this is how they line up their zippers in China), and by the third wearing, it was broken. I couldn't budge it one way or the other.

When contacted, the company offered a $2 refund to get the zipper replaced and repaired by a seamstress. They would not take the jacket back, even though it was defective from the beginning. The nearest seamstress to me is miles away, and the charge for repair will be close to the cost of the jacket.

This company does not operate with the same sense of fairness and integrity as an American company. They can barely speak and write English and, after the sale, they simply don't care.

1.0 out of 5 stars HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, January 11, 2014
This review is from: August Rush (DVD)
The blood sugar spike you feel while you watch? Normal. It's there to dampen brain cells so you'll believe it's a good movie. Spandex doesn't stretch quite this far, but it's comfortable to believe the world operates this way, with everything working out in the end, and all the ugly fat of reality safely tucked away. Like most religions. Don't question, just enjoy the fantasy. :)

2.0 out of 5 stars NEEDS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT OR STAR POWER, December 24, 2013
This review is from: Europa Report (DVD)
This movie made a couple of fatal mistakes. There is little or no character development, so we don't give a damn about anyone. There also appears to be no central hero that we want to route for. Ripley in Alien had virtually no character arc and very little character development other than the fact she was a tough cookie, but Sigourney Weaver is so charismatic and presents such a strong presence and the alien concept was so fresh and menacing, they didn't need to focus on character arcs. This movie illustrates why you pay a star actress or actor so much money. No star power? No character development to make up for the lack of star power? You've got to have one or the other. The clips/lost footage falls flat and is at times confusing. Better to tell a straight-ahead story, so we don't know ahead of time who survives. Really badly wanted to like this movie. Even the monster at the end disappointed. It's amazing to me that with so much incredible sci-fi literature out there that Hollywood keeps generating crap.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE, October 31, 2013
This review is from: October Project (Audio CD)
This CD lacks only one thing: a good publicist. It contains some of the most beautiful, engaging music I've heard in 30 years and, as a music store owner who listens to music six days a week, I feel more than qualified to make comparisons. This so richly deserves to go on any music-lovers all-time best list. It would make a haunting and absolutely transportive soundtrack. What a shame the vast majority of Americans will never hear it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware Deteriorating Durability, September 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have bought these jeans forever, but I'm afraid the durability that so impressed me in the past has gone missing these past couple of years. The back pockets, in particular, begin to tear out within a year, although I carry absolutely nothing in them.
One pair I bought last year had a defective zipper, which, no matter what I do, will not stayed zipped.
I'm switching to other jean brands until Levi gets its quality control back.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, May 19, 2011
This review is from: Angels & Cigarettes (Audio CD)
I discovered this album without knowing about any of Eliza's previous music, so I don't have any preconceived notions of what this is "supposed" to be. All I know is this: I own a music store with thousands of CDs, and we play music all day long, 7 days a week, and this is the most beautiful album I've listened to this year, and it ranks up there among the best I've heard in the last five years. Who cares if it's not the same as what she's done in the past? This music is brilliant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absurd pandering, November 17, 2009
Wow, where do you start with such nonsense? The broad, sweeping generalizations Alter makes about men, whom he confuses with dysfunctional men? The projection of his own admitted inadequacies onto virtually every man in America? The utter brainwashing from his obviously much stronger and feminist wife?

Where's the clinical data? Or are observations from therapy clients a fair representation of the rest of society's males?

Alter's convinced that men are bad because he hears it from the verbal, domineering women who show up in his therapy office and point their fingers at their non-verbal, male mates. Aha! No good defense, heh? Ye must be guilty!

It's amazing that Alter can't see a possible alternative; perhaps the men have shut down for a reason.

That he's been steeped (fogged?) in feminist dogma is evident on nearly every page. "Women are all about connection and men are not," he asserts boldly. "Women are light years ahead of men in figuring (themselves) out and knowing how to create connections."

Hmmmmm. Is that why women suffer so much depression and go to therapy more often, because they know themselves so well?

Reading this book, I felt like the defendant in a court case who never got to speak and lost by default.

I know how much I resented this book and cried foul on nearly every page. To treat your man this unfairly, and yes, this selfishly, will only make your relationship worse, not better.

Read at your own risk.
