Wolverine Men's Basic Milled Leather Strap Belt, Black, 38
Wolverine Men's Basic Milled Leather Strap Belt, Black, 38

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nicely made., August 28, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Wolverine's leather belt is sturdily constructed, finished well, and fits well.

The belt is made of thick and supple leather, and unlike some other leather belts it actually smells like leather. The front of the belt is done in a matte finish and has a nice leather grain. The inside of the belt is finished in suede. The buckle and hardware are made of matte "battered" silver. The whole thing is put together very well and feels great in your hand and around your waist. One thoughtful touch is that the holes are reinforced on the back of the belt, so they won't stretch or tear easily.

The overall look of the belt is very causal. It works best with jeans and for running around town. You won't want to wear this to business meetings, fancy dinners, or weddings.

The sizing is good and the middle hole is about the belt's advertised length,

All in all... a great great belt.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works well and it's super simple., August 26, 2015

GE's mechanical timer is simple, nicely made, and small.

The timer is made completely of plastic, but everything feels solid and well made. The timer is very compact and not much larger than a box of playing cards.

It's very simple to use. There is a polarized plug on the right hand side of the timer and on the front of the timer is a rotating "clock" that has pins around the outside edge. To active the plugged in item you simply slide the pins in or out. You can set the timer to turn to activate in 15 minute increments, or you can have it run all the time by flipping the switch on top. The pins are attached to the timer, so they cannot be lost. To set the current time you simply rotate the outer ring until the correct time lines up with the arrow on the front.

I've been using it for a couple of months now to turn a small lamp on and off in our guest bedroom. I have it set to turn on and off at a few times from 8 PM to 12 AM. It works perfectly, makes little noise, and runs accurately.

All in all... a great little timer.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Wheaton Terrier loves it!, August 26, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've been feeding my Wheaton Terrier Mix this food for a few days now and she loves eating it and I have seen no issues.

The food itself consists of tiny pebble shaped dry kibbles. The pieces are brown in color and a little bigger than an M&M or a coffee bean.

My Wheaton gobbles the food right up without issue, although to be fair she will eat almost anything! I've been monitoring her stool for the past few days and have noticed no changes in its consistency or frequency. I have also had no issues with gas or gurgles from her tummy.

For my 25 pound dog it is recommended to feed 1.5 cups daily, so I give her 1/2 a cup in the morning and 1 cup at night.

All in all... a great dog food.

$2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America
$2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America
by Harry Shaefer
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $15.40

4.0 out of 5 stars Sheds light on those left behind., August 19, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
$2.00 a Day is an eye-opening account of exactly how the poorest among us really live their lives, and how the welfare system in this country became so convoluted and weak.

The book tells the stories of a handful of different families who are trying to get by on what amounts to about $2.00 a day. These people all live in terrible situations. They are sharing houses with lots of extended family (in one case there are over 20 people in one house), they are working miserable on-call jobs, they are trading SNAP benefits for cash, and even selling themselves. The accounts are all vivid and matter-of-fact. There's no dramatizing here, but then again there doesn't need to be. Perhaps the most surprising aspect is that despite the awful circumstances most of them still carve out a life for themselves, and find happiness in small pleasures. All of them want to work, want a place of their own, and want to make it. That's what this country promises.

Sometimes the promises fall short, so the authors also spend time explaining how welfare, SNAP, and the EIC came to be and how the monies are divided. Unfortunately, all types of welfare programs are underfunded, shelters are cutting back, and cash assistance programs are nil. It seems that we as a nation have forgotten about our most vulnerable citizens and instead of supporting them in their time of need we are tossing them aside and treating them as leeches.

The image of the "Welfare Queen" is all too vivid in our culture, when the exact opposite is true. Most people who are among the working poor got there through no fault of their own, and want very badly to work and be independent. The authors posit that if we invested more in cash assistance programs, raised the minimum wage, and built more affordable housing we can help not only the poor but the country as a whole.

This topic might seem dry and divisive but the authors do a wonderful job of keeping the writing interesting and not sounding too preachy or political.

All in all... we are only as strong as our weakest list, so let's strengthen them.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a great idea, but the implementation is a bit flakey., August 15, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Okidokeys Smart-Lock is a nifty device, and has real potential, but some of its features just don't work reliably.

The Okidokeys is very easy to install. You simply remove the back of your deadbolt (the non-keyed side) and install the Okidokeys in its place, the front of the lock remains the same and operates as it always did with the same key. The whole process is very straightforward and took me about 20 minutes. Unfortunately, two necessary pieces were missing from my box. I called Okidokeys and they sent out replacement parts and had them to me in two days. They were very nice and easy to work with.

Once the Okidokeys is installed you'll need to create an account on their website, download the app to your phone (Android or iOS), and sync the lock with you phone. This process wasn't that complicated, and took me about 15 minutes, but the website and app are both very rudimentary looking, and not very user friendly. They can both use some polish.

The lock itself is quite large. Size-wise, it reminds me of the boxes real estate agents hang off of your front door. With that in mind you'll want to make sure that your door doesn't have any trim pieces or windows very close to the deadbolt, as it could make installing the Okidokeys impossible.

The Okidokeys comes with three covers, brushed silver, brushed brass, and shiny brass. I used the shiny brass cover to match my other hardware. The covers, and a great deal of the lock itself are made of plastic. This is unfortunate, as it makes the lock feel cheaply made. Moreover, when the lock is operating it's very loud and sounds like a child's toy. Appearance-wise it's sleek and will work well with most decors.

In use the Okidokeys is a mixed bag. Firstly, you'll have to be within your phone's bluetooth range to use it. That's not a problem, but unlike a Nest thermostat (which runs off of Wi-Fi), you can't access the Okidokeys from afar. Thankfully the lock always responded to the app and unlocked and locked the door without issue. From opening the app, to having the door unlocked or locked, it took about 10 seconds total. Your total time will probably vary depending on your phone set-up. When you're inside the house you can use the button on the Okidokeys itself to operate the lock as well.

One feature I had about a 75% success rate with was the hands free unlocking. In theory you tell the Okidokeys the location of your house on a map, and when you get within a certain radius your phone will start trying to communicate with the Okidokeys to unlock it for you without having to reach for your phone. Unfortunately, as I mentioned before, sometimes it just didn't work. Just remember, you have to have the Okidokeys app running in the background for hands free to work, and I found that when I increased increase the search radius I had better results.

Some other features of the Okidokeys is automatic re-locking, but to use that you'll have to attach a small sensor to your door frame and inside the lock. I did not try this feature, as I figured it would lead to trouble, and I'd probably lock myself out unintentionally (if anyone is good at that, it's me!). One feature I really liked was the ability to receive notification on your phone of when the door is locked / unlocked and by whom.

FYI: I have a Kwikset deadbolt and an iPhone 5s running OS 8.4.1.

All in all... it's convenient, but I wish it was more consistant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute, nicely made, and full of fun!, August 13, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Manhattan Toy's Deer Play Mat is a wonderful little play mat with an adorable design and high quality materials.

The play mat is nicely made from a variety of different fabrics, but all of the fabrics are high-quality and the mat is nicely stitched and finished. There are no loose threads, bunched fabric, or sloppy seams. The pay mat comes very nicely presented. It is folded and bound with a white fabric ribbon.

The mat is basically round (it has a few small appendages), and about 2.5 feet in diameter. It's a decent size and not only gives a baby plenty of space to lay about but also can be used as a small blanket.

The design of the mat is quite adorable. In person in looks exactly like the photo, a sleeping deer. The color scheme is definitely aimed towards girls, with a mixture of light pinks, whites, and blacks.

There are lots of different fabrics and textures throughout the mat. There are soft fleece parts, fuzzy parts, satin parts, corduroy parts, and a bed-sheet type part. Besides all of the different textures there are also some sections that are filled with crinkle materials, for some audible and tactile fun. The bottom of the mat is done in one single piece of soft fleece fabric.

All in all... a wonderful little mat.

Glasstic Shatterproof Glass Water Bottle - 16oz - Flip Cap Sports Water Bottle - Blue
Glasstic Shatterproof Glass Water Bottle - 16oz - Flip Cap Sports Water Bottle - Blue
Offered by Glasstic Bottle Co
Price: $21.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A great water bottle. It's really nicely designed., August 8, 2015
Glasstic's water bottle is nicely made, works well, and people notice it and like it.

The Glasstic consists of four pieces. There is the flip-top cap, the screw-on base, the plastic outer shell, and the glass inner shell. There are also a few silicone o-rings to complete the necessary seals. Basically the glass inner shell slips into the plastic outer shell. The bottle will come completely assembled, but it's easy to take apart and clean as necessary. The bottle feels high quality and nice in the hand.

In use the Glasstic is a great water bottle. It holds 16 oz. of liquid and since there is bit of a vacuum created by the two chambers the bottle doesn't sweat (only a little bit of water condenses inside the two chambers) and beverages stay cold or hot for longer periods of time. It's not a true vacuum, mind you, but it's better than a single-walled bottle. The lid opens easily and swings back 270º so it will be completely out of your way. The opening is not huge, but I had no trouble drinking out of it, and there's plenty of room for a straw. The lid locks closed as well, but on my bottle the lock / unlock indictors were mixed up. So when the bottle was locked, it showed as unlocked, and vice versa. When everything is sealed and locked the bottle doesn't leak at all. On the back of the lid is a sturdy handle to carry the Glasstic.

Cleaning the Glassic will necessitate a bottle brush. The opening for the glass insert is simply too small to get a hand down inside of. Alternatively, you can place the whole thing in your dishwasher. Glasstic recommends hand washing the silicone seals, however. I ran the whole thing though my dishwasher, and it came out great.

All in all... a great idea, and it works great!

AXE Deodorant Stick, Phoenix, 3 Ounce
AXE Deodorant Stick, Phoenix, 3 Ounce
Price: $3.89

5.0 out of 5 stars Smells fresh and works well., August 8, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
AXE's Phoenix deodorant works well for me and has a nice scent.

The deodorant comes packaged in your standard variety container, with a twist bottom and a pop-off cap.

The AXE has a very masculine scent. It smells clean, and kind of soapy. It also has a hint of pine to it. Overall, it smells like you think a man would smell, if that makes sense.

I wore the AXE for two very active days. One day I lifted weights at the gym, spent some time at the office, and worked as a kitchen assistant. The next day I cleaned the house and mowed the lawn. Therefore, on both days I was fairly active. I was never sweating profusely, but I certainly did work up a sheen. At the end of both days the deodorant worked well. Unless you got very close to me you didn't smell any body odor at all. Overall, I don't sweat easily, so your milage may vary.

All in all... great deodorant.

Sterling Silver Cubic Zirconia Butterfly Stud Earrings (0.96 cttw)
Sterling Silver Cubic Zirconia Butterfly Stud Earrings (0.96 cttw)
Price: $18.68

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, especially considering the price., August 5, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
These sterling silver cubic zirconia butterfly earrings are nicely made, beautiful, and a great value.

The earrings feel high quality in the hand. The stones are securely set and the sterling silver is a heavy weight, and does not feel flimsy. The cubic zirconias have great sparkle and are beautifully cut. The butterfly clasps on the back hold securely to the post. The earnings come in a very nice black box, which is perfect for gift giving.

The earrings are simple and understated, but also quite beautiful. They would look equally at home on a teenage girl or a more mature woman. Moreover, they are simple and understated enough to be worn while running errands, but also just glitzy enough to wear to an upscale restaurant. The butterfly design is playful without being too cutsie.

They are quite petite, about the size of an M&M, so lots of different body types can feel comfortable wearing them, and they are very light in weight.

All in all... really nice earrings.

4.0 out of 5 stars You can always use some spare lightning cables!, August 3, 2015
Yellowknife's Lightning cables are well-made, come in fun colors, and have a unique flat design.

The Yellowknife cable is made of a thick and pliable plastic. Instead of a traditional round cable, the Yellowknife is done in a flat design. It looks and feels like a heavy-duty rubber band without the ability to stretch. It does, however, share a rubber band's ability to easily flex into manny different shapes. Construction quality is definitely a step-up from Apple's standard cable and should take a beating before it breaks down. The cable cames in a small zip-lock bag and includes a small microfiber wipe.

The cable worked well on many different chargers and in my MacBook Air. It had no problems connecting to my iPhone 5s and charged it quickly and without issue.

All in all... a great cable with a unique design.
