5.0 out of 5 stars By far, my favorite water bottle., December 19, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
About a year ago I decided to switch to a glass water bottle from plastic since I started to worry about what might be leaching out of the plastics. A lot of the glass bottles I found just had a screw on top, without a spout, so when I found this Lifefactory bottle, I pounced, and I'm very glad I did.

The Lifefactory is very nicely made. The glass is thick and well formed, and the silicone sleeve and plastic top are also well made. Sadly, there are a few finish issues on the sleeve, where there is a bit of extra silicone that was not trimmed. Still, the overall impression is that of a well made piece.

The 16oz bottle size is perfect for me. It's big enough, but not so large that it's cumbersome to carry around or fit into a car's cup holder. I really appreciated the small built-in handle and the wide spout for drinking.

The Lifefactory has a solid seal, and when the spout cover is on it does not leak at all. Since it's glass it gives absolutely no taste to the contents of the bottle.

Cleaning the Lifefactory is easy. I washed it by hand, and in the dishwasher, and regardless of the method, it always comes out clean. You will need to buy a bottle brush to clean it out by hand, however, since the opening isn't big enough to fit your hand into. I also like to slip off the silicone sleeve every once in a while and clean under there. It takes a bit of finesse and time to get it on and off, but it's worth the effort.

All in all... an awesome glass water bottle.

Soyjoy’s dark chocolate cherry bars are tasty and have simple, natural ingredients.

The bars look pretty similar to the photo, with a chocolate “bar” that contains dried cherries, raisins, and cranberries. The bar is about 1” square around, and about 5” long. They come individually wrapped and should travel very well. They aren’t sticky, so there won’t be any issues in the heat either.

The packaging says they are moister and fruiter so it’s a bit discerning that I found them to be quite dry overall. I wonder how much drier they used to be? Still they aren’t so dry that they are disgusting, but don’t expect to bite down into something approximating a moist brownie.

Taste-wise, however, they are quite good. They have a strong chocolate flavor, with a touch of sweetness from the dried berries.

The ingredient list is short and easy to understand and the bars have 140 calories per serving.

All in all… tasty and healthy.

Amazon’s key pendant is very nicely finished, quite cute, and comes properly packaged.

The pendant is small, but not so petite that it will disappear when worn. People will definitely notice it. It shiners nicely with polished silver, cubic zirconias, and multi-color gemstones, but it’s not garish or cheap looking either. There’s also some tasteful latticework on the bottom of the key. The included chain is very simple and delicate, but finished well with an easy-to-open clasp.

On a woman who is petite, 5’ tall, and about 110 pounds it looks perfect. It’s just the right size and hangs about 4” down from the neckline.

The packaging includes a black box and a small velvet pouch to store the necklace.

All in all… a nice little pendant.

Year of No Sugar: A Memoir
Year of No Sugar: A Memoir
by Eve O. Schaub
Edition: Paperback
Price: $10.77

4.0 out of 5 stars A really enjoyable read., December 11, 2014
Eve Schaub's memoir Year of No Sugar was a fun, and thought provoking book.

The book is pretty much exactly what the title says, her family (husband and two girls) agreed to go a full year without eating anything with added sugar in it. There were exceptions, mind you, they were allowed one dessert per month, for instance. What prompted this "experiment" was not that anyone was sick or felt crappy, but rather that she had seen a YouTube video that basically said sugar to our bodies is a poison.

The book is very well written, and quite enjoyable. Mrs. Schaub has a light and funny writing style. It covers all of their experiences trying to avoid sugar in a culture that adds sugar (or some kind of sweetner) to pretty much everything we eat. She found the easiest way to avoid the added sugars was to cook almost everything herself, and to substitute dextrose for sugar in baking.

It turned out that the family did experience some physical benefits from reducing their sugar intake, and indeed, Mrs. Schaub found she no longer enjoyed those super sweet desserts she was accustomed to having at the end of every meal (she never stop wanting them though).

What this book is not is a step-by-step method to living a new sugar-free life. There are no diet plans, or cleansing programs, but there are some recipes in the back. There's also not a ton of medical research, or scientific evidence put forth, but just enough to make her point that sugar is bad for us.

At the end of the day the book did have an effect on me, and I've decided to be more careful in the food that I eat.

All in all... even if you're not planning on cutting out sugar, it's a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great LED Lightbulb, December 11, 2014
ThorFire’s LED lightbulb is nicely made and feels solid in the hands. The bulb and base are both made of high quality plastics. While the ThorFire is heavier than a traditional tungsten lightbulb, it will not make your lamps top-heavy, so you don’t have to worry about them falling over easily. The ThorFire is about the size of a traditional 60-Watt bulb, but is oddly shaped, so clip-on lampshades won’t work with it.

The light the ThorFire gives of is bright, and it turns on instantly. There is no need to wait for it to warm up to full brightness. Even though the bulb I received listed it as Warm White, it gives of a much cooler light that a traditional bulb. Still the light is gave off was uniform and pleasant.

In use the bulb did not hum or flicker, and it stayed cool to the touch. Even the base didn’t get hot; as I’ve noticed some LED bulbs tend to do.

All in all… you can’t go wrong.

The Tumbleweed Society: Working and Caring in an Age of Insecurity
The Tumbleweed Society: Working and Caring in an Age of Insecurity
by Ashley N. Pugh
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $20.48

3.0 out of 5 stars It's an important topic, but this is a very heavy read., December 6, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Allison Pugh's The Tumbleweed Society follows the stories of many different families as they deal with the new reality of the American workplace post 1970. A workplace where pensions, job security, and commitment from your employer are a thing from the past. A workplace where you do the best job you can, but don't expect much in return, except respect and a paycheck. The book attempts to discern the link between this new job environment, and the changes it brings to personal relationships. Miss Pugh puts forth the thesis that since we don't get security from our careers anymore, we look for it from personal relationships more, often putting too much stress on those relationships when we need them more than ever.

It's definitely and important, and Miss Pugh certainly has done her research. There are lots of interviews with people from all different walks of life discussing both their work and personals lives. The problem is that the book is very, very dry. It reads like a textbook, and I found myself drifting off after reading a few pages because I just could not absurd the material.

All in all... interesting, but dry.

4.0 out of 5 stars All it needs is a better screen., December 4, 2014
Kocaso’s M9300 Android tablet is speedy and a good value, but the screen is a big letdown.

The Kocaso has a glass screen on the front, while the back is made of glossy black plastic. The plastic looks stylish, but feels cheap, especially compared to a high-end tablet, like the iPad. It feels well assembled, however, and nice in the hand. Included with the Kocaso are a charging cable (it does not charge over USB), a USB cable, headphones, a stylus pen (which is superfluous), and a fabric pouch for storage.

Performance wise the Kocaso is quite speedy. It opens apps, searches the web, plays games (Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds), and works with e-mail, quickly and smoothly. I didn’t feel like I had to wait for the Kocaso much. The screen is very responsive too, and reacts instantly to the touch.

Speaking of the screen, that’s the Kocaso’s weakest link. The size/resolution are fine, but the screen lacks saturation and contrast making everything seem washed out and bleak. Additionally it has a very narrow viewing angle.

The speakers are pretty good and put out nice volume, but the cameras are poor and take photos no better than those from an old cell phone camera.

Battery life is decent and I was able to get about 5 hours out of it before it needed to re-charge.

All in all… a good tablet in search of a better screen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smartly designed, and works really well., December 1, 2014
Only's mobile bed is a great solution for emergencies, or when you travel a lot and don't want a hotel room. Heck, it's even great if you want to take a nap in your car at lunch!

The bed is very nicely made from thick vinyl, with nicely finished seams and trim. It feels like a heavy duty pool toy. I noticed no leaking. Included with the bed are two small pillows and a pump. The pump works in your cigarette lighter and is surprisingly effective. It took only a few seconds to completely inflate the bed and pillows. Additionally three tips are provided with the pump to insert in the various valves on the bed. Speaking of the valves they are very nicely designed. There is an intermediary cap that allows you to add air without it coming back out. It's great for filling, so you don't have to rush and put the end cap on before it starts deflating.

The bed is an L-shape where part of it rests in the footwells, while the remainder covers the back seat. This arrangement gives you a lot more surface area for the bed, but you have to make sure your front seats are out of the way. I have a 2006 Acura TSX and I had to push my front seats forward most of the way to have room for the bed to fit. Width-wise, however, it was perfect. For a smaller car, you may need to inflate it less to get it to fit properly.

The bed is actually quite comfortable. The top is flocked with a fleece-like material, and you can adjust the firmness by adding/releasing air. It's much better than sleeping on top of a lumpy backseat with buckles digging into you. It's the perfect size for one person, or two people who are "good friends".

All in all... a great backseat bed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great features and build quality., November 28, 2014
Avantek's DF-660 electronic flash works great on my Canon 7D, has lots of features, and is pretty easy to use.

The Avantek is very nicely made. The plastics are all high quality and it feels solid and well assembled in the hand. It's also very professional and discreet looking. The one thing that lets the Avantek down, however, is the buttons. They feel a bit cheap. Included with the Avantek is a drawstring case and stand to hold the Avantek in the upright position when it's not on a camera. One thing to keep in mind is that the Avantek is large and heavy, so it adds considerably bulk to your camera.

The Avantek has lots of built-in features. There is a large and clear backlight screen on the back. The Avantek will work with Canon's E-TTL II flash system, and it will also work as a wireless slave flash using Canon's built-in wireless that can be found on some of its SLR models. The flash head pivots and swivels, and has a drop down wide-angle lens diffuser. Lastly, the flash moves back and forth internally to cover a range of 24-105mm, but you can use other focal lengths as well.

I've never used an external flash with my 7D before, so I was excited and a bit apprehensive. I was hoping that the included owner's manual would be helpful, but unfortunately it was poorly written and contained short explanations for the features and settings. I was able to figure out how to use it properly through a combination of trial-and-error and Google. It worked flawlessly with my Canon 7D, giving me much greater power and control over my flash. The pivoting head allowed me to do a bounce flash, and I was able to take advantage of the 7D's built in wireless flash control to use the Avantek off of the camera as well (although you must make sure that the Avantek's sensor has a clear view of the camera's built-in flash). When I used my 10-22mm lens, the built-in wide-angle diffuser worked nicely, and when I zoomed with my lens the flash reflected that. The flash recycles quickly when taking single shots, but when using continuous shooting it can only keep up for about 4 shots before it starts to weaken.

All in all... a modestly priced option for those looking to dabble with external flashes.

LED 12 Watt A19 General Purpose Household Light bulb, 5000K, 920 Lumens, E26 Medium Base (2 Pack)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bulbs., November 26, 2014
These LED bulbs are a wonderful replacement for fluorescent or tungsten bulbs.

The bulbs are nicely made with a sturdy base and a plastic top. They are about the same size and shape as a traditional 60-watt tungsten bulb. They are a bit heavier than a traditional tungsten bulb, but not so heavy that you should worry about your lamps becoming top heavy.

The bulbs turn on instantly and don’t have to warm up to reach full brightness. They give of even lighting and don’t hum. The bulb’s base gets moderately hot to the touch, while the top is just warm. The color of the light they give off is cool, and closer to a fluorescent bulb than tungsten.

All in all… a great choice in LED bulbs.
