5.0 out of 5 stars Makes late 16th century Rajasthan come to life, November 26, 2014
This hasn’t happened for a while but I found myself carrying this book everywhere: stealing spare reading moments at work, commuting, or when I knew I’d be somewhere waiting in a line.

The descriptions of physical and emotional space transport you to a breathtaking, but turbulent past; including the not-so-spiritual “arrangements” forced upon Indian temple dancers.

Especially for people interested in Rajasthan, this book makes the the 16th century come to life in a way that not even a walk though an old fort or temple can.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where to turn for a reliable drive?, September 7, 2013
I bought this from the Apple store in New Haven, CT.

It powered up and showed on the desktop of a new imac. However, trying to add any files/folders resulted in an error saying there was no space left. Multiple attempts failed to get the drive to work at all. This included: trying the drive on another computer (2011 MacBook Pro), downloading Lacie drivers, and using the Mac Disk Utility.

The disk utility could not partition, erase--or basically do anything to the drive. I returned the drive the next day.

I have been using Lacie drive for years and this is not the first dud. This type of failure rate seems common for these drives. (Personal drive failure rate is around 3 for 12 over the past few years--that's for the Lacie brand. Failure in this case means failing to work within 3 months.)

However, I'm not sure if Seagate (which now owns Lacie) or Western Digital are much better. Will probably try another brand for a change.

5.0 out of 5 stars great examples, April 5, 2009
This is a nice book in that in building the projects, the author throws in large and small "side" details--from how to structure re-usable vs. standalone applications to pluralizing model names when they appear in the admin.

For a busy developer, these tidbits are key. The book is nice complement to Holovaty's Django book. I'm looking forward to the updated book and the release of the code repository.

(As a side note, if you're a drupal developer, definitely give yourself a few hours with this book:)

5.0 out of 5 stars thank you!, December 19, 2007
As a programmer, every few years something comes along that makes you want to redo everything you've recently been working on--because it's easier, it makes sense, and it's actually fun.

Using Django for web development is the difference between using a rusty screwdriver or having five people with new Makita cordless drills.

Similar to the [...] site, the book is clearly written with excellent examples.

Although I'm glad the book is out, the selfish side of me wishes another year passed before more people were exposed to this framework. This sentiment is echoed by a friend who started a job at a cancer research center 6 months ago. Since his first project finished (done in Django), three departments have now dumped Java frameworks for Django. The productivity difference is incredible--and logical--no hidden "magic"

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic, September 3, 2007
I could not put this book down. It moves at Grisham pace but with more complex relationships/characters.

Having previously lived/worked in New Haven and the surrounding area, I especially appreciated the author's myriad of characters who showed many of the complex perspectives of the New Haven/Yale relationship.

If nothing else, this is a great mystery.

Thank you, sir!

2.0 out of 5 stars airport reader . . ., September 3, 2007
> Positives: nice glimpses of buddhism in different countries, well researched, taps into the desires to better understand the "big questions", held attention during a long plane ride

> Negatives: rarely goes into depth regarding the many strains of buddhism described, doesn't seem to leave reader with much at the end

> Big annoyance: 50+ year old white author's views on Asian women.

e.g. "I was becoming enamored with the beauty, charm, and mercurial quality of Chinese woman." . . .the same later happens with a Vietnamese woman. . . these parts were not needed and definitely turned me off (or would've rated book a bit higher).

For a buddhism related book, would recommend Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, January 13, 2003
Reading this book on a plane back from India, I admired the way the author was able to blend in the texture of the city and all the different forces at work: from people struggling for their daily existence to the enthusiastic engineers who built the plant .
From cursory knowledge of the incident, I always thought that Union Carbide skimped when building the plant--not installing adequate safety measures, etc. I also had read carbide literature which blames the accident on sabotage, tea breaks, and other nonsense.
Lapierre gives a balanced view and shows how the plant, which was initially closely monitored, was allowed to deteriorate in order to save costs.
What makes the book worth reading is the people--especially the heroism of people during the night of the tragedy, amazing. Definitely worth reading.
