4.0 out of 5 stars We need the Rappers to Rap...Please., June 24, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Born Sinner (Audio CD)
This album is a step up from his debut album, which had a change in his delivery and style that I felt wasn't perfected yet. I have been a fan since his mixtapes from The Come Up - The Warm Up - Friday Night Lights, and I was much more accepting of this album than Cole World: The Sideline Story which was a rougher product than this album Born Sinner.

My favorite songs from this album were: Villuminati, Forbidden Fruit, Ain't That Some S***(Interlude), Crooked Smile, and Is She Gon Pop. Also to me the two songs on this album I really don't like are Trouble and Runaway.

If you are looking for a good album filled with good lyrics and great production that is very much a Rap/Hip-Hop album then you should buy this album. There are too many Rap albums out there sounding too much like an electro-rock-rap accident/mistake.

The reason I have stuck with J. Cole is because when he puts out an album or mixtape he doesn't overstuff it with featured artist after featured artist, when you listen to his album you get to hear him and not his friends who also rap. On this album there is one song that has another artist rapping a verse called "New York Times" feat. Bas. The featured artists that do appear on the album are doing the hooks and choruses. This is not a Young Money or Maybach Music production featuring the whole label roster.

5.0 out of 5 stars this album is great if you already like daft punk, April 9, 2013

This review is from: Alive 2007 (Audio CD)
So a lot has been written about Alive 2007 and I think the main point that needs to be covered when discussing this album is that each song will contain crowd noise/reaction/cheers. Also this album is enjoyable to any person that enjoyed DJ mixes, but already being a fan of Daft punk will make listening to this album more enjoyable because you can compare the original songs to the remixes/mashups. I don't think this should be the first thing you listen if you've never listened to daft punk. But for me personally it is a near perfect electronica album and live album.

2.0 out of 5 stars Speaking is necessary, January 18, 2012
I went out to see this film with some family and friends, I went in knowing what kind of film it was and I thought I would like it. But I knew the people I was with only heard the word "Drive" and thought of action, heist, killing, etc. Normally I would enjoy films similar to this film that mixes drama and action in a sort of indie style or a style that most American audiences aren't used to. I watched the other film "Bronson" by this director after I watched "Drive". The director uses a lot of similar style and tricks, but that film was a character study and focused on their main character. "Drive" did not do the same. I will say that Drive is great to look at and and the sound was very good.

So as we watched the film it started off well and from then it declines very slowly, and when I mean slowly this is a result of the two main actors Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan having a lot of interaction with each other and nearly no back and forth dialogue. This doesn't mean that nothing is said, Carey responds like a normal person most of the time and then Ryan's answer would be to just look at her, stare, and then smile.

The only character I didn't like was Ryan Gosling's character because while the role may have required him to not speak as much, the movie shouldn't have tried to focus and draw out the relationship between two people that really don't communicate with each other. This is the biggest failure of the film is that when it is all said and done the film's focus is on the relationship between Ryan and Carey, with action becoming a part of the film at the end. The film at the one point changes tones so much that it leaves you confused.

I will say to each their own when it comes to most things, this film was only rated a 2 star because the surrounding cast of characters did well. It looked very good and was filmed well, I did enjoy the sort of 80's synth soundtrack because it seemed to take me out of the dramatic points the film tried to focus on.

I'll end with stating that if this movie had simply had some basic dialogue between the two main characters then it would've been passable and I would've actually been able to recommend it to people. But this is not the case, I am not the only person out there who felt that the lack of dialogue brings down the film. So when multiple people are pointing out the same issue in a movie that is critically praised like this film is, then it is up to the reader to decide which side they think they will fall on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its good, November 9, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I will in the review give my reasons as to why the 2nd season is very good and not worthless in terms of story like most people try to make it out to be. This first part will be a review of the 2nd seasons content and then a product review overall.

The 2nd season follows after the OVA's left off where Hei is now in a stupor as he searches for Yin who was kidnapped, he arrives in Russia working for the CIA where he is sent to capture a boy named Shion.

So the 2nd season of Darker than Black had a lot of hate given to it because of the confusion about what happened to Yin and Hei. Also many didn't like the introduction of a new character a young girl named Suou. This confusion was the result of many people not watching the OVA's between the 1st and 2nd season. This was critical because it explains what happened to Yin. Suou as a character was great or bad she was just along for the ride and this was meant to be because of event that happen in the story with the character Shion.

Another important aspect of where people get confused is the fact that Darker than Black is following the Izanami/Izanagi/Kagutsuchi legend, which helps to explain what the over arching ideas of the story are and how the names correspond to the characters. Most believe that Hei is Izanagi, Yin is definitely Izanami, and the result of their being together would be Kagutsuchi. The last few being speculation by most viewers, but this helps to clarify their story and why Yin is changing from a normal doll to something else

Okay on to the actual product review, this version was perfect for someone who already owns the 1st season if it comes in a single DVD case because the chipboard case leaves room for the 1st season so all of it can be held in one box. Of course the issue being with the set though is if you don't have the first season than you have to keep the placeholder that comes with the box or else you'll have an empty space, but likely if you're buying this product than you already have the 1st season. This box has some great artwork, as well as the Blu rays and DVD have artwork on them that each was distinct and very nice to look at. I checked the quality of the 2nd season on Blu-Ray which looked great and I checked the OVA's on DVD which looked even better than the 1st season. There was no production drop off or budget cuts for this series.

Overall i would give the box set a 5/5 for having a blu-ray and dvd combo, a great chipboard box, and great artwork. The OVA's are 4/5, and the 2nd season a 4/5 because while the show is highly enjoyable, the animation is great, there is the issue of not clarifying everyone's role throughout the series which would require re-watching the series once or twice to catch each important detail and make it clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catherine/Katherine...The Love of My Life, July 27, 2011
This review is from: Catherine - Xbox 360 (Video Game)
FYI: I purchased the Alternate cover version of the game but decided posting my review again here might be more useful to those looking into maybe buying this game.

As I am writing this review I am at about 5-6 hours of gameplay and past the 3rd stage. So almost halfway through, this review is to give those considering buying this game a sense of what it is like.

There are 3 difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, and Hard. I am playing through on Normal because the puzzles can be frustrating at times and I have died on Normal many times already.

The puzzle gameplay is the main focus of game when you are in the Nightmare stages which you have to push and pull blocks arranging them in a way so you can climb higher and get through to progress the love triangle between Vincent the main character we are in control of, Katherine his longtime girlfriend, and Catherine the mysterious blonde who works her way into Vincent's life. Each puzzle has a time limit which is imposed by either the lowest line of blocks falling off one after the other or a Boss that chases the player as they climb higher, although a Boss is only on the final level of each Stage.

After each Nightmare stage is completed you wake up to progress the story in the real world through text messages, conversations with your friends, and spending your nights drinking in the bar called Stray Sheep.

So far each Nightmare stage has two levels and a final level, each stage and level has had varying obstacles and traps to stop you from progressing and frustrate you as you try to solve each puzzle. But along with this frustration I always feel great satisfaction when I find the correct route and narrowly escape death. After beating a level you end up on in an area with other "sheep" who also have to climb to survive like Vincent, here they will give you tips on climbing and you can purchase different items to help you in the puzzles although you can only carry you item and picking a new item up replaces your current item.

In Stray Sheep there is a mini-puzzle game called Rapunzel which mirrors the game of Catherine except the character in that game is saving Rapunzel by climbing blocks to reach her long hair. In this mini game though you have a limited number of moves you can make, but you don't have blocks falling from under you and you don't have a time limit either.

Overall this game is for those seeking an actual challenge from a game and don't want to just be along for the ride while the game basically plays itself. I have played Portal and ilomilo, both of which are great puzzle games, but this game might be above those in terms of great story telling combined with great animation and incredible and difficult gameplay.

On a side note the alternate artwork looks great and I liked it more than the normal artwork cover shown online, my pre-order came with a bonus sound disc with songs from the game and a 20-page artbook which both are great, the music in the game is perfect for the nightmare tone using orchestral music like Chopin and Beethoven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, June 9, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had two simple purposes in mind when purchasing my External Hard Drive, simplicity and storage capacity. I needed to store a lot of movies that I've been ripping lately and encoding. So simply put a lot of data that I don't want to lose. This drive comes ready to use, I'm using a 2-year old MacBook Pro 13". I didn't try out an sort of back up software included, my purpose was achieved to have a hard drive that runs perfectly, doesn't get hot, doesn't have a loud hum, and works for both mac and pc when formatted in FAT. One thing to note is the blue light on the drive de-notes drive activity and is bright so this may annoy some but its not any worse then my xbox 360 light, or TV LED power light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Know What You're Getting, June 9, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First off it should be noted that these reviews are meant to be a product review on not quiet an opinion of the show itself. But it should be brought into consideration, that being said most of the issues others find with Hell Girl is the episodic nature of the show. The show has its formula of a disgruntled, abused, or angry person accessing Hell Link to get vengeance on the person that wronged them. We then watch their tale play out and eventually they are sent to Hell.

Those new to the show should know that the show doesn't have a true plot/point until the 8th episode, even this story is not delved into until the very end of the show. Just like people shouldn't look for Comedy in a Murder Mystery, people shouldn't expect anything beyond the self contained stories of each episode.

Onto the product itself, you get 4 DVD's in a single normal size DVD case using those hanging DVD holders. The artwork on the inside of the cover is very nice and I chose to flip the DVD cover inside out because I like the inner artwork more. The Dub is there of course and is very good, the episode "The Cracked Mask" is funny in english. We get a roundtable interview with the main Japanese Voice Acting Cast which is nice.

So if you understand the point of the show wanting to tell self contained stories then it is likely you will enjoy this show and for you a 4/5 rating is likely.
If you want a continuous story there are many shows with 100's of episodes out there to enjoy, so you'll likely be a 3/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sad and True, May 31, 2011
I recently watched this film after hearing a somewhat positive review from by favorite movie review site Spill.com. So I knew what I was getting into based on the synopsis provided. This is a film about a magician who is on his way out and his magic act is no longer appealing to a mass audience, after he meets a girl in Scotland who works in a pub and she becomes impressed by with magical talents which she feels are real.

The story goes on to show their relationship grow as a sort of father-daughter relationship, but this movie will not leave you feeling happy at the end. This is a realistic look at what happens when the magic disappears in a relationship, or similar to when we all realized our father isn't superman and they aren't perfect. This film will make you think about how far would you go to keep someone you love happy. Also to note the animation is incredible, I will likely re-watch it again soon just to look at the detail in each frame.

I have seen other reviews stating how they loved The Triplets of Belleville and then went on to make a comparison to this film because they where directed by the same person. I personally don't like this approach because this film should be judged on its own merits and not held to the notion that this film should be similar to The Triplets of Belleville.

I would rate this 4/5 because its makes me feel sad similar to how Grave of the Fireflies left you with a great story, great animation, but in the end you might be depressed. Also note that it says PG, But do not show this to a child because it is not a kids story

5.0 out of 5 stars Storytelling Improved, April 26, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you had a problem or just never cared for the comedy in the first two series then this series makes up for that with a more serious look at the fact that Kaname is in real danger and that is the reason Sousuke is there to protect her. Also reminds us that Sousuke is a human being who does care just doesn't know how to show it most of the time.

This release comes with some nice extras. The best being "A Relatively Leisurely Day in the Life of a Fleet Captain" OVA which has everything a fan could want, some fan service, everyone's favorite captain, and a closet otaku. Among the rest of the extras are location shooting/interviews while in Hong Kong.

This is only brought down by the fact that it could have and maybe should have been longer. Also leaves you wanting much more at the end, this worries me because its been 5 years and no news of another season has surfaced. Always keep hope though.
