The Brass Giant: A Chroniker City Story

I like Steam Punk ! I needed to say that before the rest of this review is submitted. And qualifies as good steam punk. It has clock work, steam powered things, cantilevered spring mechanisms and adequate character development. It is also very much a YA book, read that as a young YA book ... that said, it has some requisite characters, some very soft romance but a good idea for the overall plot.

A good read if you are a young YA, or not ...

What a terrific and fun read! This is an Urban Fantasy set in the alternate universe of Vancouver BC. While it does have a fixation and focus on Chocolate in virtually all its forms, that is part of the both the principal character and the story itself.

It is a circuitous and adult path the hero treads in this story and that seems to annoy some of the readers. That is the writers prerogative and it sets a stage I can't wait to return to and explore in her other offerings. Due to some huge over sight on my part, I have missed her previously but the writing, editing and proofing and finished product are well worth exploring.

And I will NOT even give away one spoiler!

You'll have to find out how the surfing grandma, ancient vampire and sexy werewolf work into the story all by your self. It's worth the fantasy.

I got this GEL battery for the smallest bike I own. I put about 8 to 10,000 miles on this 'city bike' every year for the past six years and the battery finally flattened out about a month ago. This is the first replacement battery I've needed and it fits perfectly and fires the bike up from below freezing to spring weather so far, I haven't had it over a summer yet but I can't imagine any problems with warmer weather. What I've done for years on all my other bikes (and I did it with this bike also) was to put it on a good charger and bring it up to optimal while it was off the bike. As arrived, the battery was at just over 13.6 volts. When I finished the charging, it reached 13.9. My attitude is you only have one chance to optimize a new battery, so I do it that way.

All in all, it's much lighter than the original and has all the power this little bike needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only Five Stars available!, February 23, 2016

Only five stars are available. Drat! This is the first rez fantasy I've ever read and I personally feel he got the People right. I've lived on various reservations all over the west and the pace and distrust of the People of the white man is the one palpable reality when it comes to Native populations. The negative energy from some totems is at first uncomfortable to experience then it becomes downright scary / weird.

The story line isn't exactly linear as the narrators change with almost every chapter. When it comes to changing the voices of the narrators, it gets a bit weaker as the verbiage is close to being identical. I understand than, but you have to take it into consideration, read the words, hear the speaker in your head - accept it. Dialogue is one of the really difficult things to deal with, especially when it comes to regional accents and verbiage.

That issue doesn't detract Follow the Crows from being a tour de force in a fantasy exploration. If you want something totally different from the normal ghost and boogeyman books which have generally become totally formulaic, Follow these Crows around for a bit. It is adult and there is some sadness and nastiness but I think it's worth the effort.

Simply delightful! This is a short novella type offering and if I have one modest complaint, It's too short. The pace is verging on furious, the principal character (Mika) at first seems to be an over extended, overworked, under payed pawn in the magical society she lives. And then ... the little Gargoyle appears and asks for help because Mika's magic smells nice.

Now that's a different take which I've never encountered in my years of trolling urban fantasies and stories of legends gone by. I sat up and raced through the rest of the story and am convinced it is one of the more unique visions of urban magic I've run into. Mika and her friend Kylie are compassionate neophytes in a city which has amazingly dark nooks and crannies. But the skill set of Mika is off the charts for what other Earth Elementals are capable of. Even the five star magicians who populate the city can't compare with her unique talents. There are battles fought, dark magic countered with pure skills, a few embarrassing news paper articles done by Kylie, endearing hatchlings and some really frightening black practitioners. The story has it all, I just needed to add a cup of coffee and I was satisfied.

Immensely

4.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous world building ..., October 31, 2015

World building at it's finest. The Mad Tinker collection is an exercise in memory for the reader with two or three different populations at odds with each other and intersecting worlds tenuously connected by the exertions of the Mad Tinker(s). This is a fun read which exercises your imagination and memory and offers interesting political and societal observations.

Because of the complexity of the plot lines, it isn't a particularly fast read but it is a worthwhile exercise in appreciating the writers craft. And it is above all, very well written. (I gave it four stars due to the complex nature of the story, It actually should have been 4.5 .)

This is a great read by a good story teller. The seemingly adolescent attitude Jade has to her mentor Paris is forgivable when I understood her as a 'deer in the headlights' type of character. She seems to be totally clueless of relationships unless they are in a video game type environment. She has acquaintences who would like to be friends but she is suspicious of their motives (they don't have any) and even of her own. That understood, the plot is rich but complex and actually enlightening.

That given, the story really requires reading the previous volumes to understand who and what Jade is; a complex but incomplete person, Jade both grows, withers and finally begins to thrive by the end of this marvelous story. As for Bruce, he has become an empathetic pocket dragon who assists and understands more than he can convey.

Thanks Margarita, a great read (Virtually no spoilers here, just an honest review ... )

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly conceived and executed - fun books., June 10, 2015

This is a fun read with at least four levels of interest. If you are into old technology and the commercialization of flight, this is your series. If you are into applied magic and human potential, this is your series. If you are into vintage bigotry and pushing cultural mores from 80 years ago, this is a great read.

While there were very few spelling or grammatical errors, most seem to be the type which had slid by the little automatons in the box which have a minimal sense of humour and a complete lack of understanding syntax. In essence, this is a very adult, complex story with some very damaged principles who are survivors of WWI. They are a neo nuclear family who celebrate both their existence and unique collection of strengths and even powers. And I'll leave it at that. There are a few twists and turns which are very different for these types of book. All three of the omnibus series have their unique and fun eye openers. Thanks to the authors. Many thanks to the authors ...

Fun read, actually a combination of 'high steam punk', a dystopian future, corporate greed and memorable characters. This is a very well written and edited edition which was compelling and thought provoking.

Matilda Case is a very strong, big farm girl with some unusual animals and companions. She is a leader of the Browns, which is the lowest of all the corporate guilds, who try to live off the grid and out of sight and mind of the powers which are the 'owners' of the world. On a normal day with her pet lizard full and happy, while the mysterious grandma continues to knit her over long scarf directly from the fleece of her pet sheep (part nano), a strange, wounded, giant of a man knocks on her front door.

And the clock starts ...

This is much more than a restaging Buchan's '39 Steps' or even Blade Runner, it's a well crafted, fun read with rich back stories and a dubious future. As such, I was delighted with the overall quality of the ideas and the implementation of very different realities and ideas. I look forward to exploring more of this series and other works of this remarkable writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange Compulsion !, February 26, 2015

This little vacuum flat out works! The advertising hype which usually accompanies something as mundane as this vacuum cleaner was ... true!

My old Hoover finally was making more noise and leaving more on the carpet than I could tolerate so, after shopping both ads at Carumbazon and especially the user ratings, I took the leap and sprung for the Shark Navigator and was totally surprised and delighted. It took all of five minutes to unpack and assemble the unit and after (literally) studying the owners manual and the one sheet directions was up and vacuuming. Both flat nap carpet and flat surfaces are a simple chore and when it came to doing the baseboards and trim, once I understood how the bleeder worked (about 5 seconds) everything did exactly what I wanted to accomplish.

I was virtually overwhelmed! Then, I woke up in the middle of the night with the strange compulsion to ... vacuum. I did it quietly to keep from annoying the neighbors and thoroughly cleaned my spare bedroom. and even touched up the main living room again. The method of dumping the surprising results of my work was simple and neat and the filters all looked in fine order.

It's a good little unit if you are in need of either a replacement or a new addition to your arsenal of cleaners. One suggestion - if you have a little canister vacuum (Dirt Devil, automotive vacuum etc.) it is really easy to touch up the multiple filters and clean them, before they get clogged. I do this about every third time I clean the canister. This should keep everything working for a longer time, and even reduce the need for replacing the filters. I don't know how long this will extend the life of these replaceables but ... it just takes a minute to do that and it can't hurt.
