4.0 out of 5 stars Works as well as the Cam Ranger for less money and better construction., April 22, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have been using the Cam Ranger for a while now and thought it has worked well, I have had one big complaint... it is cheaply made... the housing on the Cam Ranger feels like it will break with the slightest mishap. The XSories Weye Feye has the Cam Ranger beat hands down on that issue. The Weye Feye is housed in a strong plastic shell that feels much more substantial than the Cam Ranger, and it has a rubber-like cover that adds a little extra protection to the unit (I still wouldn't drop it from six feet onto a hard surface, but it is definitely better than the Cam Ranger). An added bonus is the Weye Feye comes with straps to attach it directly to your tripod.

As for functionality, The Weye Feye seems to work just well at controlling the camera (Nikon D800 & D810) as the Cam Ranger... frankly it is a toss up on this aspect of the units. You can control your camera's settings and fire the camera all while seeing what the camera sees while in Live View mode.

Bottomline... if you are considering a remote viewing and control unit for your DSLR, at 25% less the price, the Weye Feye is the way to go.

Disclaimer: I have only tested this on a couple of high end DSLR cameras, though I understand it works with most DSLR cameras, it does seem from what I've read to not work on all lower end DSLR cameras. Whether this is due to those being older models or just not compatible, I cannot say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, well executed., April 22, 2015

Great idea, well executed. The Charge It! PP-15 is the perfect device for your car. It is a battery pack that packs a lot of power. At 15000mAh, this device will charge any smart phone or ther battery powered device... a few times. And, it will also jump start your car! And, it has a flashlight too.

It is compact, comes with a nice case, and actually jump starts cars... I tested it helping out someone driving a Toyota Camry. I spend a lot of time in the back country so this device will be very handy for both battery emergencies and charging my phone after a couple of days off the grid.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother., April 10, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Why? I get the idea of keeping your batteries warmer in cold weather for a longer record time. I get that this case will provide a little bit of protection in extreme conditions (but, hey, the case is cheap and they give one with half the accessories). But, even if the claim of longer battery life is true, it can't be that much longer as this isn't exactly neoprene. And, worse of all, a longer battery isn't worth the effort, energy, and frustration of putting this case on and taking it off. To get the cover on, you have to stretch it over the GoPro THROUGH the lens opening... besides the pain of this, how long before it starts to tear at one of those corners.

Definitely a pass.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well done entry into Science Fiction for MaCammon., April 10, 2015
This review is from: The Border (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Robert McCammon's latest is a gritty science fiction story of an Earth overrun with two alien species that have made our planet a battlefield in their war, and humans are just collateral damage. The few pockets of humans struggle, day by day, to survive in this hell also filled with cannibalistic mutants. When there seems no hope, a boy named Ethan enters the picture with no memory of who he is or where he comes from.

Ethan falls in with one band of humans and we slowly learn his role in the survival of mankind.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Toast, bad for fresh bagels., April 10, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Yes, this toaster is fast as advertised. Sometimes too fast and definitely sometimes unevenly so. For toast and frozen waffles this toaster works very well. And, the slots are definitely nice and wide - wide enough for a fresh bakery bagel. BUT, the toaster is not deep enough for a nice fresh bakery bagel. The bagels from my bakery stick out of the top... probably about 15% of the bagel sticks out. This exasperated the issue that it cooked the bagel unevenly - the bottom burns before the upper part fully toasts (and the part sticking out doesn't toast at all). It appears designed for the bread isle bagels, but not for a good bakery bagel.

Overall the look is nice and crisp, but the unit feels a little flimsy even though it is made of stainless steel.

It works for making toast, but I will stick to my toaster oven for my bagels.

Leaving Before the Rains Come
Leaving Before the Rains Come

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Alexandra Fuller, April 3, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have been a fan of Alexandra Fuller from her first book, "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight". For me, "Leaving Before the Rains Come" ties all her previous memoirs together in a fulfilling telling of how her life married to an American and moving to the U.S. changed her very way of being in the world, and how when it started to fall apart it gave her and even greater perspective of where she has come from. Almost like she got a second chance to write the first book when older and wiser and a bit more worldly.

Though I would always recommend starting with her first memoir and working forward, "Leaving Before the Rains Come" would also be a good place to become acquainted with Alexandra Fuller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neal Stephenson's best work yet..., April 3, 2015
This review is from: Seveneves: A Novel (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Neal Stephenson's best work yet! Seveneves tells the story of the destruction of Earth and the effort to return to it 5,000 years later by the seven distinct races descended from the humans that fled their dying planet. With a deft combination of good storytelling, well developed characters, and some good old fashion science, Stephenson paints the picture of what would happen to us if the moon were destroyed and our very survival depended on humanity working together to solve the problems of colonizing space.

Well paced with some great action sequences, I had a hard time putting Seveneves down ... the dishes piled up while I was reading this book!

Mother of Eden (Dark Eden)
Mother of Eden (Dark Eden)
by Chris Beckett
Edition: Paperback
Price: $11.36

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel, March 23, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Mother of Eden is a worthy sequel to Dark Eden, the story of colonists to a light-less planet. Set a few generations into the future, Mother of Eden chronicles a planet now settled by the colonists that split into two separate factions. Like Dark Eden, Beckett takes the broad view of the new civilizations exposing the grand picture of human nature and human struggles. I look forward to where he takes this world next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Multi-generational study of human nature on the first interstellar voyage., March 15, 2015
This review is from: Aurora (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Though not up to the level of the Mars Trilogy, "Aurora" is still a good book and an interesting direction for Kim Stanley Robinson. Earth's first interstellar mission, Aurora, carries more than 2,000 colonists on a multi-generational voyage to an earth-like moon orbiting a gas giant in Tau Ceti. With multiple narrators - from an intelligent quantum computer to a young child - Aurora spends much of its time examining human nature on such a voyage. But, don't worry, KSR definitely includes some hard science as well (though I could wished for more).

And, of course, things don't go as planned once they reach their new home.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well made, but reveals a limitation in the GoPro., February 28, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
At first glance, this seems like the perfect solution to a day of doing just about anything. But, there is an important limitation in the GoPro camera system itself... you cannot plug the USB into the GoPro while it is in one of its cases. So, if the weather is bad or you might take a tumble in the snow or surf, then you run the risk of ruining the camera.

This is not a defect in this product as some suggest, just a limitation with the GoPro as I mentioned. I cannot know the maker for this, but I would suggest them design a case that solves this problem.

Beyond this, I really like the overall design and quality of the PolarPro PowerPole. It is well built, has strong battery life, and has proven useful for some extra extension (over a cliff, not for selfies).
