Stiletto: A Novel (The Rook Files)
Stiletto: A Novel (The Rook Files)

Edition: Hardcover
Price: $16.42

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost-worthy successor to The Rook, June 17, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Stiletto but I did not like it as much as The Rook. For me, The Rook was the perfect fantasy novel - I loved the world-within-our-world of the Checquy and I adored Myfanwy (rhymes with Tiffany) Thomas. I thought that the two heroines of Stiletto were far less compelling than Myfanwy and that the author seemed to be struggling to be clever.
If you loved The Rook you'll like Stiletto.
If you have not read The Rook, read it! It is perfect. I think I'll go read it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Seinfield goes to the Arctic, April 20, 2015

This review is from: Fram (Paperback)
I really, really disliked this novel. I am very interested in novels and memoirs about Arctic and Antarctic exploration so you'd think I would have liked Fram, but this is a sort of post-modern version. I think it is meant to be deeply and brilliantly ironic but instead it was just sort of trite. I felt sorry for the central character but he also felt sorry for himself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dullsville, April 20, 2015

Ann Packer is a fine writer but this is an uninteresting novel. I never cared about the characters. IMHO if you are reading a novel about characters you don't care about and you are hoping you'll finish soon so you can read something "better" than the novel hasn't done its job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 10 of 2015, March 26, 2015

This review is from: A Little Life: A Novel (Hardcover)
Why aren't more people reading this novel? It is different than The Goldfinch or The Signature of All Things, but it is an equally fine work. And it is a superior novel to The Interestings, or at least I thought so. The structure (following a group of friends through their lives) is similar but the characters of A Little Life are murkier and the storyline is more compelling. This is a novel in which it is true to say that the "action" flows from the characters. My only criticism of the novel is that the victimization of the central character is too extreme.
I hope that this excellent, well-written and intriguing novel will find a larger audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars So not "Marley and Me", March 14, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: H Is for Hawk (Hardcover)
A moving and beautifully written slice-of-life from a troubled woman, this book is about Macdonald's training of a hawk at a time of emotional distress. There is a lot to like in this book, but only if you are interested in birds/animals and the dead English author T.H. White. Macdonald's hawk, Mabel, is central to the book but since she is a hawk it is much more difficult to embrace/comprehend her than it would be (for instance) a dog. She is a wild thing. Macdonald tries to get into Mabel's head but despite being completely besotted with the bird, Mabel remains a glorious cipher. The book is given more heft by the frequent digressions to T.H. White, who was also a falconer and also a writer and also troubled, and these passages are either interesting (if you care) or completely irritating (if you don't). Macdonald's prose is strong and vivid, and she has won a slew of literary prizes for this work.

Great series! Good writing, good acting, lots of twists and turns. The only thing this series doesn't have is special effects.

1.0 out of 5 stars I think a 12 year-old would enjoy it, so maybe that's the target audience, March 14, 2015

This series is so derivative it is offensive to the reader's intelligence. I think a 12 year-old would enjoy it, so maybe that's the target audience. But I've read and enjoyed a lot of YA novels. Mr. Brown is making lots of money from his trilogy, which I've read has already been optioned for the movies, so that's great for him. Just don't waste your time reading these dumbed-down "Hunger Games goes to Dune" novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars These flannel-lined jeans are fantastic for cold weather, March 14, 2015

These flannel-lined jeans are fantastic for cold weather. Their fit is good, not great - the waist is a bit loose so you might be tugging them up from time to time. But they are SO much warmer than regular jeans and if you are sitting outside at a soccer game you will be cozy and warm. The flannel lining is soft.
