4.0 out of 5 stars Best Clock, but Poorly Priced, March 4, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We run a large computer network and have relied on four of these at various workstations for the last four years to set reminders for non-standard tasks. It just works better to use these analog devices than our computers for certain alarms. For a decade we relied on almost identical clocks sold by Radio Shack. When those were no longer available, we bought five or six different small alarm clocks; after testing them we chose this as the best. We fix them in place with a strip of velcro on the base.

The colorful face and hands are very easy to read and attractive. The alarm is easy to set accurately. None of the clocks have failed even after a few drops. Time is accurately kept by the quartz movement. Battery life is roughly a year on one AA.

I use another one of these in my bedroom and like the easy-to-find light/snooze button on the face. The hour and minute hands glow in the dark. I must concentrate to faintly hear the movement with the clock three feet from my head. The on/off bar conveniently shows an orange bar when "on" and can be quickly found all by itself in its top location. Alarm beep starts gently and increases in intensity.

The $18 price is awful, or I would gladly give five stars. Similar clocks are half the price; but we will buy this one if we need another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Bowl Prep - Offenses and Defenses, 1930 - 2010, February 1, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For the typical NFL fan this is a very good course in football offensive and defemsive schemes. All are taught with an intersting historical perspective naming coaches, teams, and players who developed and executed each scheme. The wrtier is a sportscaster and sportswriter with decades of experience.

I bought one for myself and one for each of my two adult kids to prepare for the Super Bowl.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Spice Mix, Disappointing, February 1, 2012
I tried Carroll Shelby's Chili Kit earlier this week, and it was excellent. I tried this one tonight using the same cuts of meat and was very disappointed. This one was peppery enough but seemed to lack cumin and garlic. Firey, but bland - thin tasting, not rich.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outrageous, No CD, No Battery, No USB, January 31, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This item arrived today. It was missing the installation CD and had no USB connector.
Not only that, it was constructed entirely of granite and had none of today's modern plastics.

One would expect that at least the pestle would be electronic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough to Beat, Hide the Box & Guests Think You Are a Genius, January 30, 2012
With ingedients in four packets, make it hot or not as you wish. Start with the recipe on the box. Nothing extra except meat and tomoato sauce is needed.

I used two parts sirloin and one part trimmed center-cut pork chops cut into 1/4" cubes instead of ground beef. I reduced the quantity of this lean mix to 1.5 lbs from 2 lbs. I also sauteed with the meat 3/4 cup onion and 3/4 cup mixed Anaheim and Jalapeno chopped peppers.

Thicken with a roux made from the included Masa flour (corn flour) or not depending on your taste. The result can be not only geat chili but also great taco filling, enchilada sauce, or nacho topping. Note that Tex-Mex chili (chili con carne) traditionally has no beans; but do as you like of course. I make half with beans and half without and let my guests choose.

Robb Walsh's "Tex-Mex Cookbook" got me going on Tex-Mex food. It's a beautiful book filled with the history of this regional cooking and lots of great recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Printed, An Illustrated History With Photos And Recipes, January 28, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of those special cookbooks that are worth reading even if you do not intend to frequently cook from the recipes. There is far more space devoted to the illustrated history of Tex-Mex cooking than to the recipes themselves. Your guests will enjoy what you cook; and you will have stories to serve up with the food.

The author is the restaurant critic for the Houston Press and a noted food writer.

This book makes a great gift. Even friends who usually do not enjoy the kitchen will want to rush out for a tortilla press and some Masa (corn flour) for fun in the kitchen.

Tex-Mex perhaps is becoming our nation's best gift to the culinary world. A note to politicans: read this before campaigning in Texas; and be careful, Tex-Mex can be even hotter than primary politics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better FM Receiver than Expensive Sangean and Crosley Radios, January 21, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This small unit makes a good, compact, and inexpensvie FM radio and digital media player. A rechargeable battery is included. External power is from a USB connector to any external powered USB slot.

I recently purchased a Sangean WR-11 ($80). a Crosley Solo CR221 ($74), and an August MB300($28). This $16 unit with a fake wood enclosure was the smallest and not as handsome as the others, which have real wooden cabinets; but its FM tuner was better than the other three. My primary use is for FM at my desk; so the expensive units are on the shelf, and this one is in use.

Use for FM or playing digital media through built-in memory and flash slots or connect to your iThing with the included cable. There are four small speakers; and sound volume and quality are adequate for a personal music device.

Mine came in an unmarked box with no instructions. Perhaps you will need the assistance of a thumb-texting, media-crazy seventh-grader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Analog Wood Cabinet Design, January 10, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love radios.

This is one of the most beautiful radios under $200! The wooden cabinet and analog dial and controls could hardly be done better.

BUT, my first tests of the FM tuner are at best B+. Sound quality is no better. More later.

Later -

I am going to keep this radio because of the attractive retro design. I compared this radio's FM reception for WNYC (93.9) to three others with all sitting side-by-side. Here are the results:

1. (Best) Panasonic RC-CD500 2001 (about $52, no longer available)
2. Sangean HDR-1 $165 2008
3. Cambridge Soundworks 2005 (about $175)
4. Sangean WR-11 2012 (THIS RADIO)
5. Crosley Audiophile 2012

Sound quality of #4 and #5 was well below that of #1, #2, and #3.

Tuners on all but #4 and #5 are digital. Analog tuning is nicely retro but inferior.

It is disappointing that a ten-year-old system (that includes a CD-player) beats the latest models.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Poor FM Tuner, January 10, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My Panasonic RC-CD500 purchased for $52.00 in 2000 vastly outperforms the tuner in this Crosley with the two units side-by-side. Both units are using the attached antennas that came with the units. The Panasonic also has superior sound. The Panasonic model is no longer available except for occasional units on Ebay.

I compared this radio to four others that I own and it was the worst in reception and sound quality.

There batteries seem to work just as well as those that came with my Olympus camera. Appearance is identical to the Olympus batteries.
