5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive quality of manufacture and a nice bit of decoration on the job, September 27, 2014
Review written by Kim Menke, edited by Charles Ashbacher

Well, I have to admit, I'm pretty impressed by the Titanium Anionic Anti Fatigue Navy Blue Silicone Rubber Bracelet with Silver Accents and Silver Magnetic Clasp Negative Ion.

While I'm not prepared to swear by its anti fatigue claim, I am absolutely pleased with the quality of manufacture. I got through my entire day of work - with the bulk of it being shelving in the children's section of the bookstore - without the bracelet coming loose. Considering the watches I've gone through in this job - a plastic Shrek one from a box of Cheerios held up the longest - this bracelet takes the prize.

It's a nice bit of decoration to wear in a job where I rarely wear any - due to fear of things getting brushed off - and I'll be wearing it regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Descriptive, detailed sketches that could be used as examples in an art class, September 27, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a collection of sketches split into groups where each is based on a theme. Each theme context was taken from illustration projects that Blue Monkey Studio worked on.
The first theme is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth where all the humans destroyed each other and the little people (fairies) now populate the Earth. The main characters are called the Pumpkin Family and images of them, their house and dwelling are given. Marketplaces have been set up on roundabouts and the Pumpkin Family operates one of them where they sell goods that they have collected. The best image of this group is the two-page one of their roundabout; it takes some time for the viewer to go through it section by section in order to grasp all of the details. One of the best features of the image is the appearance of a house key, giving the viewer an idea of the size of the fairy people.
The detail of all of the sketches is impressive throughout the entire book. The people all have five fingers on their hands, their eyes and faces are very expressive and their clothing has folds and wrinkles. My favorite theme is "Mars", where some of the characters of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books about Barsoom are sketched. Many people consider Burroughs to have been a writer of modest talent, but his accounts of the adventures of John Carter of Mars and the creatures he encounters there are the product of a very fertile imagination. I read many of them when I was young and there was a great deal of mental imagery of the strange creatures on Barsoom. Many science fiction writers have also cited the Barsoom books by Burroughs as their inspiration to begin writing.
The images of the creatures of Barsoom in this book can serve as inspiration for future artists as well. My favorite image in the book is ten-legged lion, all of the legs are synchronized and the musculature of all the legs is realistic.
This book can serve as a textbook of examples for an art class on how to sketch many different things, from people to monsters to people interacting with monsters.

The bags are large, with dimensions almost thirteen inches long, five inches wide and eighteen inches deep. The handles are made from sturdy rope with knots in the end. The designs are very attractive and the material is very sturdy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly durable as I banged it around a lot when I was learning to fly it, September 26, 2014
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
I do not have a great deal of manual dexterity so it was a good thing that this helicopter is pretty sturdy. My first step in working with it was to do some simple takeoffs and landings. Takeoff was easy but my first landings were complete crash landings that were so hard that the helicopter bounced off the ground. After a quick visual check for damage, I re-set it in place and tried again. Another inadvertent test proved that the slowly rotating blade is not dangerous, as I had it strike me once while it was in "idle." There was no damage to me or the helicopter.
After my first misfires I moved upward to being able to execute controlled crash landings where the landing gear was the first part to hit the ground. I considered this a dramatic improvement, both in my skill level and the useful life the the helicopter.
It took me hours of practice, but I was eventually able to modestly control the helicopter in flight, although never to the point where I would be brave enough to fly it in enclosed spaces. Given my lack of fine coordination, the fact that I acquired this skill means that almost anyone can learn to fly it.
Since about an hour was the limit of my endurance in working with the helicopter and I plugged it into the charger after each session, I never tested the limits of the charge in the helicopter battery. Replacements for the main blades and the tail rotor are also included.
Two negative points to make, the first is that it is advertised as being for ages fourteen and up. In my opinion that is very conservative, children younger than fourteen can learn to fly it as long as they are closely watched until they reach a threshold level of skill. The second is that the user's manual is of very little help. Most of what I learned beyond where the power switches are in developing my skill level was trial and error, a lot of error. In some ways I am surprised that the helicopter is still capable of flight.

5.0 out of 5 stars It has a nice look that will dress up everything from business casual to Sunday best, September 26, 2014
Review written by Kim Menke, edited by Charles Ashbacher

It's really lightweight, which is nice.

Since it doesn't have a clasp, I was worried it would fall off, but I just tightened it to about 3/4 of an inch opening - since it's adjustable - and have been wearing it around today with no problems. It's held up while I've been doing housework, so I'm sure it could handle any activity - from dinner to dancing.

It's a nice look, either to dress up a simple office work outfit or to complement a dressier "Sunday best" outfit. And the gift bag adds a touch of class, especially if you're planning to give it as a gift. Just add a bow and your wrapping is done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful when you have more clothes than hangers when traveling, September 26, 2014
When completely folded, these hangers are five inches long, slightly less than three inches wide and less than a half-inch thick. They fit easily into my shoes. This makes it very easy to pack them into a small nook of a bag or suitcase. They fold out to a length of slightly more than fifteen inches with hooks for straps three inches from each end. The hook for placement on the rack is one-and-a-half inches in diameter; this will make it a bit difficult to place the hanger on a thicker clothes rod.
While I didn't put a great deal of force on the hangers to determine when they will break, I did put enough force on them to learn that they do have a limit. I put my heavy winter coat with many pockets (my winter man-purse) on one of them and it bent but did not break. That coat is so heavy that cannot be put on hard plastic or wire hangers because it will damage or destroy them. Therefore, this hanger is at least as sturdy as they are.
Designed for the traveler that may find themselves short of hangers for their good clothes, this product is small when folded, light in weight and sturdy enough to hold clothing of normal weight. All of these characteristics make it easy to use and possibly an essential element of your travel ensemble.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid addition to my jewelry box, September 26, 2014
Review written by Caytie Ribble, edited by Charles Ashbacher

The infinity necklace is quite lovely, it's not overly complicated and it's not gaudy so it won't attract unnecessary attention to itself. The clasp hooks and unhooks smoothly, so I can easily put it on by myself. The simplicity of the design and the color means I can wear it with just about anything. I am happy to add it to my jewelry box.

Throw the Long Bomb!
Throw the Long Bomb!
by Jack Laflin
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A realistic look inside pro football, September 26, 2014
This review is from: Throw the Long Bomb! (Hardcover)
This sports fiction book follows the first NFL season of rookie quarterback Ronnie Baxter. He was a first round draft choice of the New York Giants and received a signing bonus. However, the Giants have two veteran and proven quarterbacks, so Ronnie is uncertain as to whether he will even make the team. He finds training camp to be physically and emotionally exhausting, the plays are much more complicated and the players are all bigger, stronger and faster than he faced in college.
Ronnie's strongest characteristic is his humility in the face of his prior success, he understands that his role is to provide sideline support for the offense and hold for placekicks. The Giants did very poorly the previous two seasons and are not expected to do very well this season as well.
As the season progresses and the Giants do well Ronnie learns more and more about being a quarterback in the NFL and the more subtle aspects of taking advantage of how the defense is reacting. When injuries and off the field incidents take place, Ronnie is suddenly thrust into the spotlight as the Giants are challenging for the title.
This book is largely focused on the life of a rookie quarterback in the NFL and the challenges they face from the start of training camp to the end of the season. There are some dramatic moments where Ronnie does something great but he also fails on a regular basis, all part of the learning process. Those features make this a good book, for spectacular sports heroes are few and they only get to that point after making and learning from their mistakes. This is a fact that is universal, going far beyond sports and one that young people need to learn.

4.0 out of 5 stars I would hesitate to read this book to very young children, September 25, 2014
This book, written for children at about the third grade level, is interesting. Felix Clousseau is a painter that enters his "simple" painting of a duck into the Grand Contest of Art in Paris, France. The judges deride his painting until it utters a genuine "Quack" in their presence. Stunned at Clousseau's unexpected talent, the painting is awarded the Grand prize.
It turns out that Clousseau's paintings have unusual properties, parts of them come alive, which creates problems when the object is dangerous. The negative consequences of his paintings lead to his arrest and imprisonment until the positive actions of one of his paintings. Clousseau is released and the last page describes an interesting self-referential loop.
While this book will entertain minds that know that paintings cannot come alive, the young child may be unnerved by the thought. There were times when I was easily frightened as a child and I can remember being unnerved by images that were large. Therefore, I would be hesitant to read this book to the very young.

Aesop's Fables Illustrated by John Hejduk
Aesop's Fables Illustrated by John Hejduk
by Aesop
Edition: Hardcover
17 used & new from $14.64

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly timeless set of principles for life, still valid almost three thousand years after they were written, September 25, 2014
There are moral codes written into religions and countless books on philosophy and ethics. These treatises are often convoluted, complex and uncertain. However, most of the best lessons of how to live your life are found in Aesop's Fables. Using a simple contextual example, Aesop was able to encapsulate important principles that all readers can understand.
In this book the fables are accompanied by images created by John Hejduk. The images are somewhat abstract, living creatures are drawn with exaggerated characteristics, for example the ears of a hare are proportionally much longer than they really are. A fox has a tail that is as wide as the body. The coloration was kept deliberately bland, there are no bright colors or contrasts.
It is universally believed that Aesop was a slave and storyteller that lived around 600 BC in Greece. Unlike many of the other stories that have survived from that time period, these fables are just as applicable today as they were almost 3,000 years ago. As long as humans do not change, these stories will remain valid descriptors of how to live your life.
