5.0 out of 5 stars This Scanner is Great!, January 11, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's amazing how all the detail and then some in 35mm slides and negatives is captured in this scanner's 22-megapixel resolution! The scanner's resolution is default-set to the lower 14-megapixel resolution, so if you want the max 22, every time you turn the scanner's power on, you have to manually set the resolution to 22 before you begin scanning, a minor inconvenience. I guess Magnasonic figured the average consumer would favor lower-resolution scans in the interest of saving memory card or hard-drive space.

Slides fared better than negatives in transfer quality, particularly in black level, but that's because the black level in my negatives from 30 years and before faded, whereas the slides still have images that look pretty good. Never fear: If you have Adobe Photoshop or a similar image-manipulation program, you can restore much of that black level and color quality, as well as paint out dust and scratches if you're really feeling ambitious.

The scanner has rudimentary controls for color-balance and brightness correction of images built-in, in rather large increments, so make a best guess in scanner and then be prepared to do some additional tweaking of the images in Photoshop or another image-manipulation program to get the images as gorgeous as you remember them. I prefer to scan the images a bit on the dark side and then brighten them up in Photoshop, versus scanning the images too bright. Watch those highlights! Once they're gone, blown out white, they're GONE!

I tried using this scanner to scan Super 8 movie film and, at much lower 6-megapixel resolution, with horrendous grain, it's basically useless for scanning such small film. For larger film up to 135mm, if your film is in good shape, the images are stunning!

I've been saving my images to an SD card, then inserting that SD card via SD card reader into the USB slot in my computer, and it's been great--the computer simply recognizes the scanned images as from any other digital device, at which point you can simply upload them to your computer's hard drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Terror and Adventure!, January 11, 2016
This is the complete, masterful score that rightly earned John Williams his first of many well-deserved Oscars for Best Original Score. Those opening DAA-DUM low bass-viol notes CONTINUE to scare generations of swimmers out of the water! John then infuses this terrifying shark theme into "pirate music" when Quint, Brody and Hooper are aboard the Orca chasing the shark, making the movie a fun sea-faring adventure as well as a thriller!

This 2015 release includes all the music from the 2000 Decca release, plus several new unused cues (who knew John Williams even wrote a searing high-violin screech for when Chief Brody typed the words "SHARK ATTACK" as "cause of death" via typewriter on the coroner's report!), and alternate versions of several pieces on disc 1. One of these pieces is called "Wild Shark Theme", just the chopping low bass notes, which was designed to be placed anywhere in the film, and WAS used in the ending section of "The Pier Incident" as the shark is bearing down on poor Charlie, who can't get out of the water!

For purists and afficionados, the 1975 "Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack" version of the score plus even several incidental band pieces that were playing on Amity Beach on 4th of July is on disc 2! This makes this as complete a soundtrack of Jaws as complete can get!

5.0 out of 5 stars Majestic and Profoundly Moving, January 11, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
John Williams has written another masterpiece that has contributed to this film being so epic and spiritually beautiful. Three new pieces in particular had me singing them and moved me to tears: A great new action motif when the story kicks into high gear and our characters really have to hustle, the beautiful and haunting theme for Rey, a warrior with hidden talents, as she begins to discover and use the Force, and the majestically desperate theme for the Resistance. There is also a dark, declamatory motif for the First Order and Kylo Ren, with deep baritones for Supreme Leader Snoke, as well as the familiar Han & Leia love theme, Leia's theme, the Force theme, bursts of the main Star Wars and Rebel fanfare when something heroic happens or when we see a familiar icon like the Millenium Falcon. In typical Williams fashion, new themes and melodies are interwoven into existing material as the narrative of the film calls for it, to create something new while also vaguely familiar, reminiscent of what came before, from delicate to majestic. Bravo in another fine achievement in film scoring, Maestro Williams!

5.0 out of 5 stars KATADIN!!!, October 23, 2015
This review is from: Prophecy (1979) (DVD)
This is a damn scary movie with a strong environmental message and a big, mutated beastie, an amalgum of all creatures found in nature, that is truly hideous. Its muscles, sinews and puss on the outside of its body! It's also ravenous, not to mention pissed off (wouldn't you be, if you were born disfigured like that?). This really merits a high-definition transfer and release on blu-ray!

Hearing the FULL version of Jerry Goldsmith's score to Apes, it becomes obvious what a staggering achievement in film music this is! I particularly love Track 7-The Hunt, which contains the "reveal bugle call" for the first time we see the apes riding horseback. Exciting!

This disc even contains a medley from Goldsmith's Escape from the Planet of the Apes, which contains all the themes heard in that film in a trendy '70s funk sound. Amazing!

This review is from: Innerspace [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Innerspace was long overdue for a blu-ray high-definition transfer, especially since Dennis Muren and the wizards at ILM won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for this film in 1988, and it delivers! The picture is gorgeous, with every particle inside "Martin Short's Interiors" super-sharp, and great lattitude between highlights and shadows!

The extras are the same as the DVD, the theatrical trailer and an entertaining commentary by director Joe Dante, producer Michael Finnell and visual-effects supervisor Dennis Muren. It cracked me up hearing Dennis trying to get in his "the fat cells are jello" comments between the others' comments during a visual-effects shot that lasted 5 seconds!

This powerfully primordial music terrifyingly scores director Steven Spielberg's hit TV movie about a travelling salesman (Dennis Weaver) murderously pursued by an unseen driver in a bug-spattered, oil-belching semi-truck! Spielberg and composer Billy Goldenberg were INSANE, DEEPLY DISTURBED!

The stereophonic sound quality is fantastic, worthy of anything else Douglass Fake at Intrada Records has painstakingly remastered! I can't believe this music came from a 1971 TV movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Fans of Trek and Great Film Music!, July 23, 2015

This outstanding release of James Horner's legendary score is made all the more prescient and omniciently powerful due to his recent tragic death.

This is the score that really burst Horner into the mainstream in 1982, and his creativity, imagination, guts, raw power and ethereal beauty are all in it!

I didn't think it was possible to improve on the legendary music Jerry Goldsmith composed for the original Star Trek-The Motion Picture, but Horner does just that! His music is even more exciting, even more suspenseful, even more passionate, even more deeply meaningful! The bagpipes of "Amazing Grace" that accompanied Spock's funeral in the film have finally been reinstated in this soundtrack release, and they are clearly responsible for the heart-breaking nature of this scene.

This music lays the groundwork, the template, the blueprint for all of Horner's superb scores to follow!

4.0 out of 5 stars Timerider on blu-ray: ALMOST Perfect!, July 20, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The quality of the cinematography really shines through clearly in this blu-ray version of the 1982 cult classic. Plus, the original ending (spoiler alert), of bad guy Porter Reese's boots with bloody meat hanging off them when he is ground up by the tail rotor of the helicopter has been restored! There is even a new making-of documentary which really gets inside of the heads of Timerider's screwball creators, producer and co-writer Michael Nesmith of the Monkees and co-writer and director William Dear. The only thing that keeps this from being a perfect 5-star review is: Where's the surround sound? The sound, listed on the case as DTS-HD Master Audio stereo, seems to be completely lacking a rear channel(s) and is firmly anchored in the front speakers. This is a little disappointing, considering that, in addition to Michael Nesmith (who also composed the music)'s great rock 'n roll score, there were exciting surround effects in all previous releases of this film including the excellent Anchor Bay DVD, enhanced by the Aphex Aural Exciter process, like the ambience inside "Dr. Sam"'s laboratory and when one of the race cars zooms into the rear channels during a night scene when Jessie is trying to get Swann on the radio in the Baja 1000. (sign) Can't have it all I guess. I'll be holding onto my DVD for this reason when I want to be blown away by the sound. Otherwise, great release!

It is made all the more poignant for me because my beloved brother departed this earth not too long ago and I wonder if he "visits" me from time to time...

Spielberg's superb craft and technique is all in evidence here. He delivers wit, genuine pathos and irony, not only in the actors' deft delivery of dialogue, as would be the case with other, lesser directors, but in the VISUAL, his virtuosity with the camera, with light and with tricks in the editing (cutting on Audrey Hepburn's removal of the towel she is using to catch Richard Dreyfuss' hair during her giving him a haircut from the smoldering woods to a golden field, "Time is funny stuff" is pure magic). THIS IS CINEMA!

The blu-ray has superb color and contrast. As with the release of American Graffiti and other Universal blu-rays, it appears a bit edge-enhanced and de-grained, but this is a minor nuisance in an otherwise gorgeous transfer. Bravo!
