2.0 out of 5 stars It had to be the belief that it had to get better. It didn't, October 19, 2014

Space Opera - The author weaved the insecurities of the characters into all the actions of the novel. The science and the mission were ignored by earth personnel and explorers on MARS. Space Opera! Space Opera! Space Opera! Why did I finish reading. It had to be the belief that it had to get better. It didn't!

The Sodium series is a well written exploration of a dynamic plot. I have enjoyed these stories and marveled at the depth of story. The early books were somewhat difficult to read because the author did not seem to bring nature and aliens into a possible situation. After the story went into space it became more fluid and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outside Looking In, July 29, 2014

This is an intelligent and powerful narrative. It is a powerful display of character development. The female protagonist goes through a metamorphosis as she becomes the advocate for alien spaceship. I was not happy with her lack faith in the male members of the crew, but the story still works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Swarm intelligence, July 19, 2014

Not to my liking. Swarm mentality is like city hall. You know things are being reported and worked upon, but why should you care. Before one can feel the unity of the swarm, the experience of single characters is lost. Magic has no point.

This is the first of a series and it has the makings of enjoyable read. The main character and his analytical alien sidekick are used to view a list of other military and space opera characters. It is not boring.

Ep.#11 - "Born of the Ashes" (The Frontiers Saga)

5.0 out of 5 stars Continued Excellence, May 27, 2014

Ep#11 is another winner. This author has continued to show writing maturity as each novel follows the tale of Nathan and the Aurora. This was a transitional and developing story line opening up the story line to a wide range of possibilities. The author has the ability to blend the characters' personal story lines without overshadowing the plot or allowing military terminology or strategies from taking the reader to junior OCS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, May 17, 2014

This series held together. In many series Sci. Fi. machines and/or hardware control the action of the characters, but in this book the plot moves forward because of actions of the characters.

Few readings demand introspection and a desperate attempt to divine yourself in relation to a fictional environment. Mr. Howey is an author of such power that you must muse on your existential face. This is not to say that your "answer" or a sense "belonging" is ever suggested. This is a post modern look at social, financial, ethical and familial bonds. Well worth your time, but you may have to step back from moment to moment actions to see the horizon. Read carefully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Military SciFi, January 27, 2014

Many military based science fiction novels are unbalanced in their approach to the emotional maturity of characters. Often military actions are seen as not needing emotions beyond the execution of a battle plan. This series does present the protagonist as a more complete individual. But this series also contains AI characters who are asked to work with humans. The AI personalities are a difficult challenge for the author and are left flat, gung-ho and adolescent. Enjoyed, but could have moved into several more sophisticated directions
