Fantastic Chalk Box
, February 14, 2012
As a saw cutter I rely on a chalk line for the vast majority of my concrete cutting. I've used just about every chalk box I've seen sold. Thus far, this one is the best.
The reel system is sturdy and very smooth.
The line-lock is easy to use and feels sturdy enough to last.
The hook at the end is large enough to use when wearing gloves.
The end hook 'stay' is phenominal. Can rattle around in my tool pail or tool belt with little risk of the line unspooling.
The line is hardly bold (which is fine for me since after the chalk is sprayed with line-saver it tends to get a bit bolder), and doesn't seem to hold much chalk. I need to roll the line up and shake after every snap. Could be that the line just needs some more time to break in, but doing layouts can get a bit tedious. I'd say the line before sprayed with clear spray paint is around 3/32"; about half what most of the Stanley and Irwin boxes snap.
In conclusion, I'll never buy a different brand of chalk box. I'm going to order a few more to use different chalk colors. Maybe give a few out to some of my other cutters.
Regarding the chalk, 'water-resistant' uhm... no. Perhaps 'humidity resistant', though it performs no different than any other brand of chalk I've used in the past.
