4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, I didn't think I would enjoy this one, March 22, 2014
This review is from: Divergent [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I didn't plan on seeing this film until I bought both Hunger Games steelbooks that came with two free passes. I was not expecting much at all due to the reviews, but I'm happy to report that Divergent is way better than the critics are saying. It's not quite up to The Hunger Games, but it also strays far away from the awful Twilight franchise, which I was initially afraid it would end up being. The story is interesting and the cast is pretty good, especially Shailene Woodley as Jennifer Lawrence lite. I have a feeling the sequels will be even better since this is really just a long, yet engaging setup.

4.0 out of 5 stars I dream of Eva Green, March 8, 2014
Not nearly as memorable as 300 and if it were not for Eva Green, 300: Rise of an Empire would be a 3 star effort at best. She is comes off as both sexy and scary, being that she is an evil warrior woman you don't dare mess with. There is an empty void where Gerard Butler's presence is missed. He has done a bunch of awful movies since 300 I know, but he was pretty good in the role of Leonidas. Overall, it is much of the same in terms of visuals and bloody action.

While far from spectacular, It's not boring in the least and I liked the fact that it is a prequel/companion piece/sequel all rolled into one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matthew McConaughey unleashed, February 19, 2014
This review is from: True Detective [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This is an absorbing and dark crime drama on HBO that only lasts 8 episodes and will have a new cast and story next season. The writing is second to none and every supporting cast member, both small and large roles, fits just right. We all know by now that McConaughey can really act. After years and years of his talents being wasted, recent films like Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club have put him on a career track that few actors ever experience. His work here on True Detective is in my mind the best thing he has ever done. Just hand him the awards and get it over with. Woody Harrelson plays a great foil to his very dark view of the world and the chemistry between the two is outstanding. The beyond beautiful Alexandra Daddario has a brief but "revealing" role. Sorry, just had to throw that in there. Game of Thrones is my favorite show, but now HBO has a real contender to fill that Breaking Bad void in my life.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Dragon to Rule Them All, December 15, 2013
I know that many people are split on the first Hobbit film, but I for one really enjoyed it. The Desolation of Smaug suffers from being the middle child and thus having no beginning or end, but it moves at a pretty good pace for being a little on the bloated side. All the acting, sets, music and action are top notch. Some of the FX are hit and miss, but the dragon Smaug is an absolute wonder in both look and sound (voiced by a deep and menacing Benedict Cumberbatch). Martin Freeman remains likeable as Bilbo and the addition of Orlando Bloom (back as Legolas) and Evangeline Lilly as a beautiful Elvish warrior makes for some entertaining fight scenes. It does end on a major cliffhanger as expected, but it felt like it was done to make sure people turn up this time next year for the third and final chapter. I could have easily ended a few minutes later after concluding this part of the story and using the next film to lead into The Lord of the Rings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't laugh at Carrie!, October 21, 2013
This review is from: Carrie (2013) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This version of Carrie is a modern take on the 1976 version, based on Stephen King's first novel. It adds a few new elements and the cast is quite good, but it is another remake that does not need to exist. We all know what is going to happen and it is nearly a copy in structure. Chloe Grace Moretz has the acting ability to almost make me forget that she is too pretty for the role. The prom scene lacked the impact of the original, but overall it was still enjoyable and better than most of the new takes on classic horror films. Worth at least one look.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not just a movie, it's an experience, October 5, 2013
Gravity is a pretty easy movie to sum up. Beautiful visuals thanks to 100% convincing CGI, great acting and a musical score that adds so much to what you are seeing. There is not too much of a story other than survival in space, though some character development emerges as the movie goes along. Sandra Bullock delivers a performance that should get her another Oscar nomination. Her acting here is very natural and believable. George Clooney is likeable and a perfect contrast to Bullock's uptight and nervous character. I expect to see Gravity up for multiple awards (Picture, Director, Actress, Visuals Effects and numerous other technical ones). Sure it is more of a thrill ride than a structured movie, but it is unlike any movie I've ever seen, especially in IMAX 3-D.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, Riddick is Back, September 7, 2013
Almost on the same level as Pitch Black and a huge return to form after The Chronicles of Riddick. Vin Diesel in his best role delivers memorable lines and lethal kills. The CGI is very good and the movie has a good build up and payoff. The ending could have been better than the quick one chosen, but Riddick is a worthy action/sci-fi/horror hybrid that reminds us why Vin Diesel was a star to watch after 2000's Pitch Black.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jim Carrey the bada**, August 24, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If the first Kick-Ass movie was your kind of thing, Kick-Ass 2 more than delivers. The first film was more unique and original, but this one gives you even more laughs and great performances by Chloe Grace Moretz and Jim Carrey.

Hit-Girl still rules and it was fun seeing a much larger cast of good and bad characters. Carrey is not in the movie for very long, but he sheds his goofy facial expressions for a realistic and believable tough guy role. He should do more stuff like this. McLovin is much better here this time around and goes from Red Mist to the supervillain with a name I can't repeat here. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is once again good as Kick-Ass, but he spends most of the time (like the first movie) just getting beat up.

The violence is a little extreme, but I was expecting more given that Jim Carrey is now against the film due to this fact. Yes it has flaws, but it is a fun ride that had me smiling throughout. Oh, stay after the end credits for a short but important scene.

4.0 out of 5 stars Home is where the heart is, August 23, 2013
This review is from: You're Next (DVD)
A family gets together after many years and everyone begins arguing at dinner when all hell breaks loose from some outside intruders. That is pretty much the simple setup.

While You're Next is far from original, it does many things right. You care about some of the characters a little more than the average slasher film and the female lead is really smart for a change. Finally an intelligent and tough person to root for instead of yelling at them for doing every idiotic thing in the book. Plenty of gore, solid thrills and even a decent twist or two makes this horror film an enjoyable if somewhat familiar take on home invasion terror.

It's also worth mentioning that this film was suppose to be released years ago after much buzz, but something happened with the studios and they shelved it until now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brandon Lee and what could have been, August 9, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Crow [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I didn't really appreciate The Crow until I saw it again as an adult. It is now part of my Blu-ray collection and ranks among my favorite graphic novel adaptations. Great acting by Brandon Lee (don't think it would have worked without him) and gothic visuals. Such a promising start to a career that was sadly cut short due to a freak accident during filming.
