Hollywood: A Third Memoir
Hollywood: A Third Memoir
by Larry McMurtry
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $9.60
30 used & new from $0.01

3.0 out of 5 stars Slight book, March 27, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Like McMurtry's other memoirs, this is a small book. I prefer his fiction over his memoirs but they do give you some idea of the man behind his work. However, it is not necessary to read as this is the least interesting of his memoirs. I suspect that McMurtry's real life is mostly interior, inside his head, so reading the memoirs does not tell you very much about him. Having said that, I enjoyed this, and his other memoirs, " Books" and "Literary Life" because together they do give you a sense of what his life has been and his indivual world view. So it's best if you read all 3 to get the most value.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Grateful Dead album?, March 27, 2015

One of the best albums by Grateful Dead, perhaps their best ever. Don't pass it by if you want to see the very best the band led by Jerry Garcia has to offer. It demands a few listenings first up but this is an album that you will always want to listen to. A true classic that defies its own time

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated singer and songwriter, March 27, 2015

Fantastic album by former Byrds member, Gene Clark, reissued with additional takes of some songs. This album and the "White Light" album are Clark's best showing both his songwriting and his singing to best advantage.

4.0 out of 5 stars A profile not a biography, March 27, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Crazy Horse: A Life (Paperback)
A welcome addition to the little history we have on the formidable Crazy Horse. McMurtry has reviewed some of the major sources and written a profile rather than a biography because he also explains how scanty our knowledge of Crazy Horse is and why that is the case.

Honey West: The Complete Series (Fullscreen B&W)
Honey West: The Complete Series (Fullscreen B&W)

3.0 out of 5 stars Time for a little TV history., February 19, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is pretty dated but that is what makes it interesting to watch now. Plus I always had a little crush on Anne Francis from Forbidden Planet so it was nice that she got her own TV show. The show is very early 60s so it is historically interesting though not as innovative as The Avengers, the British TV show with Diana Rigg.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Psycho, but worth a look!, February 19, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am enjoying this show about the young Norman Bates and his mother. But don't expect anything Hitchcockian about it because there is only one Hitchcock and no-one will ever match him. However, this is an admirable effort to capture something from the original film upon which the series is based as well as being a very fun ride with lots of murder and intrigue. Definitely worth considering!

2.0 out of 5 stars The truth about Billy the Kid is still to come!, February 19, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Young Guns (Special Edition) (DVD)
This film was a huge success with young moviegoers when it first came out but except for giving work to some young talents, it maintains some wrongheaded myths about Billy The Kid that I would love to see corrected. Someone one day will do a picture or series on Billy The Kid that will better portray him as the victim of forces beyond his control. That story is not told here and is still waiting to be told.

3.0 out of 5 stars Season 7 is a mess!, February 19, 2015

This review is from: Rawhide: Season 7 - Volume 1 (DVD)
Season 7 seemed to have its troubles with some of the old shows from earlier seasons rearing their head here. By Season 8 Eric Fleming as Favor is gone and Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates is finally the trail boss but Season 7 hardly helped with this transition and halfway through Season 8, the show folded. A real pity because Eastwood was more than up for the task.

3.0 out of 5 stars LEWIS....AND FOX, February 19, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was disappointed in the first of the 3 new stories because it contained a serious and actually ridiculous ballistics flaw that just did not stand up to examination but was expected to be accepted without question by the viewer. However the remaining stories redeemed this season. Fox is now the DI and Lewis is retired but comes back to help out. I am not sure why the writers have done this but I assume the series will begin afresh soon as FOX rather than LEWIS as I can see no other reason for such artifice. Unfortunately, ENDEAVOUR, the series about the young Morse is a better series all around but I suppose there is still room for Lewis and Fox too.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this first season, February 19, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I loved this first season. It was so scary and so off the wall. del Toro does great work and has a real talent for taking what is essentially pulp fiction and making a lot more of it. If you like horror, this is a new dimension. I will look forward to Season 2.
