5.0 out of 5 stars As Perfect As Can Be!, July 25, 2010
I first heard this Oistrakh/Szell version of Brahms' violin concerto when I was a student in England. I had to save money to go and buy the LP in the 1970's when it was first released; I was totally mesmerized by it. What celestial playing!

This CD is just as beautiful. I have several CDs of the Brahms violin concerto and I would rate this as the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good example of the beauty of Rachmaninov's music, July 18, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had not heard of Semyon Bychkov before I got to see & hear this DVD- In particular, Rachmaninov's symphony # 2. While Tchaikovsky's symphonies tend to be greatly melodic- all of them, Rachmanov's tend to be hugely 'emotional'. I just loved this DVD, Semyon Bychkov brings forth the complete emotional content in each of the movements and the WDR Symphony Orchestra plays it marvelously well.

My strong recommendation for a 'Must Buy' & 'Must See & Hear'.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Conductor, May 9, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this DVD just to check out this young conductor- Gustavo Dudamel- and it turned out to be one of the best choices that I ever made.

What an outstanding conductor and this youth orchestra brings out the best of Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. Its amazing that this young team bring in so much passion to music.

USTAD AMIR KHAN VOCAL
USTAD AMIR KHAN VOCAL

5.0 out of 5 stars A Divine Musician, April 4, 2010
This review is from: USTAD AMIR KHAN VOCAL (Audio CD)
Pick up any of his records- Darbari Kanada, Marwa, Miyan ki Malahar, Lalit, Malkauns or any of the others. You will not find a single classical artist that will match him; the interpretation he brings in to a 'Raga' or the feeling with which he sings, leaves me spell bound all the time.
Ustad Amir Khan was a divine musician; it was God's voice that he brought onto this earth.
May his soul rest in peace!

Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book!, September 20, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Brenda Maddox has written a fascinating biography about Rosalind Franklin. Its quite sad that this lady who figured out the double helix structure of the DNA did not get the recognition that she deserved. And she died at such an young age.

Thanks, Brenda for bringing this lady to the forefront. Has the British government given Rosalind a national recognition? Even now its not too late for the world to recognize her for all the work that she put in.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best there is!, July 30, 2009
What can be better than this one by Svitoslav Richter? I have many versions of this album that I have bought over the years, but its Richter that makes me emotional. Absolutely brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars On Carlos Kleiber, November 12, 2008
Who would deny that Carlos Kleiber was a musical genius? I first heard Kleiber's rendition of C.M. Weber's "Der Freischuetz" when I was a student in England. Even today, the music sounds so fresh! Every time I listen to it, there is something new that I find.
This CD is worth its weight in gold & thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliantly Written Travelogue!, October 14, 2008
Ajit Harisinghani's style of writing takes you along with him on his travels. It's as if India is right before your eyes; the people, the villages, the rivers & mountains, the flora & fauna- infact, you can 'smell' every thing. And therein lies its beauty! Ajit has that rare talent which very few writers have- to capture in 'words', exactly what your eyes see.
Its a fun book & I would strongly urge everyone to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its Touching!, July 10, 2005
Is this the best version of Mozart's last piano concerto? This is Gilels at his best and he provides an incredibly touching picture of Mozart's last days. Every admirer of Emil Gilels needs to add this to his/her collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his usual self, June 6, 2005
This is definitely not on par with his Tchaikovsky's 5th played with the same orchestra (which was truly outstanding). Mariss Jansons and the Oslo Philharmonic is dificult to beat.
