5.0 out of 5 stars Route 66 expert Jim Hinckley guides a memorable trip down 66, April 11, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Jim Hinckley’s Travel Route 66 is a winner from the cover that displays Route 66 icons to the handy index in the back. It is a nice size for armchair reading or to toss in the car for road trips. Organized state-by-state starting with Illinois, it can be read straight through or you can dip in to find what are the most tempting topics to you. It has detailed descriptions to guide the Route 66 traveler along the road. The book is colorful and well illustrated with bright photos. Its attractive layout makes it easy on the eyes. Hinckley does a good job chronicling the people, places, and the activities of the Mother Road and makes sure that you don’t miss the highpoints or hidden gems along the road. It’s definitely worth the price of admission for this trip down 66 whether you are preparing for a road trip or have a fascination with this aspect of American Culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars 111 pound rescue dog says "Paw UP", February 26, 2013

Our dog had another sturdy ball that he liked, but it kept rolling under the furniture. This ball that wobbles didn't roll under the furniture and has held up to the large dog's chewing. He likes it and so do we.

Cutequeen Spider Red License Plate Frame Bolts Screws Metal(Pack of 4)
Cutequeen Spider Red License Plate Frame Bolts Screws Metal(Pack of 4)

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong bolt screws graphic sent, February 20, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
They were suppose to be bolt screws with a spider on them. The adhesive graphics were not the correct design. They were not a spider at all and looked nothing like the photo. Since they were to be used with other spider graphics, they will do us no good.

So this product is pretty much useless to us unless we receive the correct spider graphic to go on the bolt.

We will be glad to re-evaluate the product once we receive the correct spider graphic.

It is April 5th, and we still have not received our replacement order.

It is now May 6th, and we still haven't received this product.

Lowcountry Bribe: A Carolina Slade Mystery
Lowcountry Bribe: A Carolina Slade Mystery

5.0 out of 5 stars Low Country Bribe delivers with high drama., March 11, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
With bad-guy pork farmers, a devious husband, a handsome investigator, callous kidnappings, and treacherous co-workers, Low Country Bribe delivers a roller coaster ride of action, suspense, danger, and unfolding narrative. In her first novel, C. Hope Clark maintains a fast pace with memorable characters that lead to a climactic ending. This is Clark's first in what will be a Carolina Slade series.

Since Clark worked for the USDA and met her investigator husband on a bribe investigation, her details are authentic, and I look forward to her next installation in the series.

The Wagon Wheel Motel on Route 66
The Wagon Wheel Motel on Route 66
by Riva Jane Echols
Edition: Paperback
Price: $13.84
29 used & new from $11.18

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wagon Wheel Motel: An Authentic American Experience, July 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Wagon Wheel Motel on Route 66 mixes Route 66 history with the history of the oldest motel on Route 66 for an authentic look at one of the Road's icons. Not only are the changes of the Wagon Wheel over its 75 year history chronicled, but it also features information about its builder and designer Leo Friesenhan. The colorful owners and staff of the Wagon Wheel also make an appearance in the book to provide personal histories of the motel, cafe, and garage buidlings.

Riva Echols is particularly suited to write about the Wagon Wheel Motel and Cafe because her sister Connie purchased the Route 66 Historic Landmark in 2009 and beautifully restored it with style and reverence for its past.

Many photos and details about the buildings' architecture give a real glimpse into the Route 66 roadside motels of the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new Route 66 Resource..., June 20, 2011
The first thing that I noticed when I first flipped through Ghost Towns was the attractive layout. It makes you want to go deeper into the book. Writer Jim Hinckley and photographer Kerrick James and their layout team have done an excellent job of melding content and visuals. The current and vintage photographs provide a good addition to Hinckley's writing on the current and historical aspects of Route 66.

The book is organized with chapters on each of the eight Route 66 states in geographical order. Ghost towns were created by road changes, economic woes, and, as in Times Beach, Mo, environmental issues. Although the book focuses on what is no more along the route, there are also glimpses of life and renewal. In his writing, Hinckley pays homage to earlier books about locations on Route 66, so the reader gets a good overview of other Route 66 writing and resources. I am sure that readers familiar with certain areas will think one area should have been covered and another area not covered, but, overall, Hinckley's research provides a good panorama of the road that was.

Things that I liked:
*Great photos and integration with text
*When You Go boxes throughout the book that give directional information
*Don't Miss shield graphics that describe just that
*Bits of local history that enrich the reader's knowledge of Route 66
*Suggestions for further reading at the end of the book
*A nice index

Overall, I find the book a good combination of history and visuals for the reader that should create interest in Route 66.

Fireflies in December
Fireflies in December
Price: $5.38

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminds me of To Kill A Mockingbird but has plenty of originality, December 5, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Fireflies in December is a coming of age novel that will satisfy adults. While it has plenty of originality, it did remind me of Harper Lee's classic in some aspects, such as the question of race, a trial, a "Miss Maudie" type character, an impetuous protagonist, and an honorable dad. It deals with first love, friendship, racial tensions, the Klan, faith, and the ins and outs of a small Southern town. The suspenseful aspects of the book will keep you guessing as the young protagonist tries to make sense of a confusing adult world. I look forward to reading more from this author.
