5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and original, January 30, 2014
I've never read anything like Indigo Roth's book - and I mean that in the best possible way. Prepare to lose yourself in a delightful, imaginative tale that includes, among other unexpected things, "a multitude of badgers." Like sippin' whiskey, this is a book to be savored...and which will leave you with a smile in the corner of your mouth.

1.0 out of 5 stars Argh. It's a $200 doorstop., March 14, 2013

I, too, wish I had listened to the naysayers before buying this "grinder." It seems to have two settings (when it's not jammed and inoperable, that is): "coarse" (which churns out coffee flakes the size of cow pies) and "fine" (which creates a microscopic moon dust that defies the capabilities of even the most expensive espresso maker and yields coffee bitter enough to make your toenails fall off).

In order to produce either of these fantastic results, expect to spend some serious time disassembling, cleaning, brushing, whacking, cussing and, ultimately, glaring angrily at the machine...each and every time you want to use it. Of course, you might also want to try lighting an aromatherapy candle, calling your priest friend over for spiritual support and stroking the machine lightly while telling it how pretty it is. Seriously, we've tried everything, but this machine is useless.

Bottom line: you'll have a much easier time - and probably spend less - if you hire a moody supermodel to make your coffee for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed our little (s)Talk, January 6, 2013
To Suzy Soro, Hollywood is one big mixer, and she's determined to work the room whether it likes it or not. For those of us who assume Angelie Jolie does not want to hear about our dental work while grocery shopping, Suzy's approach to celebrity is a revelation. Cataloging her catch-and-release encounters with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, Celebrity sTalker gives readers a hilarious and subversive view of life in the real Tinsel Town from a comedian who has lived it both inside...and out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original and fun, October 16, 2012
Filled with colorful character vignettes, Molly Campbell's CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF A NOVEL is a fun, unexpected read. Based on the Twitter account of the same name, Molly has compiled her most popular character creations into a single volume and brought them to life with sharp, funny illustrations. The result is a "family" of folks whose passions, quirks, and occasional misadventures will keep you turning the pages - just to see what Molly has dreamed up next.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir)
Let's Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir)
by Jenny Lawson
Edition: Hardcover
168 used & new from $1.92

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely entertaining and original, September 11, 2012
The only thing better than a writer who is relentlessly hilarious is one who is also relentlessly authentic. Jenny Lawson's one-of-a-kind voice takes readers through a series of experiences that, well, only she could have had. (I say this as the usually law-abiding person she persuaded to "create a distraction" while she stuck a Bloggess sticker on the rear bumper of the Weinermobile. What can I say? She has that effect on people.) In typical, spectacular Jenny Lawson fashion, LET'S PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED will leave you simultaneously spent, electrified, and panting for more.

Speed of Dark
Speed of Dark
Price: $6.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and atmospheric, November 3, 2011
This review is from: Speed of Dark (Kindle Edition)
I very much enjoyed Ms. Quinn's SPEED OF DARK. I found her handling of the story to be engaging and original and her characters came to life for me. On a personal note, I grew up in an area of the country that also had those pesticide trucks rolling through the neighborhood at dusk (hard to imagine in today's times!) so the conjuring of a character from those mists really resonated for me as a reader. Regardless of where you grew up, I can enthusiastically recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, October 15, 2011
This review is from: Wanted: Cat (Paperback)
As a devoted fan of Marinka's hilarious parenting blog ("Motherhood in NYC"), I was hoping that her online voice would be echoed here - and I wasn't disappointed. WANTED: CAT is a sweet story about one family's acquisition of a beloved pet, but Marinka's sly, tart humor keeps it fun, real and never saccharine. A lovely and entertaining read for parents considering the addition of a furry friend to their household...as well as children looking for ways to coerce their parents into taking the pet plunge.

I'm Kind of a Big Deal: And Other Delusions of Adequacy

5.0 out of 5 stars A personal, entertaining slice of L.A. life, July 29, 2011
I very much enjoyed Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's collection of essays.

One of the things I love about Los Angeles is that it's possible to have many different consecutive lives here; it's truly a city of reinvention. Although not every essay is set in L.A., I think Ms. Wilder-Taylor nonetheless captures that spirit through the lens of her misadventures on the way to finding her place in Los Angeles...and in life.

Laced with the bittersweet realities of family dynamics and personal challenges, Ms. Wilder-Taylor's essays plot the comic arc of a woman who, sometimes without even knowing it, steadily gains a sense of herself while seemingly falling into one lousy job after another. For anyone who has done time in temp hell, entertained notions of being a full-time video vixen, or anything in between - I'M KIND OF A BIG DEAL will have you laughing, nodding and (keeping with the California theme) "relating" to the author and her quest.

Dangerous Neighbors
Dangerous Neighbors
by Beth Kephart
Edition: Hardcover
58 used & new from $0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars A complex, intense gem of a book, October 2, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dangerous Neighbors (Hardcover)
As the general plot of DANGEROUS NEIGHBORS has been nicely summarized by several reviewers already, I won't include another recap here.

Rather, I would just like to comment on the fact that I don't believe there's another YA author out there today who's writing books with the deft emotional touch that Ms. Kephart possesses.

One of the things I love about Ms. Kephart's books is that the main character is not the most colorful person in the room, nor the most boisterous. In other words - it's not the person one might expect. Her main characters may be shy, frightened or even damaged in some way, but that's where the storytelling begins. As Ms. Kephart reveals her characters through her lush and, at times, emotionally raw style, the reader is taken on an intimate and highly satisfying journey into the workings of an individual that, no matter the circumstances, illuminates aspects of human nature that resonate with all of us.

DANGEROUS NEIGHBORS provides the ideal counterpoint to many of the more trendy books at the opposite end of the YA spectrum by skillfully examining the timeless, emotional bonds that link us all through both pain and love.

The Heart Is Not a Size
The Heart Is Not a Size
by Beth Kephart
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $14.70
68 used & new from $0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and beautifully written, April 4, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Once again, Beth Kephart has delivered a young-adult novel that sings to adult readers of all ages. Gorgeously written and impeccably rooted in place and time, THE HEART IS NOT A SIZE takes readers on a journey through an impoverished Mexican village and the emotional terrain of the young women whose lives are permanently touched by their time spent there.

As always, Ms. Kephart's deft touch brings emotional darkness into light and places the reader directly into both the psychological and physical truth of the story.

This is a story that resonates on many levels, not only for the timeliness of the Mexican village setting - the subject of current worldwide media attention - but also the timelessness of the struggle with eating disorders that plagues women (and men) of all ages.

THE HEART IS NOT A SIZE is a novel to read and savor...and share with someone you love.
