5.0 out of 5 stars a joy to read, March 16, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bending Destiny (Kindle Edition)
An infectious novel of community, extraordinary individuals, and life choices – and it’s a joy to read! If you like Jane Austen, I think you’ll find Anne Barclay Morgan’s ‘Bending Destiny’ easy to love – but the action takes place in the (North American) present, it’s very much a book for today, and comparisons don’t do it justice. Just let the book and its characters work their magic on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful historical novel and a great read, September 11, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Arauco: A Novel (Kindle Edition)
From the first pages of 'Arauco' on, you're in the hands of master story-teller John Caviglia as he brings to life the quintessential culture clash: Spanish conquistadors (male and female) vs the indigenous Mapuche in the 16th-century region we now call Chile. The worlds bridged by this extraordinary novel seem at first utterly irreconcilable as a magical, shamanic culture (with its own *language*, of course, with which the reader becomes more and more familiar) is invaded by outsiders in search of gold and glory. But nothing is ever quite what it seems. Let 'Arauco' surprise you, let it enchant you, heal you, and more. For 'Arauco' is also a story of love.... Highly recommended to those in search of the best in fiction.

Les crimes de l'amour. (French Edition)
Les crimes de l'amour. (French Edition)

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware: yet another recycled (and very incomplete) Gutenberg.org clone, August 21, 2011
This edition (ebook with ASIN B005IAPZMA) is *not* Sade's collection of 11 stories as published in 1800, nor is it the familiar selection of five of those stories as found in the Livre de Poche edition (pictured here): it is instead an 1881 Belgian edition (already digitized by Gutenberg.org and available free at that site and elsewhere) of ***a single one*** of those 11 stories ('Juliette et Raunai, ou la conspiration d'Amboise'), accompanied by a few essays (including Sade's 'Idée sur les romans'); the title 'Les crimes de l'amour' is misleading, but it's carried over from Gutenberg. If you want this curious edition at all, get it for free as Les crimes de l'amour Précédé d'un avant-propos, suivi des idées sur les romans, de l'auteur des crimes de l'amour à Villeterque, d'une notice bio-bibliographique ... à la section des piques. (French Edition).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal, August 8, 2011

All the facts, every step of the method--and not one wasted sentence. Thank you, Jon F. Merz, for the ultimate how-to-promote, how-to-sell book, perfect for the indie author. I knew I needed Twitter if I wanted to promote my work, but it wasn't until I found Jon Merz's excellent guide that I learned exactly how to do it without giving my life over to it. Kudos to the guide that really fills the bill--it works!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindle users beware of false attribution to Garnett, November 1, 2010
This review is from: War and Peace (Kindle Edition)
We're all waiting for a chance to buy the Constance Garnett translation of 'War and Peace' as an ebook; ASIN B0046ZS35E War and Peace isn't it. Always check the *sample* before trusting what the publisher has entered on the Amazon product page for the ebook. Garnett's W&P begins '"Well, Prince, Genoa and Lucca are now no more than...."'

3.0 out of 5 stars back to drawing board?, February 16, 2009
This review is from: The New Yorker (Kindle Edition)
others have noted the incompleteness of the Kindle 'New Yorker' where cartoons are concerned; today I received the Kindle 'New Yorker' for 23 February 2009 and it lacks the Italo Calvino story that appears in the print edition--what gives? I'd love to read the *complete* editorial content of the magazine each week on my Kindle--but there are obviously still some kinks to be ironed out

1.0 out of 5 stars LeClue22 for Kindle--bad formatting, March 4, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review refers only to the formatting of the LeClue22 edition for Kindle (B0013QUKIW). It appears to have been prepared from a text file containing a hard return at the end of every line. When the publisher fails to remove the excess hard returns, the text doesn't wrap properly: every other line on the Kindle screen is a half line. Although LeClue22's price is currently the lowest for this work (which is in the public domain in the US), I wish I'd known about the formatting shortcomings. For a better edition, try EbooksLib (B000FC2OWK), at least until LeClue22 gets its act together.

5.0 out of 5 stars strongly recommended to fans of Garnett's translations, December 30, 2006
X. Zhang makes valuable points, but let me file what may be a minority report. Granted, the paper on which this edition is printed appears to be disappointingly pulpy--we'll have to see how it ages. But its 1920s typeface and layout are very generous and easy on these ageing eyes of mine. It's unfortunate that the publisher has not yet made any pages from the books available through Amazon's 'search inside this book' feature.... Readers considering the Modern Library volumes, which I used to own and which can now be hard to find, should keep in mind that that edition is a reduced selection, whereas the Ecco set includes all of the stories translated by Garnett; an advantage of the ML edition, though, is that it's generally organised chronologically (following the order in which Chekhov composed the stories), whereas the Ecco reproduces the organisation of Garnett's original volumes of translation. For me, all things considered, the Ecco edition is probably the one purchase in 2006 that's given me the most pleasure. But it may not be right choice for others....

1.0 out of 5 stars point of information - German title, April 27, 2006
if seeking the German DVD release of this film at amazon.de, search under the German title 'Sch?ner Gigolo, armer Gigolo'. That DVD, which has different timings from the Australian release, offers both the German-language and the English-language versions of the film. Of course, it's region 2, meaning that customers in the US and Canada will need a multi-region DVD player to view it.
