2.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, May 17, 2004
This review is from: The Trip (DVD)
I don't want to give the impression that this was a bad movie, because it wasn't. I do, however, want to say that I do not think that it is deserving of all the praise it has recieved. The character development was rather poor, and the plot was threadbare, but it did provide some enjoyment. It was light, and full of laughter, and obviously did not take itself too serriously. I would recomend renting or watching this movie on pay-per-view before purchasing it. The major complaint I have with this movie is that it did not build the relationshi between the characters, and it is impossible to understand some of the actions done by the characters without some type of development. I think there was potential there, but not a lot of follow through. More like a last minute effort at throwing things together. All in all I think it's not a horrible movie, but it isn't worth having in a collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT for everyone, April 25, 2004
This review is from: Head on (DVD)
I must admit to being sadly dissapointed in this movie! I had been told a lot of good things about it by people, and read a number of reviews for it before finally purchasing it. Having watched it I must say it was not good, but not terrible. I gave it three stars just for the good acting, and because I love a good Autralian accent. lol The plot is, to say the least, lack luster, and is just as muddled and pointless as the main characters life. It was downright boring at times, and that is never good, when the viewer feels compelled to pick up the remote and fast forward. Yikes. While the main Character is attractive, he's on the cover of the box, that is not enough to carry the film, and his taste in men is apparently for the unattractive. The ending is just insane, I mean maybe I've been acclimated to happy endings by U.S. films, but this ending was neither happy, sad, nor even poignant it was just ended. I would suggest not buying this movie. Rent it then buy it, that is the safe bet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful, March 31, 2004
This review is from: Yossi & Jagger (DVD)
I, like many reviewers of this film, was very pleasantly surprised when I viewed it. It was simply fantastic! I can not sing the praises of this movie enough. The emotion, and superb acting more than transcended the language barrier. The cast was attractive too, if that helps any of you out there decide to see it. It's a touching loves story, between two Israeli soldiers, and it plays well on the heart strings. The plot is simple, and yet one of the most effective plots I have encountered in a great long while. It could be considered sad, but it is so uplifting at the same moment, and show that love is universal regardless of the genders of the ones in love. This is a must have for the movie lover, and also those who collect gay cineman. It is a moving story regardless of the sexual persuasion of the viewer, and there is something for everyone. Hope this review has proved useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Movie of humanity, February 19, 2004
This review is from: Km.0 (DVD)
Thank Goodness for European Cinema!! Leave the fantastical budgets, and astounding special effects to the likes of hollywood! This is a movie about humanity, human emotion, and the interaction and development of wonderful characters. The plot is wonderful, there are 12 characters, and all of them are important but it is not, in the least, convoluted. The characters are all well fleshed out and developed, and one can not help but feel empathy, sympathy for each and every one of them. The story involves the characters having independently made arrangements to meet (they do not all know one another, they are meeting in pairs) but they are all meeting at the same spot, the famous Kilometer 0, at the Puerta Del Sol! Confusion for characters ensues, allowing the viewer to see the wonderful mulitdimensionality of them. It is a fast paced and consuming movie. It is in spanish, but has english and french subtitles, ad the wonderful acting does, in many ways, transcend the language barrier. I watched it with a friend who speaks no spanish and he liked it as much as I. There is a love story for everyone in this film, gay or straight. There are relationships other than love and lust as well, and the ecclectic mix of characters makes for a wonderful and transforming film. I encourage all film fans, and fans of humanity and the human condition to buy (or at the very least rent) this film. It is worth while, and can easily be watched more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars You want to see this movie!!, November 18, 2003
This review is from: His Secret Life (DVD)
This is an amazing film!! It is touching, and heart warming wihtout ever getting to be sacharine or melodramatic. The characters are strong and believable and the acting is superb! Foreign movies are great and Italian is a beautiful language to hear! If it helps in your decision the cast is very attractive, and there is one very hot make out scene between three guys. If you are looking for a lot of skin though this is not the movie for you, this is a movie of human relationships and dealing with loss; not to mention coming to terms with the people we love. The main character is a woman who's husband has just died. She discovers he has been having a relationship with another man for 7 years (seti ani). The two (the wife and the other man) become friends and discover things about the man they both loved that they never knew before. It is a complex and engrossing story that can be viewed more than once. So if you have not purchased this DVD yet get to it!! You will not be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Movie, May 8, 2000
This review is from: Trick (DVD)
I bought this movie, and expected it to be really great, and it was! I loved it. The characters are real, not the over used, over sexed ones you can find in a lot of "gay" movies out there. The setting is wonderful, completely in keeping with the feel of the movie, and the situations of the characters. Gabe is cute, vulnerable, and obviously working on achieving his dreams in life. Mark is Confident, macho, and really cute. They get to meet, and during the course of trying to have a one night stand, with constant interuptions, find the beginnings of a relationship. The supporting cast is great too. Tori Spelling is actually good in her roll as the "gay man's best friend" LOL you have to love that. The character of Perry is just incredibly funny, witty, and ultimately loveable. If you don't own this movie, buy it, rent it, get it any way you can, it is worth it.
