The Mind Inside Yang Style Tai Chi: Lao Liu Lu 22-Posture Short Form
The Mind Inside Yang Style Tai Chi: Lao Liu Lu 22-Posture Short Form

5.0 out of 5 stars Internal Martial Arts for deeper practice, July 21, 2016
This is a simple little, straight forward book with very clear photos and illustrations on the surface. When you begin to read it though, you soon discover that it is much deeper and internally focused than other books teaching short Yang style forms.

As the cover states, you "Use intent and heart/mind to deepen your practice". Master Henry Zhuang very carefully walks you through seeing into the body and using your mind to drive the qi which in turn energizes the form . It is an esoteric approach to learning tai chi and may, at first, seem difficult to grasp. Do not fear, as the glossary of terms used is very simple to follow.

I am a long time teacher of taichi, as well as other internal martial arts and I found information in this glossary that normally is not listed in other books of basic tai chi. Things like dao yin , literally "direct and lead", another name for qigong and cun, a measurement used in acupuncture, calculated using the space between the two joints of the thumb or index finger of the individual are generally not even mentioned in most books that teach forms. My favorite instruction involves the use of the eyes. Master Zhuang carefully describes how the look needs to match the flow of the intent and the qi. You will learn how to track the line of sight and extend and retract the qi . In and out circulation, balancing of yin and yang, condensing and expanding with the eye. Very high level teachings.

The photos in the book are in black and white, against a plain background. Each photo has directional arrows showing the angle of the body and limbs, along with the direction of movement. Each photo also has a short description of the movement and the energies associated with the movement. This sets it apart from other teaching tools that only mention the mechanics and direction of movement but leave out the energy associated with each piece of the form.

Beginners will find that it is easy to follow the form of the Lao Liu Lu 22 Posture Short Form using this book. More advanced taichi players will find a treasure chest of internal information and a bit of history of the Yang style forms and families.

5.0 out of 5 stars work and wash easily, June 27, 2016

My husband is a landscaper and uses these to cut down the noise of machines. They work well, are connected together by a cord so they don't get lost. I rinse them with dish soap and hang to dry. They do the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, sturdy and sharp clipper, May 12, 2016
I received these shears at a steep discount in return for an unbiased review. My husband and I are landscape designers by trade and have used many brands of hand clippers. These are sharp, heavy weight and easy to use. They are a bit stiff, but I have only used them for a few weeks. Did a great job cutting spring clippings for the house: lilac, quince, hydrangea and other woody stems, as well as peony and ferns. I am very happy with these shears and glad I got them at such a low, introductory price.

Bought this book for my 90 year old mother living in a nursing home in Florida. She was born and raised in the Bronx during those years. The snow birds living in her assisted living complex are fighting over the chance to borrow this book from her. She loved it!

My 90 year old mother loved this book. The spaces are far enough apart for her to write big and bold. She liked the added note space where I wrote in family birthdays and anniversaries. I included a pack of all occasion cards, a good pen and a book of stamps. She is happy with the gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, Basic, Clear Instruction, April 29, 2016
This is a wonderful resource for anyone beginning to learn basic Tai Chi forms. The 24 Form was developed by the Chinese government in the 1950's as a way for the general public to quickly learn an exercise that would bring better health. The form has it's roots in traditional Yang Family tai chi martial arts . I have taught this same form for more than 20 years and will recommend this DVD to my students looking for a way to review and practice what they are learning in class.

Master Helen Liang is very clear, precise and detailed in her instruction. She is easy to understand and a joy to watch. The form is filmed in multiple directions so you can see her hands from the front and follow the flow of the form from the back. Instruction is given on how to stand properly so that there is no pressure on the back or spine, how to breathe and relax so that the lungs are fully free to function properly and there is even some insight in to how to raise the spirit and use intent of the eyes to meld with movement. My particular favorite form of instruction is to point out common mistakes that beginners make and to show how these mistakes look and ways to correct them. Master Liang uses this technique in her teachings. Stance work and stepping is an important part of any style tai chi. This DVD shows a few basic stances, Bow, Empty, T and how they are used in the form.

The staging and filming of this DVD, as with all others that I own from YMAA is excellent! They are some of the best produced in the business of martial arts instruction. Some scenes are done outside for when you want to follow along and practice with music and a natural setting. Other teaching clips are always done against a plain, clear background with great lighting and instructors wearing simple gear and having excellent posture and stances.

Tai Chi is a life long learning process and a player can learn many levels from practicing simple forms. This DVD is made for the beginner and those looking for a way to do gentle exercise, moving meditation or to just enjoy simple movement. Once you are comfortable with that, be sure to check out more advanced material from the YMAA and find the deeper meanings in the forms. Deep meditation, intense healing, self defense applications and body conditioning and strengthen methods. All can be found in tai chi if you practice long and diligently enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars the story ends with hope, on a wing and a prayer, July 15, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This story contains many problems that are facing people in this country today. Illegal immigrants, poverty, hunger, education systems that are skewed to benefit the rich, disabilities and the bullying that comes with that sometimes, are all themes running through the story. They are tied together with the science and art of feathers. A craft that the Mexican grandfather shared with his grandson and left to him as an inheritance and roadmap to life. Unfortunately, I enjoyed the background information about the feathers, more than the main characters. How many unwed fathers turn up and just happen to be highly educated, world travelled, famous doctors and willing to drop everything to raise the baby they just found out about? None in my circle of friends. How many young men, working in airport bars turn out to be wealthy, well connected and willing to take on an alcoholic co-worker, her two children by different fathers, her son's girl friend and her mother, pay for plane tickets, lawyers, food and housing? None in my circle of friends and neighbors. How many people, with no security money, no two months rent, no car just happen to stumble into a caretaking position in a beautiful cottage that just happens to be fully furnished? Not happening in our part of town. The story for me, was a quick read, with some interesting parts. I liked the way the young boy and his disabled girlfriend approached the first love/sex situation that most kids find themselves in. I liked the description of food and holidays and scientific research. I couldn't get my mind around the neat and tidy way that the three main characters acted toward each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice for baking and tea/drinks, July 4, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The ingredient list has one item, organic coconut palm syrup. It is vegan, Kosher and gluten free. The taste and texture is like the old fashioned Caro Corn Syrup. Thick and sweet. I do not taste the coconut flavor, but more of a caramel taste. I won't be using this for waffles or pancakes, because I prefer the thinner, lighter maple syrup on those dishes. I will be using this in tea, baking and fruit salad mixes. It is listed as a low glycemic sweetener, but it does have130 calories per serving. The packaging does not say it has to be refrigerated after opening, but I will put my bottle in the fridge to be safe.
