Hazardous to you health
, March 30, 2012
These lights and products sold by ePhoto could be very hazardous to your health. I feel particularly qualified to leave this review because I am a medical research doctor and have quite a bit of experience with carcinogenesis research. When I unpacked the lights I noticed an extremely strong organic chemical smell. I was a bit bothered by it but continued putting it together. It is easy to assemble if you have experience with lighting gear but if you don't you may have a lot of trouble. By the time I was finished putting it together my throat itched, my eyes were watering and I felt very nauseous from all of the chemical out gassing. My wife helped me too and she also felt sick. I put the lights in the garage so they wouldn't out gas all the toxic organic compounds in the house. I hoped after a day or two it would go away but it has not. Many carcinogenic compounds such as Benzene, which causes Leukemia and Hodgkin lymphoma, have been used in many plastics and adhesive products. US regulations now keep reputable companies from putting many carcinogenic chemicals in products. US based companies by law must abide by these restrictions. However, companies in China are not subject to US law or regulations. Thus, it is possible for them to build a cheap light such as this one and cover it in all kinds of nasty carcinogenic organic solvents and other chemicals, box it up and ship it out. A company like ePhoto can then buy the Chinese product that doesn't meet US health and safety regulations and sell them through Amazon. It then arrives at your door and you are exposed to very nasty and potentially carcinogenic chemicals.
The lights have sat in my garage for the past two weeks airing out. I just went in the garage to use them and after turning them on for 15 minutes the garage was filled with a horrendous nasty chemical smell. My throat started itching and I got so nauseous I came back inside. I still feel sick and it has been two hours. This is why I feel compelled to write this review. Many carcinogenic organic compounds that cause cancer can be tolerable in small doses. The fact that both my wife and I both got so acutely sick underscores how incredibly toxic the chemicals are that the lights are covered in.
Buyer beware. Cancer and tumors are no joke. It certainly isn't worth saving a few bucks to be exposed to all of the toxic and potentially carcinogenic chemicals in these cheaply made Chinese lights.
