5.0 out of 5 stars Rich, Varied, Complex, January 30, 2008
This review is from: Lime Structure (MP3 Music)
Vibrasphere delivers a rich and complex tapestry of music from house to chillout with this release. It's a great album for dance, workout, or just kicking back and relaxing. Check out the spacey intro track "Soul Wire," as well as the excellent transitional bassline on "Manzanilla."

Try their other albums, "Archipelago" and "Exploring the Tributaries," both available as MP3 downloads here at

You should know that at the time of this review, Amazon lists two Vibrasphere albums titled "Lime Structure." This one (currently $6.99) is the correct version; the track contents on the other are mislabeled and in the wrong order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Awesome!, July 25, 2006
It's hard to describe Another Strange Day on Gonxa. In the genre of dance/techno/electronica, this album spans a broad canvas of tempo, color and mood. You'll find tracks that are exciting, peaceful, spacey and experimental, including Wave World's own rendition of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.

Wave World has a unique style, and this is an excellent gateway album to their work; it's my personal favorite as well. The best way to decide if you'll like their music is to listen to some of it. At the time of this review, Amazon doesn't have any track listing or samples available, but you can find some at Wave World's website or elsewhere on the web.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Interface Device Even If Construction Quality isn't Perfect, April 6, 2006
Easy to set up, and intuitive to use, the Contour Design ShuttlePRO V.2 is a must have for video editors, digital music composers, or others who need to do a lot of shuttle and jog work. The driver software provides application-sensitive control that switches input functions depending on the program in use (Photoshop, Excel, etc.) as well as allowing global control settings. Reconfiguring the buttons and dials is both straightforward and simple to do: launch the configuration program, and click or move the control that you want to reassign; the ShuttlePRO configuration program automatically selects the right input, and you enter the keystroke and modifiers (shift, control, alt).

The hardware is generally well-designed, having a low profile that fits comfortably under an average sized hand. With a jog dial constructed of aluminum, the action feels smooth and certain. Several of the button-tops snap off and on easily for adding custom labels.

On the negative side, and the one reason I couldn't give the product 5 stars, is the construction of the housing. For a device needs to lie solidly on the desktop, my unit had a slight convex warp (about 1/16" over the length of the footprint). It may not sound like much, but this was enough to cause an annoying rockiness under my hand. The problem was easy enough to solve by peeling off the middle two rubber foot-pads and sticking them to the bottom of the front two pads (see my customer-submitted picture above).

Final verdict: A nice unit with software that performs well even if the hardware construction quality isn't perfect. I'd buy another if I needed one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Taste of Mule Days, March 30, 2006
If you've ever wondered about Bishop, California's Mule Days, here's your chance to find out what it's all about. Longears Everywhere is an introduction/documentary on some of the people, events, and history of Bishop's annual celebration. The narrative of the interviewer is relaxed and colloquial, but will give you a taste of what to expect if you're planning on visiting Mule Days.

An IMPORTANT note about the DVD media: This disc won't play in all DVD players. The following text-sticker is affixed inside the case:

This is a custom made DVD-R disc. This disc is playable on 95% of current table-model DVD players. Some computer DVD players do not play the DVD-R format. If your table-model DVD player is older or an odd model that does not play this custom DVD, please obtain an appropriate DVD player or VHS tape copy.

(I especially like that last sentence about how to resolve this problem!) In fact, I couldn't play the disc on an older (1998) model player, but it worked fine using a newer (2004) model.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Bond Spoof from the Era of Classic Bond, October 29, 2002
This review is from: Casino Royale (DVD)
Casino Royale is hilarious bond spoof produced during the time while Sean Connery was still playing James Bond in the regular Bond films. It has a remarkable cast of stars, including David Niven, Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, and a young 32 year old Woody Allen.
The film suffers from a certain amount of discontinuity, which having only seen it on TV in the past, I took to be an artifact of it being edited for television. The extra material provided with the DVD, an interview with director Val Guest, explains why this is (I won't spoil it for you). Keeping these behind-the-scenes facts in mind, makes the movie even more entertaining.
I probably laughed more as I child when I watched this movie, but I certainly get more of the jokes as an adult. It's also great fun to take a trip back in time and see these classic actors spoofing the Bond image. I give Casino Royale 4 stars for nostalgia and goofy fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Desert Blues, June 1, 2002
Rancho Diablo has compiled an album of deeply soulful music that transports you to the California high desert perhaps during the Great Depression, or maybe it's after the Internet Bust.
You'll imagine yourself, a post-modern hobo, sleeping under a star-filled sky, camping by an alkali lake, coffee boiling in a tin can hung over a fire; or walking along a lonely two-lane highway, dust swirling across the road, as you head toward no particular destination.
Listening to Rancho Diablo's music evokes melancholy and imagination. It draws you in and takes you with it. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original Nokia Packaging, May 30, 2002
I almost didn't order this product from Amazon, because of the earlier review that said the battery was repackaged and the warranty was covered by Cellstar. In case you have any misgivings based upon that review, my battery arrived in its original Nokia bubble pack, with a 1-year warranty covered by Nokia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read the Book First!, July 30, 2001
This film is a great documentary with wonderful archival and contemporary footage of Clara Rockmore and Leon Theremin playing the instrument. After reading Albert Glinsky's biography, Theremin: Ethermusic & Espionage, this film brings another dimension to many of the people in that book.
Sadly, "this film has been reformatted to fit your television..."
This means that the identifying text of who's speaking on camera is missing, translations of interviews in Russian go unseen, and a good deal of explanatory information is lost. You can resort to the subtitles if you read French or Spanish though!
If the production quality were up to par with the original content, this DVD would be a 5. Amazon doesn't give an option of 2.5 stars which what I'd rate it if I could.
It's not mediocre, it's just disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Many Copies?, June 27, 2001
I must have purchased 5 copies of this book over the past 15 years. I keep loaning it out to friends and losing track of who has my copy so I have to buy a new one when I want to re-read the book. It's absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. Filled with adventurous tales and fascinating characters, Bridge of Birds is a thrilling trip across a mythical China.
Bridge of Birds would make a great movie!
