5.0 out of 5 stars Right wins again, but at what price?, January 1, 2016
Kim's done it again! This is a highly unusual book with a very different story line than Kim usually writes. I was riveted from the first page. The characters were well-rounded and each had a very different personality. The storyline revolves around a young girl forced into prostitution and rescued after experiencing much hardship. The end twist is sad but appropriate. I highly recommend this as a well-written, interesting novella.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Author, Brilliant book!, November 12, 2015
I love this book! I actually read it twice in a row so I could post a review that would be honest and not give too much credit if it isn't due. Author Armando Minutoli has written a brilliant book that not only makes you think, but as the plot deepens, heightens your interest in things unseen and sometimes not really thought about until the time comes when you have no choice. The characters are complex, and very different. It's what keeps this novel so good. Tony Romero and Obe - two people from different walks of life, are searching, are sometimes angry, sometimes amazed, but always solidly looking for the truth.

Have you ever thought about what heaven is really like? Do you have a picture of it in your mind? What about hell? Think about that much? This book will give you food for thought and, I think, will change the way you look at the hereafter forever. Some of us wonder if we'll be able to see loved ones in heaven. Some of us wonder and are very afraid of what hell is like. What if it is nothing like you've always imagined? What would you do then? This book asks as many questions as it answers and the interpretation is up to the reader. I was astonished more than once at the author's description of the afterlife.

This book is excellent from beginning to end and I promise, will have you thinking about it constantly long after you've put it down. It's the best book I've read and reviewed in some time and I highly recommend that anyone who is interested in contemplating an afterlife so different, so human, so wonderful and so heterogeneous get a copy of the book. It'll be one of the best books you've read in a long time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Life as She Knew It, August 7, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Author Diana Estill gives us a taste of real life in When Horses Had Wings. I loved the title and picked the book up thinking it was a story I might enjoy. Was I ever glad I did! Written in First Person, it follows the story of Anne Goodchild and Kenneth Murphy, thrown into adulthood too soon. Anne is sixteen years old when she falls for Kenny and becomes pregnant. They marry and have a son they name Sean. Anne is elated over her son's birth and becomes the mother she always wished her own mother had been. Kenneth, no longer a boy, is an unfeeling man, who is abusive to Anne. She isn't allowed to drive, hit, put down and mistreated in every way Kenny can think of. Although he always pleads for forgiveness, Anne is terrified of him hurting their son. Thus begins the saga of a young mother with no skills or school diploma who pulls herself up by the bootstraps to make something of herself and care for her son alone, without the father she believes is unsuitable. What follows is divorce, a heartbreaking custody battle, and growing up through each thing Anne has to endure. The story comes full-circle at the end and you'll be surprised. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kim Cano Has Done It Again!, August 7, 2015
This review is from: Eighty and Out (Paperback)
Kim Cano is one of my favorite authors. Her realistic characters are well-developed and her story-lines interesting. In this book, the author takes on the subject of living and dying and a pact between two sisters to live until they are eighty before they die. Set in the innocent age of the 1950s, the two sisters evolve into adults who never forget their pact. Circumstances beyond their control force them to live normal lives instead of reaching for dreams they so desperately want. This is a story of innocence, growing up, unfulfilled dreams and living and dying. It's a can't-put -down book and you'll read it straight through, I promise. I was engulfed in the story, the ups and downs of a bland life, a strong bond between two sisters, life in the age of innocence, and dreams that may never come true, but are reached for anyway. It smacks of realism and relates to the reader in every way. Don't miss this one - it's a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving Family or Mob - You Choose!, August 7, 2015
This review is from: The Hester Street Kids (Paperback)
Author Armando Minutoli has written a book that cannot be put down until it is read in its entirety. Born to poor Italian immigrants, in the 1920s, 5 chldren; Concetta, Birdie, Peppino, Anthony and Tommaso formed a pact to stay together and protect each other. Their meeting place was a table handmade by Birdie as a school project. The kids shared their joys and sorrows and formed plans to seek revenge for wrongs done to each of them. When Concetta is abused by her drunken father, Birdie steps in as the group leader and says to leave the problem to him. The children grow up to become involved in street crime. Because of their daring escapades and not getting caught, the mob watched Birdie with a careful eye as they liked his low-key personality.

Skip to the 1950s. The Hester Street Kids are grown up and married but still remain friends who would do anything for each other. Birdie, upon returning from the service is placed in a pharmacy by the mob as a front. Illegal dealings and back-room surgeries are carried on in the back rooms of the pharmacy. Birdie has a family at home who has no idea of his real status as a mob figure and an adoring daughter, Katherine, who thinks he hung the moon. When she learns of her fathers crimes she is heartbroken and determined to delve deeper into his background. She meets Kevin, falls in love and they make plans to marry. Her whole world threatens to crumble as she finds out the friends and loved ones she has held in the highest esteem are also members of the mob.

What will Katherine do with the information she has gleaned? Will she and Kevin have a future? Will the mob continue to overtake New York City?

You'll have to read this fascinating book to find out. It's not only well-written, but suspenseful, historical, and a story of innocence shattered. I guarantee you'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Policing the days of unrest and turbulence in NYC 1960 - 1980, March 24, 2015
Former NYPD cop Jim O''Neil has had quite a career in law enforcement. He writes of the dark years of policing - the 1960's to the 1980's. This type of police work would not be tolerated today, but the author has been honest and open about a young cop's rise through the ranks, the people he served with, and the tactics used. It was a different time and police ruled. Jim starts out his career on foot patrol as a rookie. During his time of policing the area he gains trust and many informants. He describes gang activity and how the police retaliate - stating that this is "their turf" and the thugs had better be aware of it. Consequently, the area Jim and his partner patrol on foot becames nearly crime-free. On his journey up the ladder, Officer O'Neill move gives kudos to the special men on the NYPD force he served with.. He is also tagged to thin out the force by finding cops who are on the take. I really liked this book, but there may be some who choose not to read it, because the author has been very truthful in the way the NYPD Police Department was run at the time, and includes violence. I felt it was an honest look at a time when things were much different than today, and in my eyes, Jim O'Neill and his partners kept their beats crime-free.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, March 3, 2015
This review is from: Playback Effect (Kindle Edition)
I was astounded when I read this book. The premise is so different than any other book I have read. The author intertwines, love, deceit, and evil with a bit of a futuristic plot. Ms. Wyle kept me on the edge of my seat and I found it hard to stop reading. Her characters are very different and well thought-out. Her writing style is good as she transitions from one setting to another. The characters? You either love them or hate them, but you will definitely remember the protagonist. Whether you are into Sci-Fi type books or futuristic fiction you'll love this book. If you love to read ANY type of fiction you'll love this! Get it and read it. You won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Steamy Romance or Family Values? You be the judge!, July 14, 2014
This book was not what I expected from "steamy" romance. It was so much better! Marie has written not only a book with steamy sex scenes that are tasteful, she has also written a good book that involves family values, and morals. Samantha's job as a nurse is her center and she loves her job and her patients. Her favorite is Mrs. Myszkowski, a woman with quite a personality and a penchant for cigarettes, although she has emphysema and is hooked up to oxygen. Sam's other favorite patient is Mr. Varo, who has a son, Greg, that Sam immediately has unusual feelings for. What follows is not only a touching look at a family who supports each other with all their problems, an ex-boyfriend who begs to be part of Sam's life again, and her confusion about her feelings for Greg. This is a good read and one I would highly recommend!
