3.0 out of 5 stars Underrated mystery-horror., March 23, 2003
This review is from: Milo (DVD)
A young boy, Milo, kills a girl and stabs her friends. Sixteen years later, one of the girls, Claire, returns to the town to attend her friend's wedding. But when she arrives she learns the friend died in a car accident the day before. Claire takes over the friend's teaching job and soon she starts to see a boy who looks just like Milo.
This is the standard slasher movie plot but the movie is somewhat different. First of all, it has less main characters than most slashers, which makes you care more for them, and especially the heroine, Claire. On the other hand, less characters mean less opportunities to kill them. The result is a horror movie that is more of a mystery than a gory slasher.
The movie is director Pascal Franchot's first, and so far only moviem and some scenes could have been better made, but overall this is a good debut.
In my opinion, this is better than the standard slasher because the plot is more interesting and the characters are better than in many slashers and easier to care for. The last fifteen or twenty minutes aren't quite as good as the rest of the movie, but still not bad. If you're looking for a mystery-horror movie, give this a try! If you want a slahser with as many killings as possible, there are other movies that would be better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hooper tries, and fails, to repeat his "Chainsaw" success, March 15, 2003
This review is from: Eaten Alive (DVD)
In "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", Tobe Hooper managed to create a perfect mix of chaos, horror and very dark humour. In this movie he tries to do the same thing, but fails. It has some very chaotic scenes and scenes with dark humour but this movie just isn't shocking in the way that Chainsaw was.Judd is a pretty good character, somewhat similar to the Jim Siedow character in Chainsaw, but most of the things in this movie, including the plot, is not very interesting.
This movie can be worth checking out for "Chainsaw" fans, but don't expect too much from it. If you're not a fan of "Chainsaw" or Tobe Hooper - don't bother.

1.0 out of 5 stars Al Adamson fails again.... Stay away!, March 3, 2003
This review is from: Blood of Ghastly Horror (DVD)
I had seen two movies by Al Adamson before this one, "Dracula vs Frankenstein" and "Vampire Men of the Lost Planet", so needless to say, my expectations weren't very high, but this movie still managed to disappoint me.
As usual, it doesn't take long until Al Adamson seems to forget the main plot, and instead focuses on totally uninteresting side plots. And unlike "Vampire Men of the Lost Planet", this movie isn't the least "good-bad", it doesn't have any entertainment value at all except maybe in some of the scenes in the beginning with John Carradine. He gets top billing but his part is actually pretty small.
I can not recommend this movie, not even to fans of bad movies, like myself. Save yourself the time and money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this one at all costs...., November 1, 2002
This review is from: Domino [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie has been called "drama" as well as "erotic thriller". But it really doesn't belong in any genre at all. It has no plot, at least none that makes any sense or will keep you interested. The filmmakers try desperately to create stylish sets and lighting, but it only feels really pretentious, just like most of the long, pointless scenes with dialogue that make no sense and that add nothing to the non-existing plot. The movie has a couple of erotic scenes with Brigitte Nielsen, but it's nothing that is worth the pain of watching the rest of the movie.<...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a "real" Bond movie, but still entertaining., October 7, 2002
This review is from: Never Say Never Again (DVD)
This is the remake of "Thunderball", the Bond story that Danjaq and Eon didn't own the film rights to. So because it was made by another company, it doesn't have the classical Bond opening, the James Bond theme or the usual actors in the parts of M, Q and Moneypenny. In other words, it doesn't quite have the Bond "feeling". But it's still an entertaining action-adventure. Sean Connery still knows how to play James Bond and Klaus Maria Brandauer is very good as the villain. I can recommend it

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Bond adventure, October 7, 2002
This was Sean Connery's comeback as Bond after George Lazenby's appearance in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" 1969, and before Roger Moore took over in 1973 ("Live and Let Die").
It has a great comic book-like plot involving diamond smuggling, casinos, super weapons, assassins and Bond's arch-nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Charles Gray is good as the villain and the [dumb] assassins, Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint are among the best Bond characters ever.
This is probably one of the best Bond movies. It's very entertaining, a must have for all Bond fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well it is entertaining...., July 23, 2002
This review is from: Guardian [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The movie starts with a text about druids who worshipped trees and sacrificed human victims to them. After that there is a prologue where a family's nanny does this. Then we get to know the heroes of the movie, Phil and kate, just moved to Los Angeles and expecting a baby. After the baby boy is born, they find Camilla, who seems to be the perfect nanny. But under the charming surface lies a dark secret... You figure out the rest...
This movie is occasionally a little silly and without the info about the druids in the beginning, the story wouldn't make much sense. But that doesn'r matter. The Guardian is a nice and entertaining movie. A sequence in the middle of the movie and the ending are especially good. Jenny Seagrove is very good as Camilla. While not a masterpiece, this is an entertaining movie, definitely worth watching and a fun addition to your movie collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining B thriller, July 11, 2002
This review is from: Shattered Image [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Helen and her brother-in-law, David, kidnaps Helen's husband Ben, to get the ransom money from his company. But things don't go as planned and Ben and an FBI agent gets killed. Afterwards, the agent's partner and Helen become friends and, before long, also lovers. But strange things start to happen. Is Ben still alive? Does David have plans of his own? Something is wrong...
This is a grade B thriller made for TV. While not the best movie in the world (I don't think anyone expected it to be), it does its job - to entertain, and does it quite well. It is an entertaining movie with just enough twists in the plot to make it interesting. At least worth renting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad, but a wonderful camp classic, July 10, 2002
This review is from: The Lonely Lady [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I like b-movies and after reading a lot of reviews about how awful this movie is, I got curious and bought it. The movie smells low budget but what makes it bad is a silly screenplay and directing like in an amateur movie. It also has some bad acting. Pia Zadora isn't capable of making a believable portrayal of the the heroine, Jerilee (who could with this screenplay?), but she is really charming and on a camp level, her performance is wonderful.
This is a pretty bad movie, but it's also very entertaining. Everybody who likes campy movies, like I do, should own a copy of this movie. I've seen it three times in six months without getting the least bored. If you like campy cult movies - Buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Howling sequels. But bad special effects., July 6, 2002
This review is from: Howling 6 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In this sequel, a man, Ian, arrives in a small town and helps the townspeople with the renovation of a church. He becomes friends with them and falls in love with a girl. But it's soon full moon and Ian turns out to be a werewolf. There's another stranger in town as well, freak show owner Harker, who captures Ian to use him in his show.
The quality of the Howling sequels is varying. All have that b-movie feeling. Some are good and some are less good. Howling VI has a quite good story and some acting that is above b-movie level. Bruce Payne makes a funny performance as Harker. The plot, however doesn't quite last throughout the entire movie. The worst thing about the movie thoug, is probably the special effects in the transformation scenes. These ridiculous special effects make the general impression not as good as it could, or should, be.
However, it is a decent werewolf movie, actually a bit better than I had expected. It's better than Howling III and V, but not as funny as Howling II. It's about as good as the underrated Howling IV. I can recommend it to werewolf movie lovers and those who liked any of the other Howling-sequels.
