3.0 out of 5 stars Strong Acting, good effects but falls apart in the 3rd act. Middleing and I bet it disappoints fans of the book., September 22, 2014
I have not read the books but the odd climax and abrupt ending leads me to believe it is just a mediocre adaptation to the book. It is clear the filmmakers believed they were going to make this a franchise because the 3rd act is all over the place. Overall the actors were strong and it was decent science fiction. The end of it heads of the rails and leaves the viewers wondering where it exactly went wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching and well done!, June 4, 2012
If you have ever coached or played organized team sports, this book hits home with poignant and touching moments. Much more a coming of story than about sports. Shows that you can learn some of life's hardest lesson and best from losing. Well done. Check it out.

Chris Colston's Hokie Football Annual 2010
Chris Colston's Hokie Football Annual 2010

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish they did something like this for all BCS teams!, June 4, 2012
I ran across this while traveling through Virginia. Since I am a huge college football fan, I grabbed it for some light reading to see what they do on the other side. What I found turned out to be the most comprehensive piece of team information I have seen in one magazine. Amazing detail and great articles that can keep non-fans interested.

Imagine something like Athlon's college preview except solely dedicated to your team! I was completely surprised that a team like Virginia Tech had something like this in print. I am sure you can find stuff like this for Michigan and OSU but we are definitely lacking this in the PAC10..er...12!. Colston - please do this for the Ducks!

A must for all Virginia Tech football fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good fight sequences but some wierd creative choices = Meh?!, June 4, 2012
Soderbergh is clearly out of his element with a straight action piece. While there are some good fight sequences there are plenty of odd and wierd creative choices that kept reducing the tension and took me out of the film. The biggest one is his score. Terrible. It may work when he used the exact same thing in Oceans 11 but it doesn't fit and failed miserably when using during tense chase scenes.

The second big fail was his lead choice. While this girl clearly has the looks and athletics to carry something like this, she didn't quite pull it off. Carano is nice to look at but she lacked dept during the few chances for her character to show any emotion. They had to fall back on a flash back to an earlier scene in the movie to give some exposition on what her character is feeling - never a good sign. With A-List talent in the lead (think Jolie)is could have been top notch. Seems like a big back-fire for Soderbergh in going with a non-actor to carry this role.

Just an ok movie if you happen to catch it on cable during a rainy Sunday....otherwise, pass......

5.0 out of 5 stars Just an all around thrilling film!, May 18, 2012
Not much to say other than I was surprised across the board that this held up. Great acting, cool visuals and a well done, well thought out, taught film. Much better than I think the reviews even indicated. I suspect that fans of the series will always come away underwhelmed because film just can't pull everything together like you can in 1000 pages.

If you think you will be turned off by the grisly nature of the story, I urge you to check it out. Some scenes can be tough but Craig and Mara have great chemistry.

Big thumbs up!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch, Please revoke this guys director card! One of the worst films...Period, May 18, 2012
This review is from: Living & Dying (DVD)
Yikes...not sure why these guys choose to actually shoot this movie on film. Definitely not worth the money nor any of your time!

Even fans of Michael Madsen will run from this one.

Whoever this director is, someone needs to step in and prevent this guy from making more fil..er...crap?! His talents lie outside of film making. Bad story, terrible script, terrible direction, no artistic choices, odd choice of actors and a director who clearly cannot direct, especially action...if that's what you call this.

Any 6 grader with a cap gun and a camera phone can come up with something better than what you see here....RUN AWAY, FAR, FAR AWAY!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Installment but there is something missing, May 18, 2012
This was a good actioner - nothing too bad, great effects, decent acting but something about it just didn't click. Not sure what exactly it is even as I write this. I just didn't buy into the back story about Ethan's wife getting killed or the crew he was working with. They just didn't really gel on screen or make me care one way or another. Cruise didn't really have much going on emotionally, other than looking 20 years younger than he really is (I think I may need to check out this Scientology thing!). Which left me watching a bunch of really big, cool set pieces, stunts and effects, but with no really emotional engagement. When the resolution comes at the end of the story, I was just kind of ready to shut it off. Not a bad film, but nothing too special either. Probably better to see it in a theater with a bunch of fan boys, than at home on the couch.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Stylized, 80's-like thriller. Violent but very cool., March 2, 2012
Not everyone's cup of tea, but I found this one really interesting and very cool. Deliberate pacing with explosions of violence that catch you off guard. It took me a while to get used the Refn's stylized, 80's like directing choices but then I found myself really digging it. In summary, a stunt driver moonlights as a "getaway" driver for lowlifes. He gets tangled up with one of his neighbors and ultimately dragged into a robbery gone bad. It puts him on the run from some mean thugs lead by Books. Gosling is good playing the quiet, minimalist, but deadly (scorpion) driver for hire. Brooks got an Oscar nod for his role as a likable but dark mobster. Violent to some extremes but very cool. Definitely check it out but make sure your data is ready to cover their eyes during a few scenes....
