4.0 out of 5 stars Heaps of Suspensful fun., March 3, 2016
This review is from: Bates Motel: Season 3 (DVD)
This show seems to get better every season and especially Season Three where it starts to explore in more detail the historic story set up in the original "Psycho" Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore are both terrific and it amazes me this show does't pick up more Golden Globe and Emmy attention. Since "B reaking Bad" and "Mad Men" finished, this is the only series that keeps me interested through all its episodes . Cast is uniformly excellent, its great tidy television and a heap of fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this series and I had heard good comments, December 18, 2015
This review is from: Better Call Saul: Season One (DVD)
I really wanted to love this series and I had heard good comments. I was seriously disappointed, no one expected
Breaking Bad", and there is no doubt Vince Gilligan's style is interesting, but the series suffers from sequel or prequelitis---a pale reproduction of aspects of the original. Stories are slight, character development is laboured and often contrived and despite the fine work of Bob Odenkirk as Saul, it is Mike who makes the story interesting and there is just not enough of him and far too much of Saul's meanderings none of which amount to much. Gilligan is a genius writer and creator and director, he should b e turning his talents to feature films or something less flimsy than this PS the Final episode which could have sold me, is the least interesting episode of the whole series.

4.0 out of 5 stars overly plotted American version of the far superior British series, October 23, 2015
This review is from: House of Cards: Season 3 (DVD)
I have never been totally convinced by this series until Season 3. Until then it was always a slightly inferior, overly busy, overly plotted American version of the far superior British series, but in Season 3 the series really comes into its own. Dialobgue sparkles, suddenly it all bnecome sreal rather than the overdone attempts to mimic "The Scottish Play" , here the characters are suddenly multi dimensional and the series isnt plagued with too many complicated sub plots that go nowhere. Similarly for the first time the look of the supporting characters are clearly defined, fop a while there I found so many look alike brunette actors I kept thinking "now which one is she again?" Series Three also has what is considered by many to be the best episode of the series, the modern classic Episode 32 set mostly in a Russian prison,. this is the episode where the series finally touches on greatness, modern and relevant and not make believe melodrama. This is also the season where Robin Wright steps out from being the cliched Lady M and starts to become multi layered and interesting for the first time.........I would see a max of one more seasn for the series which has to be the fall of Francis Underwood and the fall needs to be pretty dark and targic.

This is about as good as it gets. You can choose between the slightly edited director's cut or the extended version which FINALLY preserves the complete movie that was only ever previously available on laser disc.; So now we can see the full version of the wonderful opening number "Piddle Twiddle and Resolve". This is one of a handful of stage to screen musicals which stand the test of time and preserve the full intent of the play while still remaining filmic. A terrific print and great sound, now if someone could release on CD the original soundtrack recording and include "Cool Cool Conservative Men" my life would be complete

IF you already have copies in blu ray , this is a total waste of money. The only new thing in the whole package is the one hour special with Julie Andrews which is available on line. The CD included, which I thought had new tracks not previously released (no sorry, not the same CD) has some of the old tracks mastered from the 40th anniversary release and songs in GERMAN (why???) Its nicely packaged but no attempt has been made to refresh the blu ray print which, is, while very good, still far from what it could be. Just a waste of money. Fox rips off again and Amazon as usual gives no direct info.....feel so angry.

It cant be gone. !!!! Finally its over, except its not as it ends on a cliffhanger. The series, on e of the truly great TV legends deserve a better exit. There needs to be a telemovie made (as in the original series) to tie up all the loose ends. Just one 90 minute one, will do/ Surely TNT can manage that? Otherwise the final ever episode of the most famous of TV series will forever be left up in the air. A terrible tribute toi Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and all those that came and went before.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good enactment of this modern classic play, November 6, 2014

Very good enactment of this modern classic play. It seems much of it sounds studio recorded with audience reaction dubbed in later as some of the acting sounds contrived and lacks energy. Shirley Knight is a wonder

3.0 out of 5 stars Too exploitive, November 6, 2014
Little bewildered people like this series as much as they do A lot of the sex scenes are very exploitive and of course most of the nudity is very female oriented. Storyline is interesting but padded out too much and I doubt I would have stayed without the wonderful work of Alison Janney.

2.0 out of 5 stars It is ridiculous and virtually impossible towatch (not helped by a poor print), September 20, 2014

Hideously Dated.
I was not prepared for exactly how dated this movie is. Critics have often compared it more favourably to the 1951 remake, but there are no comparisons. It is ridiculous and virtually impossible to watch (not helped by a poor print).Irene Dunne as a child(!!?>?) mimmicking african americans then dressing in black face and that's just the begiunning. It deserves to be relegated to the dustbin of time, when times have moved on as much as they have, despite the great music- this movie becomes nothing more than an embarassing relic.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good as It Gets, July 24, 2014
This review is from: The BIG C - SEASON 04 (DVD)
This final season of four one hour long episodes is about as good as Tv can get, right up there with the best of "Breaking Bad" and thats saying something. Dealing so directly with someone dying of cancer, it could have been maudlin and drawn out, but it plays its story with such warmth, truth and good humour that it leaves one a little gobsmacked. Laura Linney is beyond brilliant and her performance in the final scenes is about the first time for many years that a drama has made me cry, sheerly out of wonder and respect for her performance...A rich gift....the whole series is wonderful and this is the perfect climax.
