4.0 out of 5 stars A well balanced CD., October 10, 2003
This review is from: Horizon (Audio CD)
There are some songs on here that are superb. For example, SOLITAIRE, I CAN DREAM CAN'T I and ONLY YESTERDAY.
Then a few of them are just OK. But overall, the album is great and also the sound quality is superb.
A word on I CAN DREAM CAN'T I: Billy May (legendary) arranged this for Karen Carpenter and it's beautiful. Basically, it's a dreamy 40s ballad done in a modernized 40s style........
I wish Karen would have done more along those line.
This a good album for serious CARPENTERS fans but not beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this a lot!, August 20, 2003
This review is from: The Great Outdoors (DVD)
While this movie is typical 80s slaptstick with a bit teenage romance, it is a wholesome movie and funny at that.
The plot definetely contrasts the family man (played by John Candy)vs. the 80s YUPPIE (Akroyd). Underneath all the nonsense, luckily the message of this movie is that family is more important.
I recommend this to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun but a bit repititive, August 16, 2003
This review is from: Can't Get Enough (Audio CD)
I remember my DAD having the original 33 which was fun to listen to so naturally this CD is special.
However, Barry White is one of those artists whose songs sound a bit alike after a while. So you can buy a GREATEST HITS collection and leave it at that.
I bought this one for two reasons: MELLOW MOOD Pt. 1 and the introduction on YOU'RE THE FIRST, LAST, EVERYTHING cause that intro was left off on the GREATEST HITS CD.
If you're a long time serious White fan, get this album. Otherwise, a GREATEST HITS album will suffice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic.....an almost perfect album, August 16, 2003
This review is from: Trilogy (Audio CD)
This album is NOT for the beginning or casual Sinatra fan but MUST have for the serious music critic.
Perhaps one is overhelmed by the amount of music. Perhaps the fact that this album sold VERY well influences ones review.
But I simply LOVE almost all the music on the PAST and PRESENT and I am amused by the FUTURE which was defintely influenced by STAR WARS which came out a few years before this album.
Frank's singing on all albums is strong; his voice now older but still dramatic and very effective and romantic. The arrangements are ALL top notch and yes while some of them remind us of the 1940s a bit (so what??), they are updated and fresh which places them into the timeless category. Plus, the sound quality of 1940s recordings was of course nothing near what we had 1979 and since. Overall the sound is good; perhaps a bit bright but other than that, the albums sounds fat and solid..which it should, they're huge orchestras on here. If only DUETS I and II had sounded like this....
The songs themselves vary from classic (e.g. STREET OF DREAMS) to 2nd rate material (e.g. THAT'S WHAT GOD LOOKS LIKE) and some of the contemporary songs were already OLDIES by 1979 e.g. LOVE ME TENDER which came out in 1954. It just shows that standards are TIMELESS - a song can be written in the 20s and still sound fresh 50 plus years later when Sinatra sings it. JUST THE WAY YOU ARE on the other hand sounds dated by today's standards - it is an oldie reminding us of the late 70s - but a good one it is and Sinatra does one heck of a job swinging it hard. Perhaps when Sinatra sings a song it becomes a standard. YOU AND ME and MAC ARTHUR PARK are stunning and Costa outdid himself on the arrangmenents..same goes for SUMMER ME WINTER ME.
SINATRA's heart is in all the songs whether they're from the AMERICAN songbook (1920-1965) or from the rock era.
Granted, the FUTURE is a bit hard to digest at first but it will grow on you. Think of it as a movie on record....and then use your imagination......

5.0 out of 5 stars An almost perfect collection..., August 4, 2003
There is one gripe: YOU'RE MY FIRST, MY LAST, MY EVERYTHING does not have the introduction with the words spoken by Barry which was on the original CAN'T GET ENOUGH album. I think sometimes his introductions are almost comical.
But other than that...a perfect collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL ALBUM..., June 26, 2003
This review is from: Nice N Easy (Audio CD)
This album ranks as my favorite ballad album from the CAPITOL era. Although recorded in 1960, it still very much ties in with the series of concept albums recorded by Sinatra at CAPITOL records.
The songs are beautiful and tender (the title song really was just a commercial and fun success and stands on his own)and Nelson Riddle's arrangements are as supportive as ever and very very intimate.
This not an album to go to sleep over but one that underneath a surface of being nice'n easy has a lot of emotions and depth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this KENNY G?, May 10, 2003
This review is from: Jazz Combo Hymns (Audio CD)
This CD is a mixture of what Kenny G (and most smooth jazz stations) call jazz and perhaps a few elements of traditional small combo cool jazz.
But the CD lacks character. You can use it for a cocktail party, elevator music or for going to sleep.
It is bland.

The reader is calm but firm. Yes, he is not Laurence Olivier reading the KING JAMES BIBLE but it doesn't matter.
I really like this Bible a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid CD - barely 5 stars., May 10, 2003
I like this one. The songs are great and they have rhythm section on a lot of the songs. Even if it's just a bass and soft drums, they tighten up the songs and prevent them from dragging on and on.
Some of the singers are just OK and the orchestrations are very commercial sounding and you can tell that this CD was probably made in section (overdub rather than a big live session).
But the choir is nice and overall I am very satisfied with the product!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but nice., May 10, 2003
This review is from: 31 Classic Hymns (Audio CD)
The orchestration is lush and sounds real (no string machine, not keyboards, not computers). The choir sounds full but the lower voices could be a bit louder - a problem with a lot of choirs.
The songs are all sacred classics and despite the fact they have been shortened, they're still uplifting and awesome.
Compared to a lot of hymn CDs, I've listented to or sampled, this one is great. I'd recommend it to anyone.
