4.0 out of 5 stars Great Thought for Ponder, June 4, 2015

A former spiritual director of mine sent me towards this book when I asked him whether I should accept directees who were coming to me. I have never had official training in spiritual direction so I was looking for something to give me at least an idea of what to look out for or to avoid. This book gave me exactly what I was looking for: how to bring people to a closer relationship with God. I gave it four stars since I believe the authors could have been clearer on the traditional Christian and biblical understanding of God (...maybe that was not the goal of the book tho, after all the authors are trying to reach a broader audience). Recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scriptural and Sourceful, November 15, 2012

This book displays great resource as well as assent to the teaching of Scripture. Many since Vatican II have assumed that everyone (maybe minus persons like Hitler and Judas) will go to heaven--if someone died, now they are happy in heaven. Dr. Ralph Martin addresses this "false compassion" and compares it to what Scripture says: "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." (Matt. 13:7 RSV). Also he mentions Lumen Gentium, 16 which clearly does not say that "all" will go to heaven but that there are requirements for salvation. God does not force anyone into heaven.

Furthermore, Martin addresses Karl Rahner's and Hans Urs von Balthasar's theology which express it is likely that all will be saved. Though he realizes these are great theologians and have great works adding to the world of theology, in this particular area of thought they have drifted from Scripture and Catholic teaching. "Will Many Be Saved?..." is an excellent and well thought out book for the topic of salvation.

3.0 out of 5 stars The NABRE, December 16, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When I first got the NABRE, I was delighted at how well it works with the Kindle touch. The chapter scrolling works well, easy to navigate. In relation to some minor details I noticed in reading Sirach 24 (Ben Sira as it is listed)that the verse numbering is off. Verses 18 and 24 seem to be skipped however the chapter goes to verse 33 rather than 31 so all verses are there just numbered wrong.

Regarding the translation, inclusive language is used in many cases where it is not so in the Hebrew or Greek. The meaning of a passage may change drastically if it is not translated according the culture it was written in. This translation translates it into today's culture which makes it harder to understand the Hebrew or Israelite culture. For anyone who is aiming at doing real exegetical work, this translation I would hardly recommend. If you are using it for reading purposes not so much exegetical, or are new to reading the Bible it would be a good Bible to have.
