This review is going to be eerily similar to my previous review of David Kahn's first DVD set; Mastering Krav Maga (Volume I)
in that all of the key points are the same, only the information provided is different although the substance of that information is the same as in his previous DVD set, very informative, very solid, and well worth the price. So with that in mind, on with the review...
Well I feel that I should start off this review by stating that I literally have dozens of DVD's and books on Krav Maga and various self-defense systems, etc., and I have found some to contain a lot of great information, while others contain very little quality information. However, I have learned something valuable from every book and DVD I own, although admittedly a lot more from some than from others. However, after viewing this five-disc DVD set released by David Kahn I have absolutely no reservation at all at placing his latest work (along with his previously released DVD set) at the top of the DVD heap in terms of quality of content. As with his previous DVD set, after watching all five-discs I realized that David and I are right at about 95% on our mutual philosophies concerning self-defense and the techniques that we teach. The 5% that wasn't the same was merely small differences in both philosophy and the execution of certain techniques where I may teach them slightly differently, but with the same basic principles in mind.
So how is the quality and content of this five-disc DVD set? Well let's start out with the packaging and work our way through the entire five-disc set.
This is a very attractive cover with David executing a technique against an attacker armed with a training knife (we can't be to careful about training safely with a partner) and the cover of his related book on defenses against weapons; Krav Maga Weapon Defenses: The Contact Combat System of the Israel Defense Forces
on the cover in the lower left hand corner. I thought this was a nice touch especially since I would highly recommend that you purchase this book to go along with this DVD set. However, if you arent' familiar with the basics of Krav Maga, I would highly recommend that you purchase the following two books and DVD set first in order to build your foundation of empty handed skills first before attempting the techniques shown in this five-disc DVD set.Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-DefenseAdvanced Krav Maga: The Next Level of Fitness and Self-DefenseMastering Krav Maga (Volume I) 6 DVD Set -- Self-Defense (Beginner to Advanced)
Having the books will supplement the DVD's nicely and will help immensely with getting the techniques down correctly.
Each individual DVD fit snugly inside the case and I had absolutely no issues with loose or damaged discs because they weren't secure in the case. This normally isn't much of an issue when you already have them home and they are stored on a shelf, but this is a major issue before you receive it in the mail. In this case, each individual disc was very secure and did not become loose during shipping. This is primarily due to the very well designed case in which they are contained.
Each disc covers a wide variety of advanced techniques for defending yourself from an attacker armed with a variety of weapons ranging from; knives, sticks, bats, chains, rifles, handguns, chairs, etc. Pretty much anything someone might try and use against you. Very solid information.
I have to say that I really thought there was a lot of high-quality information contained within this five-disc set. However, I would have to advise anyone interested in purchasing this DVD set to make sure that they have a solid foundation of the basic skills and techniques in Krav Maga before attempting these more advanced defenses and disarms against an attacker armed with a weapon. If you don't, that could be a recipe for disaster. Like David continually emphasizes throughout these discs, you can't make a mistake when dealing with an attacker with a weapon. Well, you shouldn't really make any mistakes with an attacker whether they have a weapon or not, but there are usually a few more options available to you when the attacker is unarmed rather than armed. In any case, always try to avoid a potential confrontation and when you can't, always make sure that you go home safe to your family by whatever means necessary. So with that being said,...
There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't immediately purchase this five-disc set, view it in its entirety several times, although admittedly don't do it all at once as it can be a bit overwhelming to view all in one sitting, and then add those skills learned into your own repertoire of self-defense techniques and skills.
1. Sometimes, but not that often, the sound fades in and out depending upon what techniques are being demonstrated and the effects they have on the clip-on mike that David has on for the audio portion of the filming. As in my previous review, my recommendation would have been to use a boom mike the next time to eliminate this slightly annoying audio problem. Nobody listened to me on this one!
Please remember that this takes absolutely nothing away from the content, but it does get a little annoying from time-to-time.
2. Unlike on the previous DVD set, with the exception of the large amounts of text at the beginning of each disc, the text that appears on screen does stay on screen long enough to give the viewer time to read the entire thing. It was very nice to see that this had been corrected from the previous DVD set.
Those are my only negative remarks or concerns with this five-disc set. Like I said, very trivial and takes absolutely nothing away from the quality of information provided on each disc.
Like I have said before, and will continue to say, David Kahn is obviously a very talented Krav Maga stylist and an even more impressive Krav Maga instructor. He is very articulate and easy to understand and teaches from experience and actual understanding of the techniques being demonstrated and not from theory and supposition, which unfortunately seems to be quite prevalent in some organizations and styles. I highly recommend this five-disc set starring David Kahn and the following four books, three of which were written by David Kahn, while the other was written by the founder of Krav Maga himself, Imi Lichtenfeld.Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-DefenseAdvanced Krav Maga: The Next Level of Fitness and Self-DefenseKrav Maga Weapon Defenses: The Contact Combat System of the Israel Defense ForcesKrav Maga: How to Defend Yourself Against Armed Assault
