5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the great books in the history of sailing, October 10, 2014
This review is from: Down Channel (Paperback)
This is one of the great books in the history of sailing. A pioneer cruising sailor who was never happier than when things were toughest. R.T. McMullen first headed out in 1850 and was still at it 42 years later when he died at the helm while singlehanding. In this collection of sea stories, he laid down a personal philosophy of vigorous yacht cruising that he summarized in the phrase, “my hard sailing habits.” He loved a hard beat to windward in a strong breeze, an activity that he called “terrible but very grand.” McMullen memorably said of good sailing that it “is not unlike the pleasure human nature has in of successfully gathering roses off thorns.” There may be the occasional bloody finger, but there are great rewards.

This review is from: Bach (Audio CD)
A review not of the disk, but of the description that, oddly, lacks a listing. When I know what's on the CD, I'll consider buying it

5.0 out of 5 stars Walter Lord and the Historian's Tasks, July 22, 2013
Anybody who has read Walter Lord knows he was passionate about both facts and style. He wanted his books - whose common theme was ordinary people in extraordinary situations - to be truthful and also entertaining. In this autobiography assembled from his writings and interviews, he explains how he pulled off this difficult trick as he tells the stories behind best-sellers such as "A Night to Remember" (about the Titanic), "Day of Infamy" (Pearl Harbor), and "Incredible Victory" (the battle of Midway). He takes us into archives, and he says how he wrestled with the task of grabbing the reader's attention and affection. Every book was different. "In `A Night to Remember,' you hit the iceberg by page two. In `Day of Infamy,' I needed to build up to what happened, ending with the drama of the event." Besides wonderful stories about great events, "The Way it Was" offers instructive (and entertaining) insights into the writer's trade.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great man's great story, July 25, 2000
The world's most successful yacht designer and a superstar in the sport of sailing, Olin Stephens writes the story of his long life around boats. There's much here to interest sailors -- including stories of the America's Cup and other key races -- as well as a lot that's controversial about racing, racing rules, Dennis Conner, and the Cup. Olin sailed in two Cup winners, designed six of them, and designed and raced winners of other major races.
This is also the story of a fascinating, sensitive, and humble man, as you can see in the opening sentences: "I was lucky; i had a goal. As far back as I can remember I wanted to design fast boats."
Engagingly written and beautifully published, this is a book for any sailor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep this book with your Bible, December 1, 1999
I am giving copies of this wonderful guide to reflection and private devotion to several friends and family members. A beautifully published collection of almost 90 great sermons -- some familiar, others not so -- it ranges from the Sermon on the Mount to words of John Paul II, Desmond Tutu, Billy Graham, and Peter Gomes. Extremely helpful are the excellent introductions by the editors and the thorough index, which allows finding readings for special seasons and occasions like Advent, Lent, and marriage.
