4.0 out of 5 stars The Small Unit Count, July 19, 2008
This is transitional Count Basie. Recorded in 1950 and early 1951, Basie was ending his recording tenure with RCA Victor and soon to sign on with Norman Granz. These 8 man units were an economical necessity as the big band 16 man units began to disappear. The first four tracks were the last recordings Basie made with RCA Victor. This first octet reflected his swing roots with Harry Edison, Dickie Wells and Freddie Green on board. Georgie Auld and Gene Ammons handle the reeds.
The next 13 tracks reflect a more modernistic trend as players like Buddy DeFranco, Serge Chaloff, Wardell Gray, Buddy Rich and Clark Terry provide the bulk of the solo spotlight. The solid rhythm of the Count and Freddie Green are solidly behind everything along with Jimmy Lewis on string bass and Gus Johnson taking over for Rich.
The last four tracks recorded in April of 1951 bring back the big band sound with new arrangements by Buster Harding and the promise of things to come. Basie would sign on with Norman Granz and the "New Testament" band would made their first studio recordings in January of 1952. This is the first cutting of Neal Hefti's "Little Pony" and features a swinging reading by Wardell Gray. Thanks to Ocium Records (Spain) for reissuing this material in a chronological order showing how Basie's small group thinking progressed in the short span of one year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Herb, Lorraine together again, July 18, 2008
This 2-CD set represents the complete recorded output of husband Herb (alto sax) and wife Lorraine (piano) Geller on the EmArcy (Mercury Recording Co.) label. The Gellers (36024), Herb Geller Sextette (36040)
& Herb Geller Plays (36045). The Sextette has Conte Candoli on trumpet and Mel "Iggy" Vines on tenor sax. The various string bass players are John Simmons, Curtis Counce, Red Mitchell & Leroy Vinnegar. Drummers are: Roy Harte, Lawrence Marable, Mel Lewis & Bruz Freeman. The first 4 numbers were originally recorded on the Imperial label in 1953 for a 45rpm EP.
This album is a companion to a previous Fresh Sounds disc issued in 1992, Lorraine Geller Memorial (now out-of-print) which included the Imperial session and her only LP album, a piano trio issued on the Dot label. It also featured three numbers from a live TV show "Stars Of Jazz."
Herb and Lorraine created a distinctive harmonic quality between their two instruments.
Be forewarned, these import recordings have a nasty habit of going out-of-print fast. It's great to see some of the lesser known jazz figures honored with well prepared CD albums. Lorraine Geller passed away suddenly in 1958.

3.0 out of 5 stars Blue Stompin' - Hal Singer with Charlie Shavers, November 11, 2006
This review is from: Blue Stompin (Audio CD)
Recorded in Hackensack, N.J. on February 20, 1959, this is the only recording Hal Singer made for Prestige and one of the few pure jazz recordings in his career. A tenor player better known for his R & B style, he and the great trumpet player, Charlie Shavers have made a very listenable session. With Ray Bryant on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. When Bob Weinstock created his Swingville label, Blue Stompin' became a Swingville album until the label was discontinued in the mid '60's. Not reissued again until this CD came out in 1994. Good listening swingin' jazz, with Charlie Shavers really pumpin' it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Debut album for both pianists, November 11, 2006
This review is from: Piano: East/West (Audio CD)
Hampton Hawes first recording date as a leader. Recorded in Los Angeles, December, 1952. A 10" Vantage album was released first but disappeared almost immediately. Prestige released this as a 10" LP in 1955. Freddie Redd's Introducing the Freddie Redd Trio was recorded in Hackensack, N.J. by Rudy Van Gelder and released as a 10" LP in 1954. Combined on one 12" LP in 1956 as Piano East, Piano West. It was re-issued on the New Jazz label in 1963 as "Movin'". By 1965 it had disappeared from the catalog. Re-issued with the East,West title by Fantasy's OJC label it came out on CD in 1991.

The Hampton Hawes set is joyful California sound with drummer Larry Bunker playing some great vibraphone.

The Freddie Redd side is typical post-bop piano with a large nod to Bud Powell's style. This was actually a pretty obscure record but the musicality of both artists proved to be very promising.

Hawes was signed up by Lester Koenig's Contemporary label and Freddie Redd by the Blue Note label. These were the only sessions they recorded for Prestige as leaders.
