5.0 out of 5 stars A DARKLY COMEDIC WARP-SPEED JOURNEY INTO DESPERATION AND NIHILISM, November 15, 2014
This film is quite a little freak show, and it succeeds because of a wonderful cast, an excellent screenplay and creative direction - plus, surprises just keep on comin'! If you like ultra-dark humor that crescendoes into absurdist violence, then this is your kind of movie. I loved it - and apparently, many people did at numerous film festivals around the world, where it won Best Film and Best Ensemble Cast.

5.0 out of 5 stars PROBABLY THE MOST POWERFUL BRITISH DRAMA SERIES I HAVE EVER SEEN - UNMISSABLE!, September 28, 2014
This review is from: Broadchurch: Season 1 (DVD)
This is an epic, stellar, long, sprawling, spectacular, brilliant and visceral viewing experience. One does not coolly observe the town of Broadchurch's reaction to a child's murder and the subsequent investigation - rather, one feels it passionately in their heart and in their gut. I can't recall the last time I was moved so emotionally and cathartically by a TV mystery. It's no wonder it won BAFTA's Best Drama Series Award for 2014. BRAVO!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT ONE-OF-A-KIND FILM THAT PACKS A WALLOP!, August 13, 2014
This review is from: Locke (DVD)
I had no idea what to expect from "Locke" and I'm glad - I love being surprised by cinema. I never watch trailers or read sections of reviews that describe the story or the plot. Once I find out that a particular film has been recommended by someone I trust... well, I'll take it from there, thank you very much. It took me only a few minutes to enter into the world of "Locke" and when I did, I was hooked. Everything about this 85-minute "chamber piece" of a movie is absolutely superb. It's what cinema should be - a beautiful blend of screenplay, cinematography, musical score, acting and editing. Kudos to the entire cast and crew - especially, of course, Steven Knight and Tom Hardy. The emotional impact of this simple film blows away a thousand Hollywood big-budgeted CGI-bloated action extravaganzas. If you truly love the essence of cinema, do yourself a favor and watch "Locke"!

5.0 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT "YOU ARE THERE" RE-CREATION OF THE FIRST PERFORMANCE OF BEETHOVEN'S SYMPHONY NO. 3 (THE "EROICA"), May 30, 2014
This review is from: Eroica (DVD)
An absolute MUST-SEE (and HEAR) film for all music lovers - of all genres! (Who knew that the audience had lunch between the 2nd and 3rd movements?!) Walking around (and among... and between...) the musicians as they were playing this great symphony must have been an eye (and ear!) -opening experience for those present. And Papa Haydn's comments after the symphony concluded are priceless - and very prescient! My only quibble is that the orchestra doesn't play the repeat of the first movement exposition (which definitely WOULD have been played at the first performance.) I imagine the producers thought that it was a few extra minutes in this movie that wouldn't be missed... well, shame on them! Anyway, Sir John Eliot Gardiner's tremendous Beethoven Symphony cycle (with ALL the repeats!) with this same superb orchestra is also available as an Archiv 5-CD box set on Amazon for a ridiculously low price. Buy it - and listen in awe and wonder! Beethoven: The Symphonies

5.0 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING FILM THAT PUTS THE VIEWER THROUGH AN EMOTIONAL "MEAT-GRINDER", April 28, 2014

This movie came highly recommended and I can see why - it's inspired on every cinematic level. However, it's not an easy film to watch - but stay with it and it'll be well worth your time and effort. Because of the British dialects, the English subtitles were essential for me to closely follow the screenplay (one of the great benefits of watching it at home on DVD.) An intensely cathartic experience and a brilliant directorial debut from Paul Andrew Williams. It'll have you searching for superlatives afterwards - a must-see!

5.0 out of 5 stars AN OUTRAGEOUS AND BRILLIANT FILM ABOUT BEING IN RECOVERY - BUT NOT WORKING THE PROGRAM, April 23, 2014
This review is from: Crave (DVD)
People who are in recovery for various addictions - in this film it's alcoholism - know that it's not enough to just attend 12-Step meetings, but to actually work the program every day. A person in recovery knows (or should know) that the main problem of addiction is in his/her mind and its defective, destructive, out-of-control thinking which will relentlessly continue unless that person experiences a profound psychological and spiritual change. In this film, our "hero" pays lip service to his recovery from alcoholism, but is obviously NOT working the program. Instead, he continues to "live in his head" and is in obvious denial - and defiance - about his condition. He is constantly indulging his extremely vivid, bizarre and overwhelmiingy self-centered and violent imagination. The scene where he attends an AA meeting and is so resentful of the couple sitting in front of him that he acts out what he's REALLY thinking is priceless - and hysterical! Unfortunately, viewers who are not in a recovery program or who have no first-hand knowledge of the plight of the alcoholic or addict will probably be unable to relate to this movie at all. However - as extreme and over-the-top as the storyline is - this film rings true of what the results of NOT working the program can be. The title itself, "Crave", is not about the desire for alcohol or drugs, but about the perverse addiction to insane thinking - which WILL ultimately lead to insane and tragic behavior. Most other films about alcoholism - "The Lost Weekend", "Leaving Las Vegas", "Flight", etc., show the destructive behavior of the ACTIVE alcoholic. This movie has quite a different spin - it shows the destructive behavior of the DRY alcoholic who's NOT working the program. Highly recommended for EVERYONE in recovery!

5.0 out of 5 stars A DELIBERATELY-PACED, ALMOST "LYRICAL" SUPERNATURAL HORROR FILM THAT BUILDS TO A SHOCKING CLIMAX, March 21, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fortune Cookie Prophecies (DVD)
This is a very well-crafted old-school horror movie featuring a small but excellent cast, sensitive direction, fine cinematography, a complex and interesting story line and a gorgeous musical score. Instead of displaying numerous over-the-top shocking blood and gore scenes that seem to be essential in most contemporary horror films, this movie instead relies upon character development, a thorough story exposition, and a slow-building tension that finally reaches its climax in the penultimate scene. This is old-fashioned horror in the style of "The Innocents" (1961) and "The Haunting" (1963). Horror viewers who are so inured to slam-bang killings and a myriad of CGI effects are probably not going to appreciate this film. It would be like a heavy-metal junkie suddenly listening to chamber music - the subtleties and nuances of expression would most likely be lost on them. But for those horror fans whose senses have not been totally dulled by absurd exploitation cinema, this movie will be a real treat. I must say I found it very refreshing, and certainly containing enough creeps and scares to satisfy my horror-lust.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY ADDICTING!, March 5, 2014

I wish there were one thousand miniatures in this book instead of just one hundred. I can't remember when I had so much fun playing over chess games. Considering every game is under ten moves, it's amazing how much trouble - even masters! - can get into in the opening. Some of these game-ending 'killer' moves are truly astonishing. Your tactical ability has to improve after reading this book. And the Kindle format is superb - there's a diagram for each and every move.. Plus, the author's wit keeps his brief discussions of the moves, games and players quite entertaining. A must-read for all chess players!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE RATING IS FOR THE FILM ONLY - THIS ITEM HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED, January 19, 2014
Yes, this movie takes one on a VERY surreal journey. I had heard so much about the film and I finally saw it many years ago when it was broadcast on 'Turner Classic Movies'. I still remember how puzzling it was as it started, yet it was absolutely mesmerizing - and then it began to creep the hell out of me! I'm SO glad it's being released as a DVD/Blu-ray Combo - now everyone can finally see what all the fuss is about. Burt Lancaster was probably the only Hollywood star at that time who could have played this role - his performance is amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars UNIQUE, INDESCRIBABLE AND HALLUCINATORY - IT MUST BE "HEARD" TO BE BELIEVED!, December 13, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Berberian Sound Studio (DVD)
I began watching this movie last night as innocently as Mr Gilderoy, the film's main character (amazingly portrayed by Toby Jones), entered the sound studio of the title. Being one of the UK's best audio mixers and Foley Artist extraordinaire, he was personally chosen and hired by the legendary Italian director, Signor Santini, as the chief sound engineer for his new film - but it's not a horror film, it's a "Santini film". (Cue Rod Serling's voice.) Mr Gilderoy is unknowingly about to enter a new dimension of sight and sound, of mind and perception, of fear and imagination, a trip into - "The Berberian Sound Studio Zone". (I miss that guy!) Yes, I was also swept away by this 'sonic tsunami' which gradually yet inexorably unfolded and ultimately crescendoed, leaving me on one hell of a frightening ride! When I woke up this morning, my first thought was just how absolutely brilliant this film is - on so many different levels. A thoroughly first-rate job by the entire cast and crew, and a winner of numerous film festival awards. If you like horror, you will LOVE this movie - just make sure to keep your ears (and your mind) wide open!
