5.0 out of 5 stars Transformers: The Movie - 20th Anniversary Special Edition, August 16, 2006
This is the release of the Transformers animated motion picture in celebration of it's 20th anniversary as well as a prelude to the release of the Transformers Live action motion picture that will be released in 2007. Let us take a look at the details of this dvd release which will help buyers in making the choice as to whether or not to make this film part of their dvd library.

Firstly, this dvd is released by Sony BMG Music Entertainment, as therefore those who might be expecting a dvd release of the animated film together with the live action film later in 2007 will be sorely disappointed as the property doesn't belong to the same distributor.

Secondly, this dvd release is a 2 disc release featuring three versions of the feature film, commentary tracks and interviews, a sneak peak at the live-action movie.

A breakdown of the dvd details are as follows :

*Brilliantly remastered and color-corrected

*16x9 widescreen presentation, which has not been seen anywhere since the movie was in theatres twenty years ago

*Full screen edition as well

*Commentary tracks

*Interviews with director Nelson Shin, story consultant Flint Dille and voice actress Susan Blu

*Autobot Matrix of Knowledge Presentation: Truly showcasing the pop culture phenomenon that is The Transformers, Sony BMG has created a special version of the film for the DVD release.

*The `Autobot Matrix of Knowledge' will feature trivia and fun facts about the movie itself, the Transformers brand, and the pop culture references in which Transformers has been spoofed/tributed. Approximately one hundred fun facts will show up on screen throughout the movie. Many of the factoids were provided by fans through a special DVD site created by Sony BMG to solicit input--marking the first time that the huge

Transformers fan base has ever been asked to participate in the creation of a Transformers home entertainment release.

*Original commercials for the toy line and movie

*Behind-the-scenes sneak peak at next summer's highly anticipated Transformers live action movie event. The special feature segment on the DVD will include comments from Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg who share their vision and passion for Transformers

*Collectible `transforming' cover

My personal view is that for this price, and the amount of special features thrown in, this dvd is a real bang for your buck. If you are a Transformers fan, this is a must buy. If you wanna have a Transformers history lesson and get hyped up before the movie release, this is also a worthy consideration.

If you belong to none of the people in the category above, you might wanna stay away. But this is darn good entertainment whichever way you look at it. This deserves 5 stars, no doubt!

One thing to note from this release - there is no DTS soundtrack on this release, which has disappointed and even angered a lot of fans.... Benchmarking from the Lord of the Rings extented dvd releases, this is an ommission that trully expected... Be mindful.... Never the less, this is a strong release, from a director who understands what a dvd presentation should be. Place this 1 on your christmas wishlist!

3.0 out of 5 stars Maid to Scare.... vIDEO PROBELM With the dvd... STAY AWAY from this release!!!!, July 31, 2006
This review is from: The Maid (DVD)
This is a film that was produced in Singapore, where my inital thought, that this film just wanted to capitalise on the current unstoppable flow of horror films that seem to follow from the asian countries. Add to that a title that seems even more tacky... I wasn't expecting much... But i was indeed in for a shock.....

The Maid; like it's title, is a tale that is centered around a domestic helper, aged 18, who has travelled to the Philippines to Singapore, in hope to earn money so as to provide a better life for her family back home. Situation is such that money is urgently required to save her ill brother back home.

She is employed by an elderly couple, Mr and Mrs Teo who have a mentally-handicapped son Ah Soon. The relationship between all of them is good, and all seems to go well.

In chinese mythology, the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar is widely considered the Hungry Ghost festival - when the gates of hell swing open and for 30 days, the dead walk among the living. There are some rules during these months that are praticsed during these months amoung most... of which include - not to turn your head when some1 taps or calls your name over the shoulder... Lot of other rules are also mentioned, and most of these have been brushed off as Old wives tale...

The maid (Alessandra De Rossi) brushes them off, and unfortuantely, she gets entangled into the ghostly world....

The acting is decent, with my hat going out to Alessandra De Rossi who makes her performance very believable. But what makes this movie a regular scarefest is the fact that the director is trying too hard to scare us that the scares all seem too rehearshed. This film has a very decent premise, and the acting an't too bad... But i would suggest a rental for all those interested, before committing a purchase, as this is a film for only the acquired taste.

Dvd wise, Tartan issues the regular stuff-along with Mandarin Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Surround tracks with a few trailers of it's upcoming movie selections - English subtitles will be available....

******** I have just recieved word that the dvd presentation has a very serious problem with it. For some reason Tartan has tried to stretch what appears to be a 1.85:1 ratio into about a 2.35:1. Also the image is non-anamorphic. For this alone.... i suggest you skip the release!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars An absolute gulity pleasure !!!, July 28, 2006
Review

A gang of Southern California surfers tear up the waves, while enjoying the sun, sand and the sea. But in their spare time they also double up as Bank robbers and commit their crimes masked as American presidents. The gang led by Bodhi (Patrick Swayze)have been making some serious hits.

Finally the law in the form of FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) and his partner, Pappas (Gary Busey)suspect the sand lovers and decide to infiltrate them by going undercover.

Throw in skydiving, some pretty boy male bonding action and a little bit of love into this cocktail, this turns out to be a pretty decent film. The acting is saved with good pacing and a commendable script; which is not as predictable as 1 might think.

It's worth a watch, definetly!!!

The Dvd

The film itself will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with both English Dolby Digital 5.1 and 4.0 Dolby Surround tracks.

Extras will include deleted scenes (Holistic Fitness With Agent Pappas, Agent Johnny Utah Thinks He Can Surf, Tyler Saves Johny From The Waves, Penetration Of The Social Infrastructure, Tyler & Johnny Spend Time Alone In The Water, A Basic Hit & Run, Tyler Accuses Johnny Of Using Her, and Johnny & Bodhi Talk About Robbing Banks), an It's Make or Break featurette, a Ride the Wave featurette, an Adrenaline Junkies featurette, an On Location: Malibu featurette, a still gallery, and three theatrical trailers

++ Though the inital dvd loses the DTS track.. the DTS track was horrendous in the 1st place...So for me personally, i'd rather not have it....

SYNOPSIS

A rogue wave capsizes a luxury cruise ship in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, a small group of survivors find themselves unlikely allies in a battle for their lives. Preferring to test the odds alone, career gambler John Dylan (Josh Lucas) ignores captain's orders (Andre Braugher) to wait below for possible rescue and sets out to find his own way to safety. What begins as a solo mission soon draws others as Dylan is followed by a desperate father (Kurt Russell) searching for his daughter (Emmy Rossum) and her fiancé (Mike Vogel), a young couple who hours before couldn't summon the courage to tell him they were engaged and now face much graver challenges.

Along the way they are joined by a single mother (Jacinda Barrett) and her wise-beyond-his-years son (Jimmy Bennett), an anxious stowaway (Mia Maestro) and a despondent fellow passenger (Richard Dreyfuss) who boarded the ship not sure he wanted to live but now knows he doesn't want to die. Determined to fight their way to the surface, the group sets off through the disorienting maze of twisted steel in the upside-down wreckage. As the unstable vessel rapidly fills with water each must draw on skills and strengths they didn't even know they possessed, fighting against time for their own survival and for each other.

REVIEW

Poseidon comes from Wolfgang Petersen, who has made quite a few water bound films that are very good. As such, i was expecting Poseidon to be somewhat a blend of a meaty storyline as well as good CGI effects. But as it played out on screen, it was not that at all...It was bad... bad enough to arouse only the popcorn action hungry moviegoer who doesn't mind the knowing what will play out on screen next....the film gets 3 stars just because it has a few unexpected sequences (just a few) and has lots of CGI thrown in... If you truly would like to enjoy this movie, my suggestion is to place all expectations out the door and watch it. It may be a decent watch, but for me, it'll be nothin more than a CGI exihibition on film..

This is the re-release of Brazil by Criterion, which stars Robert DeNiro, Jonathan Pryce, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins and many more, and directored by Terry Gilliam.... this is the ulitmate movie that all science fiction buffs must own...

5.0 out of 5 stars pARK cHAN wOOK's LaDY vENGEANCE, June 17, 2006
This review is from: Lady Vengeance (DVD)
This is the last installment of Park Chan Wook's theme linked Vengeance trilogy - the first being Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and then OLdbOY....

Synopsis -

Geum-ja (Lee Young-ae), in her teen years is thrust into the spotlight when she is arrested and charged for the abduction and murder of a six year old boy, a crime she did not commit. The killer is Mr Baek (Old Boy's Choi Min-sik) framed her. While in jail, she gets allies to her cause for revenge and upon her release she takes her time to play out her fantasy of vengeance and the movie takes us through that journey as the director blends in a pespective of vengeance that is rather different from the last 2 films.

Review -

For fans of style , you will get your appetites filled as they are beautiful sets are littered all throughout the film. The violence is built up till the end when it erupts on screen. If you are a fan of OLdbOY, and that's the reason you are gonnna catch it; my suggestion is, do not expect an OLdbOY sequel or anything that resembles OLdbOY, as you will be sorely disappointed... Enter this film with the impression that is a whole new film experience and you will enjoy it......But mind you, this is a wonderful effort and a fantastic conclusion to the revenge trilogy....

The DVD -

2:35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen

Korean Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Surround tracks

English and Spanish subtitles

Theatrical trailer, and some preview trailers

The rest of the extras are still not released.... I will update them when i recieve them..

But it's been confirmed that the fade to black version of Lady Vengeance(which appears in the Korean Special edition) is not available here.

Ps: Please note that the Korean distributors of the movie have only released a 2 disc special edition and there is a HK single and double disc edition available. If there are anyone mentioning a Korean single disc edition - there is no such thing and they are not legal versions, beware such sellers!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars NON -ANAMORPHIC BS !!!!!, June 9, 2006
Allow me to apologise, my original rating is 0 stars, but for some reason AMAZON.COM doesn't allow that....

When i first heard about the release of the 1977 version, i know that it was a smile on most STAR WARS fans who craved the original trilogy in the way they remembered it.

But when the details came about that the original 1977 version will be non anamorphic dvds, it was disappointing..

But what added fuel to the fire was the offical statement released by LUCASFILMS, saying that we do not have the offical prints and they are in a bad state....

Most classics were originally in bad shape, like WIZARD OF OZ, KING KONG and GONE WITH THE WIND, but look at them all shine on dvd today. LUCASFILMS claim they are at the forefront of dvd technology and movie making, but this does cast a doubt on their abilites....

If other studios can do it, why not for a set of films that generations have grown up loving..Passing a sub standard package for the sake of increasing the company's revenue is rather unsettling....

But i can bet you, LUCASFILMS will release the original versions in full glory when HD becomes more of the industry norm.

Please don't support the purchase of these dvds and send a clear message to the studios, we pay for quality...
