4.0 out of 5 stars Best, August 18, 2006
The American recording is the best of the show as a whole... Glen Close doesn't have a huge voice... so... satisfy yourself by getting recordings of the big songs from the other Normas...but if you are looking for a recording of the show... the American recording is tops. George Hearn? Judy Kuhn? C'mon. The Best. As a footnote... there were two major American tours... the first used recreations of the original broadway set and costumes designs... it starred Linda Balgord and it flopped. I still have the playbill from the Chicago stop. The Petula Clark toured in a scaled down version. So. There.

3.0 out of 5 stars Soars and Sinks, July 19, 2000
It is unfortunate that so much of the score has gone unrecorded, what was an untirely sung show is reduced to 40 some minutes of music. Dreamgirls is a wonderful piece of theater but in your home the songs have a tendency to sound very similar. This isn't how the score is written but with out the linking material and with everything blends more than is intended. With that said, there is little in Broadway history or music history for that matter that can match the pure brute strength of Jennifer Holliday's voice. Her "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." is not a song but an act of war. She rips the tears out of your eyes and never ceases to be amazing. Well worth it for Ms. Holliday's Tony Winning performance. If you enjoy "And I'm Telling..." check out My Favorite Broadway: Broadway's Leading Ladies...there's no match for Jennifer in live performance.

I think it's a shame more people don't appreciate Marianne for what she is. So honest. She bleeds for us...almost literally. On a Recent episode of "The List" Janis Ian nominated Marianne as one of the best female songwriters ever. This is reflected on most of the recording. Some songs do drone, but the first song Vagabond Ways seems to sum up Marianne's Career and I instantly connected. I got a bit lost in the middle but her collabortations with Irish Playwright/Poet Frank McGuiness where highly entertaining and thoughtful. Ms. Faithful's interpretation of Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song" seems definetive. All in all she seems more wise then she has before and that is communicated in her songs. Well Worth buying!
