As good as it gets. Antrim is a master. 6 of the 7 stories here strike me as unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold, imaginative debut, October 31, 2013
This review is from: Flatscreen: A Novel (Paperback)
After finishing Flatscreen, it has to be concluded that author, Adam Wilson, has a singularly disturbed and brilliant mind. His sense of humor is raunchy in the best way- there's an awareness and playfulness, and most importantly, a sense of empathy and pathos. With his central character, Eli, Wilson captures the awkward and terrifying period between adolescence and adulthood. After just a few pages, I found myself completely swept up in that mindset. The prose are lyrical and layered. After burning through my first reading of Flatscreen, I found myself picking it up again to catch all the brilliant turns of phrase and metaphor. Think: Sam Lipsyte, Gary Lutz, Thomas McGuane. Hell, think: Nabokov (he has that kind of dexterity.) Suffice to say, I'm excited to read whatever Wilson comes up with in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars every morning and night, November 11, 2010
This review is from: Silent Movies (Dig) (Audio CD)
every morning and night I've been listening to this record. Sometimes while reading, sometimes while sitting right up to the stereo and listening to all the beautiful subtleties of his phrasing. The record has a decidedly elegiac tone. In someways I expected more humor from a release titled Silent Movies, but I couldn't be happier with this record. It may be a touch more accessible than Saints although Saints has a lot of variation and is a masterpiece. This is a more brooding and hypnotic and romantic record. Ribot's brand of romanticism is not tender in the way that some like Nike Drake or Brad Mehldau can be, but is fiery and passionate in the way that Miles' playing or a Picasso painting can evoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome addition to the book of angels, September 17, 2008
I agree with most everything the other reviewers have said except for the rating. This disc is diverse and full of passion. I love the subtleties of so many of the tunes. Its so satisfying to hear mmw play within these structures. For me the one of the most welcome additions is medeski's piano playing. the piano sounds so good on the fourth track. I'm glad they didn't turn everything funky- some of the tunes demand a different rhythmic edge. It's not as elegant or quite as colorful as vol. 10, but energy, ideas, and interplay are all on display.
