2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Control, December 12, 2015
Just take a look at the product photos provided by the manufacturer, right here on Amazon: one can clearly see the digital readout is off by 1/16". This is an example of quality control being subservient to hasty manufacturing-to-distribution management. The product's saving grace is the the user can still use the tape measure itself, ignoring the digital readout, which begs the question: why not just buy a conventional measuring tape?

2.0 out of 5 stars So-So for a first showing...., December 7, 2015

It's OK, a typical B or C movie. It will soon end up at Goodwill - there will be no second viewing. Here's a better movie: "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring".

This review is from: Iron Cow of Zen (Paperback)
A golden gem of a little book on koan study. Albert Low clearly demonstrates an ability to elucidate that which is extremely difficult to elucidate, especially where it concerns koans.

1.0 out of 5 stars Verbose to the Extreme, December 7, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Two volumes? Unnecessary & verbose. Actually,
Yogananda indulges in endless rambling. He does make a few good points but he made the mistake of not stopping there. Instead, he saw a need to bore the reader with a grandiose opus. Why is that so necessary, why? Such a waste of intelligence.

Perfect guide for those Christian mystics (eg, so-called "Zen Christians") who might be adverse to reading Mumonkan or Lankavatara.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Glass of Water, November 12, 2015
Try holding a glass of water for 5 minutes. Not hard to do.
Now hold the same glass of water for one hour, without putting the glass down. Hmm.
Now hold that same glass of water for an entire day, without ever putting it down.
The burden becomes increasingly painful, even though the burden has not materially changed from the first moment one picked it up.

That is a visual picture of how most people handle stress management. The point is often we just have to learn to let go, or at least rest a while to get refreshed before picking up where we left. Most of us actually have to learn that small but important lesson.

Ossian's ride
Ossian's ride
by Sir Fred Hoyle

4.0 out of 5 stars A Brief Comparative Review......., July 1, 2015
This review is from: Ossian's ride (Hardcover)
I read this book over 50 years ago and, at that time, I found the book to be interesting. Over a year ago, I also read "Journey to the West", an ancient & epic tale written in China, about the travels of a Buddhist monk and his companions, especially, the hero, Monkey. Why would I bring that title up? Well, I consider "Ossian's Ride" and "Journey to the West" as two "really interesting" reads, but if I were to choose which one to read, I would invariably choose "Journey to the West". Now, why would I say that? Because, when I read "Journey.....", I actually smiled the whole time I read the novel. The story is so outlandish, yet entertaining. Yes, "Ossian....", too, is outlandish.......but I don't think people smile while they're reading it. But people will smile while they're reading "Journey....". But keep in mind one other interesting fact: I was around 12 years old when I read "Ossian......" and I was 64 years old when I read "Journey.......". Now there's something for you to think about!

Appearance and Reality: The Two Truths in the Four Buddhist Tenet Systems

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Supporting Document for In-Depth Buddhist Studies, April 23, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Excellent book on a couple of levels: especially for extensive Buddhist study, it helps explain one of the most enigmatic Buddhist tenets regarding existence & reality, plus (and this is my favorite), it's a small book and straight to the point; no rambling on-and-on for hundreds of pages (a common feature of many Tibetan Buddhist writings).
It is true: this book is written with a specific bent towards a Tantric (Tibetan) Buddhist perspective. Still, what does that matter? In the end, we want to get to the marrow of reality and, especially, what it means for our moment-to-moment experience; so what do we care if it's a Tibetan spin? And, anyway, if one takes all the different spins (Zen, Pure Land, Tantric, etc, etc), and brush away the smoke, you are left with the core Buddhist teachings, so forget any concerns. The book should be read while also reading Nagarjuna, Vimalarkiti or the Lankavatara Sutra in order to maximize its value in your study & meditation, since those writings frequently touch upon the subject of appearance & reality. In short: a good purchase.
