5.0 out of 5 stars A treat for musical theatre lovers, March 3, 2009
Kander and Ebb's autobiography Colored Lights, while a fine glimpse into their creative process, is not nearly as informative and interesting as this book. Thoroughly analyzing and covering their work for the theatre and creating unique portraits of each man (Kander being the warm, loving one and Ebb being acerbic and brash), this is a must read for musical theatre lovers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvelous craftsman, February 10, 2009
Oscar Hammerstein II's lyrics are among the most beloved in the world and his collaborations with composers such as Jerome Kern and Richard Rodgers were among the most successful in theatre history. People will be singing "Ol' Man River", "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'!", "If I Loved You", "Getting to Know You" and so many more for years and years to come. This tome includes every lyric Hammerstein wrote- nearly 450! The author, Amy Asch, has done a mervelous job compiling the lyrics and has writen insightful commentary on the man and the words he so brilliantly crafted.
Hammerstein was a supreme craftsman, not only as a lyric writer, but as a librettist, influencing and mentoring many theatre writers, most notably Stephen Sondheim. This book is a testiment to his greatness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liza, Liza, skies are blue!, February 10, 2009
This review is from: Liza's at the Palace (Audio CD)
Kudos to Liza Minnelli for this wonderful recording, her best work in years! One gets goosebumps listening to her sing all of the classic Kander and Ebb songs she made famous, but moreso listening to her recreation of the nightclub act of her godmother, Kay Thompson.
We had the chance to see Liza in December at the Palace Theatre and it was a truly memorable experience one never will forget. This recording does that brilliant performance justice. For Liza fans...well, you've probably bought it already. For music fans, give it a listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, August 28, 2008
Mr. Carter takes us back to the early 40s when Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers first embarked on the creation of the watershed musical, Oklahoma!. Using original music and lyric manuscripts, he paints an informative picture of the writing process. With materials from The Theatre Guild, he takes us back to the show's rehearsals, out of town tryouts and legendary opening night. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the musical theatre!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, August 28, 2008
There's a good reason why two of our finest lyric writers, Stephen Sondheim and Sheldon Harnick, use this fine rhyming dictionary. It's perfect! It is indeed complete and very, very thorough. A great buy for any poet, lyric writer or anyone who enjoys the English language!

Somewhere for Me - A Biography of Richard Rodgers
Somewhere for Me - A Biography of Richard Rodgers

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine biography of a musical genius, July 27, 2008
Secrest, a fine biographer (I enjoyed her book on Stephen Sondheim), now tackles Richard Rodgers, one of the greatest American composers ever and certainly a musical genius. The book is quite informative and paints vivid portraits of the dark, often cruel and (although stable) often drunk Rodgers, his homophobic and cruel horror of a wife Dorothy, his troubled early lyricist and friend Larry Hart, his second lyricist, the warm and wise Oscar Hammerstein ("Ockie" as friends and family called him), his two confused and rather neglected children, Mary and Linda, who simply wanted his love and attention and the other lyricists he worked less successfuly with- Martin Charnin, Sheldon Harnick and Stephen Sondheim.
Rodgers was a deeply complex man and is thoroughly analyzed in this book. Despite his rather strange and dark personality, he did indeed give much joy to the world with his superb music. Secrest certainly makes note of this as wlel. Worth reading for music fans, theatre fans and anyone intersted in a fascinating story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Expert Biography on a Great Songwriter, December 28, 2007
This book is just the biography Frank Loesser deserves. It analyzes his wonderful music very thoroughly, as well as his lyrics, which were always conversational and always expertly crafted.
However, he book does not get all that in depth regarding Mr. Loesser's personal life, which was certainly colorful being that he worked with talents such as Cy Feuer, Bob Fosse and most importantly, Abe Burrows as well as mentoring up and coming songwriters such as Jerry Herman, Richard Adler, Meredith Wilson and Stephen Sondheim. However, not conetrating on that very much doesn't make the book bad. The analyisis of his work makes up for it in spades. I can hardly wait for the other titles in this Yale Broadway Masters series to be released as Kander and Ebb, Kurt Weill and the other songwriters who will be written about in future volumes deserve equally exceptional biographies.

Broadway Babylon
Broadway Babylon

2.0 out of 5 stars Mindless and trashy, September 30, 2007
This review is from: Broadway Babylon (Hardcover)
A mix of rather humorous, sometimes outlandish, sometimes unbelieveable quotes from various Broadway personalities and stories about the Great White Way, Boze Hadleigh's book is rather trashy, but entertaining to read on a rainy day when there's nothing better to do.
The book spends much too much time on the topic of homosexuality and the horrible AIDS crisis. Of course, this topic cannot be ignored as much of Broadway's community consists of gay men and AIDS was a disease that killed an entire gerneration of brilliant talents, but much of this becomes redundant and sometimes sort of bitchy.
On one final note, you could find plenty of these stories and one liners in other books as well. For the David Merrick section, Hadleigh seems to use bits from Jerry Herman's lovely memoir Showtune and for the Michael Bennett section, repeats of stories from Ken Mandelbaum's book appear. This could be said for numerous other chapters. Honestly, if you'd like to spend some extra cash, buy those various books instead of this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grey Gardens: A work of art, September 26, 2007
Grey Gardens closed all but too quickly on Broadway. It was absolutley enchanting, thrilling, funny, sad and altogether, brilliant. The music of Scott Frankel, while not represented here, was inventive and complex, while being memorable and tuneful at the same time. The lyrics of Michael Korie, printed in this volume, were witty, moving and intricate. Doug Wright's libretto was absolutely stunning.
Thankfully, the libretto of the show has been released for our reading pleasure. What memories it brings back of this wonderful show and the performances of Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. Bravo to all involved!
