To Kill a Mockingbird (Harperperennial Modern Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars A priceless classic., June 2, 2015

The wise and feisty tone of the narration carries the story forward as you get to know the extraordinary Atticus Finch, Jem, Scout, and of course Boo Radley. Better than the movie . . . Perfect for any age of reader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still entertaining, May 1, 2015

This is one of the more shallow installments in the Banks series. Took a long time to get going, and the villain was obvious from the mid-pint of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotionally satisfying tale of love lost and found, again., February 8, 2015

Selasi's novel has the deeply satisfying narrative underpinnings of a traditional folktale beautifully rendered with all the raw emotional power of great poetry. Simply put, it' she story of an African-American family's struggle to understand themselves and each other, and to find love.

4.0 out of 5 stars what to become an agent for change? read this book!, November 9, 2014

Garbology, the study of the amazing amount of waste that proliferates modern societies, is a topic of which we all have personal experience. How many garbage cans and trash receptacles have you got tucked away in the corners of rooms, under desks and hidden in cabinets, awaiting the moment when you decide that a piece of paper, plastic, glass, or food is no longer of use to you? I count more than a dozen such conveniences in my own home! Now that I've read this book, my goal is to have just three: one for compostable food, one for recycling paper & glass, and one (the largest, unfortunately) for the stuff that I am slowly going to eliminate from our life: plastic, batteries, conventional light bulbs, mass-market cleaning products, and all the useless, space-hoarding, excess stuff we've accumulated during a lifetime of buying more than we need, want or can use. It's not much, but it's a start.

Harry Bosch Novels, The: Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight
Harry Bosch Novels, The: Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight
Offered by Hachette Book Group
Price: $17.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Three times thrilling!, May 17, 2014
Connelly doesn't disappoint. Even in 2014, the early Harry Bosch novels still deliver a thrill, and remind us of an era when LA was seething with discontent. This three-book "boxed set" is a great series, with a strong story arc. Both Harry's professional and personal lives are explored in these novels, and with the exception of only a few moments when the author indulges in some high-falutin' preaching about righteousness, the message of these novels is clearly on the side of justice and truth. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars An international tour de espionage, January 30, 2014

Pavane has penned a highly readable and enjoyable book. The pacing and the twists and turns of the plot(s) are enough to keep even the most jaded reader of espionage/cyber-shenanigans fiction alert and amply rewarded for the time spent in the pages of this remarkable first novel. Wish that Pavane's second novel, The Accident, was available . . . and plan to sit down and read it immediately when it is!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another "can't-put-it-down" gem from a master., October 26, 2013

Once again, Tony Hill and Carol Jordan have banded together to solve a seemingly unsolvable string of murders, with just the right amount of personal angst and self-discovery that makes this series so much fun to read. Glad to learn that Hill and Jordan May finally find happiness together! Looking forward to the next installment in this entertaining series.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Historical/Personal View of Pure, Classical, Traditional Pilates, June 30, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Peter Fiasca wants you to know that not all Pilates studios and instructors are created equal. In this informative book, Fiasca paints a picture of what a Pure Classical Traditional Pilates (his words) studio and instructor should be like and makes his recommendations for ways that the business of promoting this "brand" of Pilates instruction and teacher-training should be conducted. His passion for his subject is evident, while his contempt and criticism of people who practice "derivative" brands of Pilates is glaringly apparent. This book might be interesting for someone who is considering training to become a Pilates instructor, but is not going to be worthwhile for a student of the Pilates method in general.

What a great romp this book turned out to be. Thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, and the writing. This was a great Whispersinc experience, too. The Audiobook edition is very well done.
