5.0 out of 5 stars A pro says yes to these!, June 22, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Fantastic product. VERY clear sound through all registers. Good at blocking out sound, but not a tight seal. (I travel with them and love them on an airplane!). These are very durable and sound SO much better than many headphones that cost 2-3 times as much.

Highly recommended. Excellent value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent storytelling!, June 22, 2015

This Iron Man run made me pay attention back in the early 1980s when they were on the stands. I loved the eye-grabbing art and I enjoyed the plotlines. Re-reading this was as fun as when I read them the first time through, all those many years ago.

For you Iron Man movie fans, this collection gives you the "vibe" of Tony Stark that the movies employ. If you are a casual comics fan but love the movies, you will probably enjoy this book.

Be forewarned - it's thick and heavy! It's put together solidly and the colors look beautiful. Cover art is included in the body of the collection.

Enjoy some 1970s goodness!

Collects the brief Joker comics series.

SO much good ole' 1970's fun. The stories are on the light side, although a few darker moments creep in.

This is not the grim-n-gritty Joker of the 1980s and beyond. This is not quite the late 1960s cartoonish Joker either. If you are a fan of the 1970's DC vibe, you'll enjoy this collection.

Reproduction is excellent, book is solidly made. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful cafeteria advice. A horrible premise for a book., June 22, 2015
The failed "Self-Esteem Movement" yielded a generation of children so hyper-sensitive to criticism and so averse to shame that they became nearly impossible to teach. The parents and therapists are, naturally, the ones to blame for this movement and the entitled generation that they raised.

This 1993 book is a proponent of the Self-Esteem movement. (If you love yourself first, if you feel great about yourself first, everything else will benefit from that process.) The Portable Therapist proposes, albeit surreptitiously, to address very complicated issues by dedicating two-to-three pages of analysis. Imagine, "Why am I depressed," being addressed in two to three pages.

If you are seeking out a nonsensical historical artifact of armchair therapy, then this is your book. If you have an interest in being horrified by statement after statement asserting that Self-Esteem is the real path to healing, then you'll be satisfied. If you want to read two-to-three pages about serious issues (such as depression being treated with "snap out of it and get to therapy" as advice), then purchase this text.

Otherwise, let this book fade into obscurity where it belongs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Increasingly annoying with each listen, April 26, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pushbutton Parfait (Audio CD)
Some albums get better over time the more one listens to them. This album, unfortunately, seems worse with each passing listen.

If one takes time listen to Raymond Scott's music (which this album is name only) it can be viewed as cute, witty, irreverent, or even ridiculous. It is not, however, simply a pastiche of sounds devoid of substantive ideas. This album is that; devoid of genuine ideas.

With one exception: it seems to be the mission of these musicians to "out-cute" Raymond Scott.

A particularly egregious example is their re-imagining of the tune Oil Gusher. The composers seem to have written this track with annoying the listener at the front of their collective mind.

If you are looking for the genuine article, which is well worth the time spent, go find the original "quintette" tapes that are on CD, or enjoy the Beau Hunks Sextet's modern-day versions. (By the way, the original tracks feature Johnny Williams on drums. He was the father of the legendary film composer John Williams.)

Those tracks have musical integrity, honesty, and are brilliantly executed as opposed to the material on "Pushbutton Parfait."

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone (quite technical), July 1, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book, but it's not for everyone.

The book is divided into four sections:

Part One, Background
Part Two, Choral Music
Part Three, The Symphonist
Part Four, Reception

If you are interested in reading biographical material about Bruckner's life and times, then a few of the 16 chapters are interesting. (Don't get me wrong, all of the writing is of the highest caliber.) But, if you cannot read music, then a lot of the book will be uninteresting. And, if you haven't studied music seriously - say, deep into college music theory - then a sizable portion of this book will be indecipherable to you.

If you are professional or highly educated musician, you will find a wealth of technical information here that will assist you in score study and research. You will find a few chapters with harmonic analysis and a few chapters with structural analysis.

As almost always with writings about Bruckner and his music, more than a few pages are dedicated to hermeneutics. Again, if this is your area of interest, then this book is for you.

So, once again, a sizable portion of the book is dedicated to the very technical craft of musical harmonic analysis replete with analysis and diagrams. If you enjoy this sort of thing, then by all means dive in!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT collection, June 4, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a long-time fan, having bought all of the issues in this collection off the stands as a kid.

Pros: Collection of great stories, sturdy spine, tight binding, should hold up for a long time. Colors look great, too. This is a great set for long-time fans or newbies.

Cons: HEAVY. This isn't an easily portable item. Take it to read on a plane at your peril!

The stories are entertaining... I would say they take a bit of a dip after issue 144, but they are far better than the confusing mess that the stories became in the 1990s! (Crotchety old man opinion here...hah!)

Happy reading!

Good things: Packaging is solid and compact. DVDs are pretty easily extracted, although one can rip the sleeves if one isn't careful!

Bad things: On two of the discs I couldn't get the "play movie" option to arise. The title menu kept replaying over and over with no options. (Couldn't hit "play movie" "special features" etc.) This COULD have been my older blue ray player, or it could be a sign of buggy discs.

Oh, and I think the BOTH the second and fourth movies are let downs. But, the star rating is for the package, not the movies.

While not perhaps a "luxury" item, these sheets are soft and comfortable. I would say they are a bit warm, so if you are sleeping in a warm room they might prove to make you pretty toasty! (I guess that's a plus or a minus depending on your preference.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Very unreliable, May 4, 2014
This is a very unreliable printer. I have owned HP Wide Format printers for years, and they really have messed this one up!

Reliability issues:
1. Will randomly stop feeding ink to paper. You then have to jump through lots of weird hoops to get the printer to use the ink it has.
2. Will randomly break fonts. Occasionally the printer will "forget" certain fonts and make up jibberish as a placeholder.
3. Will randomly decide you are out of ink, even though you've just put a new ink cartridge in.

There have got to be other options for a Wide Format Printer. Skip this one and look elsewhere.
