3.0 out of 5 stars Can't Move, Can't Die, Can't Enjoy an Error-Free Level, May 28, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While I love the Ghost option, I have problems on almost every level so far.

Lockups overall (including the main intro video introducing the Paladin team), becoming frozen in place with immortality and surrounded by attacking enemies and I can't die or reset. I've fallen and been blown into environment rooms & between walls that clearly are not where Sam should be: they have no real surface textures or usable exits. The controller disconnects with zoom shots on particular levels, and so on.

Grim and the hardware kid repeat the same intro dialog EVERY time...

This hardly seems a 4.5 star game.

From the solid storage box and thoughtful shipping sleeves for each stay, to the beautiful collar stays themselves, these are worth every penny. Strong and smoothly polished, they slide into the collar flawlessly and rest with a nice, not-too-heavy weight that feels perfect.

Great job guys & gals.

1.0 out of 5 stars If the Introduction is Any Guide..., October 7, 2013
...this book shows hideous incompetence with its subject matter.

Opening with incorrect paragraph structure, the very first page of the intro struck this reader with its number of dubious, unsupported, and/or fallacious claims, such as "Having opinions is how we define ourselves." Bzzzzt - Wrong! Even the specific opinions we hold are only used by some people some of the time to define some things ABOUT ourselves, typically with regard to some context.

The immediately following claims hint at what appears an arbitrarily drawn distinction between "differing" and "contradicting" opinions, but the distinction is never explained.

Apparent conflation of undefined "independent" with undefined "original" thoughts/opinions follows in turn, along with assertions about the right "to think and say what we really believe" about authorities. Such a naive view would not seem to hold up much based on recent test cases in the U.S. with Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning, and Edward Snowden where conditions internationally recognized as torture, death threats from Senators and Representatives, and general fury by the administration are easily observable by any paying attention. On and on the book goes like this.

The final straw for me came before the end of the second page where, it is claimed: "Human beings are born with a natural ability to reason logically." This is as uninformed and factually false as one can get, and quite offensive to those of us who respect the difficult, often dangerous work by many dedicated and brave scholars sacrificing over CENTURIES to bring the light of rational thought to the societies of the world which developed magical thinking based on hardwired instincts like language and analogy, which is why all ancient myths and religions reflect their local conditions, for example.

The introduction closes with "True critical thinking is about using good logic" which ranks on the informative scale near "True scotsmen are about eating good haggis", as the author seems unaware that one can use not merely good logic, but absolutely pure rationality with 100% error free logic, yet still be completely wrong, as history from the Fall of Rome to Anthropogenic Climate Change and financial crashes demonstrates.

Read The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark or Theory and Reality: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science (Science and Its Conceptual Foundations series) instead.

Browsing in a mall shop, and not really finding much that interested me. A member of the staff handed me this with the suggestion that it wasn't for everyone, but he liked it.

What a debt I owe him!

3.0 out of 5 stars Caution: May Cause Docking Problems, February 27, 2013
If you use docks or stations for synchronization, charging, home speakers, video screens, charging & audio while driving, etc., increasing the width of your phone may be problematic.

Careful repositioning, (weakening the adhesive, IMO) has allowed use of my main computer sync station without obstructing the camera...just barely. My particular iLogic and Logitech docks will not tolerate the CardNinja without torquing the connectors, however.

If your docks hold the phone with a mid-body bracket, (e.g.: for screen rotation), you may experience some issues. I've had to remove two brackets which with care & luck, will not damage dock or phone.

Not that Steam makes it easy to set the offline switches, but once Steam detects that IT wants to update something, AFAICT: all software associated with Steam will be completely disabled even with offline options set. Users are helpless to disable this malware.

Learn this on a flight from LAX to Shanghai without WiFi, and how pissed-off should purchasers be?

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars to Help Generate Interest..., October 22, 2012
...and I look forward to reading this book and updating with a real assessment.

Both the presentations at the 100YSS Symposium in Houston, Orlando, and the title of this book do give caution, however. Some kinds of Solar System development appear plausible with evolutionary advances in technology, but interstellar activities will require fundamental change in our understanding of physics to circumvent the light-speed limit. I suspect this book will be a collection of papers submitted to 100YSS in concert with the Houston Symposium. Can anyone confirm?

Based on statements made early in initiating the 100YSS Study and subsequent planning documents, it seemed clear to this consultant by February 2011 it was a troubled project. That's when I approached DARPA and NASA, urging adherence to appropriate practices which might give the project a chance of survival. David Neyland was lobbied in Orlando later that same year, and pleas continued with Icarus Interstellar and Dorothy Jemison Foundation leadership before and in Houston to take corrective action in light of many failure indicators. Waiver of all cost, including a normal 3-digits-per-hour fee was offered.

It now seems reasonably certain that neither resources nor commitment to prevent inevitable problems exist, with results which will profoundly sadden many whose dreams are with 100YSS success. Even I secretly hope to have made some hideous misjudgment of the group's chances.

Good management of organizations to succeed simply is not of interest at 100YSS, if the response to "Developing Faster than Light Technology - a Project Management Institute Based Approach" is any guide. YouTube videos (search "project management, starships and physics") assert that development of interstellar capability is so complex and difficult, it can only succeed with rigorous planning and other activities requiring the application of best practices in project management - hardly controversial among leading knowledge-based organizations.

Yet as an internationally published, leading expert on standards for successful delivery of transformative information systems, my presentation which received a quality rating of *zero* on a scale from 1 to 10, in contrast to a similar presentation developed in China and selected as the symposium keynote for a management event in Texas.

With this book title, linking in-system R&D with interstellar capability advancement is suggested, which should be formally justified. Mixing multiple goals in one project without clear and explicit justifications and planning adds uncontrolled risk.

Other perspectives and thoughts?

2.0 out of 5 stars No one likes to write a bad review, even less to read it. With that said..., September 23, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Caveat: No one likes to write a bad review, even less to read it. With that said...

In the course of tediously wading through the book I was shocked by how often and badly the author's example graphics violated the principles described in the text, and not merely "just over the speed limit" violations, we're talking capital offenses. In fairness, his intro and graphical resume (Figs. 1.1 & 4.2) are quite good; I will post examples of good and bad in product photos, but suffice to say that virtually all the infographics contain distractions from the core idea or story point which need to be eliminated. Happy colors are fine and can help communicate, but swirls of randomly colored icons and arrows indicating nothing of import (Fig 3.13) are not "compelling" rather: they indicate the presenter's reach exceeds their grasp and undermine their credibility. One feels sympathy for clients using some of these consultants.

In contrast: the work in Indexed or xkcd: volume 0. They've become worldwide internet phenomena with clear, simple black and white portrayals containing humor and typically: important truths.

The book's goals are admirable, but it's own message was not well executed (or perhaps not well understood).

Authors: please do a full revision. Consultants used for source material: use sensible color schemes, minimize until there's nothing left to remove, and select appropriate visual metaphors - for example: don't portray valuable ideas as lightbulbs being dropped from some height onto a conveyor as in Fig. 6.2, or the awful Fig. 7.1. Use well aligned designs like the excellent Fig. 7.2 metaphor of a game with progress, winning, risk & uncertainty which is brilliant, despite questionable color choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Customizations!, September 23, 2012

The manufacturer has done a terrible disservice to themselves and potential clients by failing to keep their compatibility list up to date!

I just installed this skin on the latest Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C-A03US 15-Inch Ultrabook (Ash Black), and it is fantastic, a perfect fit. Installation requires care, but I went against the prominent warnings and did not RTFM online and chose to merely guess about how to best apply the skin. Manufacturer warnings suggest that lots of customers botch the install, which strikes this user as tragedy - when the customer should be thrilled.

I believe any of the NP900X4B compatible skins should fit the new NP900X4C's, which are amazing machines BTW. I'm thinking of converting my work desktop to a gaming & development box, and working only on the new ultrabook. In truth, my enthusiasm for the computer is probably influencing me, but I stand by this 5 star rating.

I almost look forward to this gorgeous skin wearing out or getting damaged so I can try the 15.4" Taylorhe laptop skin protective decal star trek enterprise! ...but I notice there are tons of great designs available so: highest recommendations on them all, assuming they all have similar quality.
