5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful family saga, June 29, 2011
The Violets of March is a delightful intricate family saga about secrets that join the past with the present.

Emily, the main protagonist, is a best-selling author who is suffering from writer's block after her husband leaves her (for the usual reason) after ten years. Emily escapes from New York City and takes refuge for a while with her eccentric Great Aunt Bee on Bainbridge Island in Washington. While doing research for her new book she comes across an old diary written by a woman named Esther in 1943. Things aren't the way they seem and there are many dark secrets to be found out. The truth behind Esther's tragic disappearance will keep you guessing until the very end. But it's so worth the suspense until then. The mystery slowly unravels as relationships expand, especially that of a former teenage involvement who still lives on the Island and a handsome painter who is a mystery unto himself. There's unexpected romance and as secrets are revealed Emily's world is turned upside down as she discovers her real self. This is a treasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loaded with tension and a sense of foreboding, entertaining, great atmosphere!, June 29, 2011
This review is from: State of Wonder (Hardcover)
Great atmosphere and entertaining, the story moves without pause and is never boring. Loaded with tension and sense of foreboding, there are several places that were truly hard to read. The story surged forward with unpredictable twists and turns and kept me engrossed right up to the last page.

Marina is a research doctor in Minnesota. A teammate, Anders, dies in the jungles of the Amazon. For some reason, her employer and secret lover, Mr. Fox, wants Marina to seek out the truth about Anders' death. Marina rightfully asks, "Why me?" She has no special skills in the area and knows little about the nature of the project in the Amazon. She and Anders were working together on a cholesterol drug.
After getting together with Anders' grieving wife and sons, Marina feels it her duty to make the journey, even though she will once again meet her stern mentor, Dr. Annick Swenson. Swenson knows things about Marina that Marina wants to forget.
Marina Singh's real exploration is her discovery of other people and of herself. This is another excellent Patchett work that will not be able to tear yourself away from.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY RIVETING!!, June 29, 2011
This review is from: Sister: A Novel (Hardcover)
Highly compelling and totally riveting!

Sister is an engrossing, emotional thriller touching on devotion, betrayal, self-absorption, madness, and grief. It keeps you wondering just how unraveled Bee is going to become and wondering what really happened to Tess. The story is cleverly plotted and fast paced. Bee is the responsible sister and Tess is an impulsive free spirit who sees the beauty in the world around her. When Beatrice learns that her beloved sister has disappeared, she rushes home to London. But when the police find young Tess's body, everyone seems ready to accept it as suicide. Everybody, that is, but Beatrice. While bureaucracy stands in her way, she leaves the rules behind and goes in search of the truth. Her search and discoveries blend romance, politics, and science in surprising ways. When everyone is sure that her pursuit of Tess's killer is a delusion, she has to nurture that so-called delusion to unlock the truth. This selective turn of the head gives her a vivid personality. The book is highly compelling and totally riveting. The writing is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER MASTERPIECE!, June 2, 2011
THE GREATER JOURNEY is WONDERFUL! Set in the 1800's, the transformation of Paris and the Americans who lived there and influenced music, art, literature, poetry, science, and acting. This book is an exciting, clever and intriguing glimpse into the more cultural side of American history and the meaningful role Paris life played in shaping our culture. The unequalled cultural delights that was Paris with its spectacular boulevards, and mystifying parks which decades later shaped New York City's Parks, energizes the essence of human spirit. Riveting! McCullough captured the essence of Paris in this unforgettable masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars Food for the soul, March 25, 2011
THE PEACH KEEPER is a sweet story about friendship, loyalty, trust and deep secrets, past and present lives and about "coming home". Food for the soul, Allen's writing soothes and comforts with a touch of believable magic and the supernatural. There is great insight, humor, triumph overcoming insecurities, all to feed the human soul. The wonderful, multi-faceted characters learn to lead with their hearts instead of their minds, and to accept each day as it presents itself. 5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this lovely book., March 25, 2011
I really enjoyed this lovely book. God is unconditional love...in all denominations, all faiths. That's the common thread. Heaven was presented to little Colton in terms he could understand. This story left me with a sense of peace and well-being and confirmed my view of heaven and all of the stories I'm drawn to of near death experience. This is an inspiring, feel-good read for everyone, no matter the denomination they practice. I want a peek into our future destination and stories like this help us to not be afraid of death or feeling the grief of a loved one because we will see them again.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Anxiety For Number Three, March 25, 2011
The Wise Man's Fear is amazing. He is clever, passionate and has a great sense of humor. I enjoyed reading the original characters' development and meeting new ones. It is a great book of three parts. I found myself pausing and re-reading passages or phrases. Patrick Rothfuss's writing is a pleasure to read. His comedy is as perfectly done as his emotional heart-breaking tragedy. The great plotting and timing and somehow turning the improbable into possible kept me fascinated throughout. This is sheer fun and entertainment that will keep your anxiety at a peek until number three is out.

5.0 out of 5 stars After reading PACKING FOR MARS, I had to check out this author's other books!, September 6, 2010
After reading Roach's PACKING FOR MARS, I had to check out other books of hers. I'm so glad I did! She can take a challenging subject and find ways to make you laugh out loud. Her humor is bold, but not disrespectful. She can laugh at the absurdity, yet still appreciate the pain dying brings. She must be a joy to live with!
