3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not compelling, May 15, 2013

The story was hard to follow and changed direction often. If you put it down for very long, it would be hard to remember what had transpired before. The redeeming feature was the excellent descriptive narrative.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worthy, May 15, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The 19th Wife: A Novel (Paperback)
I should have read the real 19th wife as originally written by the 19th wife. This author ruined the real story by trying to write a novel woven around the true story. The modern-day novel was poorly written and hard to follow.

2.0 out of 5 stars weak, May 15, 2013

This review is from: Silver Sparrow (Paperback)
This is obviously a "young adult" novel intended for maybe high school or junior high school age girls. This a weak story about two young girls with the same father and different mothers. The writing is passable but simplistic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow Reading, April 15, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I know it is a novel, but it is so interesting that one cannot just speed through it! I have just started the third book: Balthazar. The writing is so beautifully descriptive. The characters are sometimes hard to place when they appear in the next book as each book is a continuation of the other. One can't put the book down for a week or so (to read a lighter book and/or biography) and expect to pick up and go on without pausing to put people back in order. There is no frailty of mankind that is not discussed in this book.
Worth reading. Makes you wonder how you put up with the shallow works of some other authors!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dumb, March 7, 2013

This book is so boring I couldn't finish more than a few chapters. The author seems to think that if you throw in a lot of trash talk and some sex scenes, it will salvage a story. Well it doesn't work with this author. Is this writer a teenager who failed composition?

4.0 out of 5 stars HAD to finish this book, March 7, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dinner (Hardcover)
Once I started this book I couldn't stop. To what lengths will parents go to protect their children? How would I have reacted if my son and a cousin did such ugly deeds? The way Koch has the parents go on with their dinner while learning what has happened through dinner conversation and phone messages, is quite unbelieveabe and at the same time, believeable!!
Koch is a fantastic writer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, March 7, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was a chore to finish. It was so slow-moving that I kept wondering if there was ever going to be any action or intrique(there wasn't). It was just a story about how people grow up, leave home, learn a trade and continue in the same pattern for ever. There was no drama, no surprise, no excitement. It just moved slowly along.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, January 24, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was a clever book. Characters were defined so well that you thought you would know them if you saw them on the street. It was good reading until the end and the ending spoiled it...........such a gross ending kind of ruined the story. I will read another book by Zouroudi to see if strange endings are a pattern with her.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble, January 24, 2013

This review is from: Abuse of Power (Kindle Edition)
The book may barely be worth the 2.99 I paid to read it. It is slow, labored writing. "High" points are contrived and tedious. I have forced myself to finish this book. It is certainly no page-turner. Characters are so poorly described that you never get a "mind's eye" picture of who is taking part in this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Surprise, December 8, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I stumbled upon this book while looking for a light book to read at night. It was so much better than I expected. It turned out to be quite the juicy little story. Ms Summerscale had certainly done a lot of research about women's place in the mid-eighteen hundreds. The diary was poor Mrs. Robinson's downfall.
